Designer Coal N Terry Vintage has managed to carve out a unique niche in the fashion industry for themselves, combining vintage apparel with one-of-a-kind handmade items which have attracted buyers from all over the globe. Coal N Terry has established itself as stylish and trendy wardrobe which remains accessible and affordable. It’s our pleasure for GlamModelz Magazine to feature a designer whose vision is firmly planted in both the past and future.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did Coal N Terry Vintage get it’s start?

Coal N Terry: It started as an ebay store that collected and sold vintage dresses and accessories. We decided to branch out on our own in the winter of 2010.

GlamModelz Magazine: What items can we usually find in the Coal N Terry lineup?

CoalNTerry: We sell everything from vintage dresses to tops and sweaters, reconstructed vintage T shirts and custom denim shorts.

GlamModelz Magazine: What makes your apparel different from that of your competitors?

Coal N Terry: A lot of our items are one of a kind. The style of the clothing is unique and fun. Usually, when you hear vintage, you automatically think old and boring. Our store is different, we draw inspiration from retro pieces that allows our customers be unique, stylish and fun.

GlamModelz Magazine: What designers inspire you and your work?

Coa lN Terry: Versace and Chanel.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any trends you see in today’s fashion or the fashion industry that you concern?

Coal N Terry: I believe fashion should be individualized, it’s conformity that concerns me.

GlamModelz Magazine: Where do you see Coal N Terry Vintage headed in the future?

Coal N Terry: Someday open a flagship store in Chicago and becoming a source of inspiration for aspiring business owners and designers.

GlamModelz Magazine: Have any celebrities been spotted wearing Coal N Terry?

Coal N Terry: Yes, some international and local celebrities such as Italian Model/professional blogger Chiara Ferragni. And International pop sensation Nenna Yvonne can be seen wearing our items in her music videos.

GlamModelz Magazine: Is there an interesting story behind the brand name?

Coal N Terry: I am a huge soccer fan and Chelsea FC is my favorite team. Our name comes from two defensive layers on the team, Ashley Cole and John Terry. I wanted it to be original so we changed Cole to Coal.

Through conceptual style and presentation; Visual Advantages uncovers and utilizes professional resources available in a community overflowing with talent.

Jett Ray, GlamModelz Magazine’s managing edtior, had the pleasure of talking with a good friend and the Founder of Visual Advantages LLC, Sallie LeBlanc.

GM: Sallie, I am so pleased to give our readers the opportunity to hear you express, in your own words, what Visual Advantages actually is, and offer a background to learn about your services. How was Visual Advantages brought to life?
VA: I never had any intention of starting a business, actually. I started out working as a freelance photo stylist with multiple photographers in the Dallas area – styling models. I felt really lucky to be working with so many unbelievably talented people, especially during a time when the amateur photographer is rampant. Unlike the average consumer, I respect the real talent and the passion of the true professional photographer.

Over time, people started coming to me asking for photographers, or they assumed I was a photographer. It was a common mistake, and I would happily introduce them to the right photographer for their needs, as well as style their shoot myself. Then I realized this could be a real business, thus Visual Advantages was born.

Swingin D Ranch Shoot - Produced by Visual Advantages

GM: Excellent story! Amazing how our talents and gifts for doing certain things can ultimately pave the way for our success. You’ve worked with so many; what genre’s and styles interest you most and work best for your services?
VA: As someone working in a creative profession, you will always fight the need for money vs. the need to express yourself for the sake of expression. Hopefully one will work with the other, but many times they collide. As a new business, I have been focusing on commercial photography – fashion, food, and product. But as people get to know me, as well as my business, I hope that will change, and I will be commissioned to do shoots for the sake of art.As a whole, I think Dallas needs to expand its artistic style and be open to photography as a true form of art. I think we have seen way too much glamour and pin-up. But instead of just complaining about what is happening, I have to be part of the change. I am here to create my own movement and make a name for myself as a real artist in Dallas. While L.A. or NY is great, and we can learn from them, we also need to create our own form of expression.

GM: I agree about the fashion industry in Dallas, and being a former glamour model – I would say that what we know in the U.S. about glamour – is not all that Glamour Modeling really is. Time…and progress will tell what becomes of it. I do hope you and those who share your passion are able to make the effective changes and impact that you desire. It is so needed. With that said, you have obviously seen some great work that has enlightened you about the process and industry. What or who, specifically, inspires you?
VA: I am inspired by history, art, as well as fashion. All of it goes back to humanity and our need for power, love, money, beauty, and God.

GM: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could?
VA: I think any industry where amateurs can pick up an expensive camera and just start shooting away will always fight to be respected. But part of the problem is that the consumer is not educated enough in photography to spot the fakes. It is my job to educate the consumer and help them through this process. I am still learning, but I know I will get better over time.

I also think photographers and stylists need to quit using local designers’ clothings in their portfolio shoots. I am part of the problem, but have since stopped. I will now only style shoots with clothing that has already launched its campaign, is currently in stores, or has come from a thrift store. Local designers need to be commissioning and paying for their own shoots and paying a fair market value.

GM: What equipment is essential for you to capture the quality that you promote?
VA: As a producer, I rely on my photographers to have the best equipment possible for the shoot. But the equipment is not just the camera. It is also the environment, the natural lighting (or lack thereof), as well as the subject. Planning a shoot is very time consuming task, and I thrive on it.As a fashion stylist, having access to amazing clothing is always a huge help! I am always looking for funky shops, amazing thrift stores, and anyone with a great closet. Art and beauty is not just confined to expensive designer stores, though it does help!

GM: Sounds like you really love what you do, Sallie. What is your ultimate GOAL for Visual Advantages?
VA: My goal for Visual Advantages is first and foremost to be a well respected Dallas photography company in the United States. I want people to know my name, as well as know my company’s name. Profits will always be important, but they will always be secondary to respect and integrity. As for where it goes and what it becomes as a business, I am slowly letting this business define and create itself. “I kind of see it like work of art. You have a canvas that is blank, and little by little, you add color, shape, and form. While you can plan all along, it will never look quite like you imagined!” <—- Love that!!

GM:How Fabulous! May I quote you? I guess I just did. Haha. Any other personal or professional goals to share?
VA: To continually expand my portfolio, meet amazing talent, and grow! I also need to continue to travel, not because I do not love my fellow Dallas-ites, but because I need to let other parts of the country see that there is amazing talent here in Texas.

Photography by Fitz Carlile. Makeup artist Dari A. So touching up the makeup of Michaela Rances at Salvage Bar & Lounge. L.A. California.

GM: Absolutely. In Dallas, and abroad…Who are your clients?
VA: My clients are typically e-commerce sites, and I am also slowly gaining publications.

GM: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date…
VA: I just returned from L.A. where I got to work with some great talent for modelwirenetwork.com. The website did not dictate the type of photography, or what we created, so it was pure creative freedom. Bliss!

GM: What advice do you have for Photographers, Models, Stylists and other industry professionals who wish to succeed in commercial photography?
VA: I would say you always should have a goal. I see a lot of photographers who are willing to shoot just about anything, and a lot of stylists who will work with anyone. In order to be respected, you need to set a standard. I am not saying you need to be a snob, but working for the sake of working is fruitless.

Photography by Fitz Carlile, Wardrobe -Sallie LeBlanc w/Visual Advantages, LLC, Model- Stacey Woods, Hair- David Harrington, Makeup- Dari A. So, Jewelry- Jenny Dayco. Location- Salvage Bar & Lounge, L.A, California.

Also, if you are a model who is willing to pose in the nude or in lingerie, you really need to be careful. Not just for safety reasons, but also because the majority of the nude photography is not art, but verging on pornography. Once you go there, it is hard to come back and be taken seriously as a model who can do commercial or fashion work.

Also, treat each other with respect. This is a small industry, and if you treat people badly, word spreads quickly, and you will be pigeon-holed as an amateur, and all you will be left shooting is babies and weddings!

GM: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?
VA: I am producer and stylist who couldn’t care less about what I look like; I am hopelessly happy with myself and who I am as a person. I am more interested in creating the art and fantasy. Sometimes I even forget what I look like until I look in the mirror.

So if you expect to meet some fashionista, sorry to disappoint you!

GM: Trust me, friends…Sallie LeBlanc does not disappoint! Where can our readers view more of your work?
Do you try mixing and matching different outfits before going out with friends at the restaurant or the pub? Or maybe, you’re the kind of person who goes shopping for hours hoping to find the perfect clothes for a special event, but end up returning home hands empty and disappointed! On the other hand, your shape might have changed recently following a pregnancy or an increased appetite during holiday seasons, and in result your closet has become your worst enemy reminding you constantly of those extra kilos.

Relax! That’s not the end of the world. The following tips from a professional wardrobe stylist will help you re-organize your closet in a way that makes it easy for you to find instantly what to wear for any occasion. It is worth mentioning though that you might have never expected to read such tips from a wardrobe stylist; But in reality, wardrobe stylists work today with all kinds of persons starting from the young girl who needs some advices for her prom, to the retired persons who like to take care of themselves and their look.

Tip No. 1: Don’t be a fashion victim!

Fashion is great! It’s a creative art that is a necessity to our daily life. However, we all have different body shapes and styles. If miniskirts are this season’s hit but neither your shape nor your age are suitable for such type of clothes, then there’s no need to rush buy one just for the sake of looking trendy.

Tip No. 2: Think budget

Sure, fashion changes dramatically every year. Nevertheless, you’ll not appear old fashionable if you wear that tight pant that you purchased last year that looked great on you even if this year’s fashion is all about baggy pants and loose shirts. Besides, there are lots of clothes that are considered as basics such as black shirt or skirt. What matters is to feel comfortable and at ease in what you’re wearing. So grab the opportunity and go shopping at end of season’s sales. You’ll surely find some bargains at an incredibly discounted price.

Tip No. 3: Love yourself

There’s no doubt that it’s very important that each and every one of us loves and accepts himself or herself the way they are, because it’s only by loving ourselves that we can love others. And in the context of our topic, it’s very important to love your curves and body shape to be in a positive and cheerful attitude when buying outfits rather than frowning whenever you go shopping desperately looking for clothes that hide your curves and body imperfections.

If you still wonder how to organize your closet despite above advices, then why not seek the services of an experienced wardrobe stylist. You’ll be amazed of the valuable tips and tricks you’ll gain following a dressing session or a shopping excursion with your wardrobe stylist.

Clothes, they say can tell a story; and a fashion photographer ensures that it is told in the best possible manner. Of course, photography is about styles and techniques, but it’s a photographer who manages to weave a story around a dress and ultimately helps to sell it.

That is perhaps the reason why a seemingly simple task of taking pictures of models wearing designer clothes has become a multibillion dollar industry today. It’s not only clothes that these photographers manage to sell; they also sell accessories. Watches, shoes, hand bags, jewelry…the list of things that can be sold is endless. Thus, in essence, it is just another aspect of advertising photography, where the products that are being sold are the clothes and accessories.

When a magazine hits the stands, men and women make a beeline for them to see what the latest trend to hit the streets is. And if the photographer is unable to justify the beauty of the design, the whole effort’s wasted; the designer’s job seems to have gone down the drain, the model seems to be nothing but a lifeless doll and the magazine that displays these clothes loses its followers.

It’s the job of the fashion photographer to bring to life the designers clothes and turn it into an art form. The fact that a photograph helps to sell a product deters many from calling fashion photography an art form. But it isn’t always about the clothes; in fact if it weren’t for photographers, some clothes wouldn’t look as glamorous as they do on cover photos of magazines. Right from setting the right mood, getting the right pose and editing the picture to producing an end result that’s flawless and near perfect; the photographer uses his artistic skills. In fact, there exist photographers like David LaChappelle and Edward Steichen who’ve come up photographs where it’s difficult to discern where fashion ended and where art began; they completely blend as one! But of course, there are some whose work cannot be classified into this category. These are often amateurs who’re easily distinguished by their lack of styling skills. It’s common for their pictures to be characterized by models that aren’t appropriate for the clothes, accessories that do not match the style or clothes that look shabby and wrinkled.

It isn’t always about exotic locales and beautiful clothes; it’s also about the manner in which a photographer uses different elements that result in a perfect picture!

NORTH TEXAS THYROID AWARENESS FOUNDATION INC CELEBRATES ITS INAUGURATION WITH A GALA

Jesse Holley and Dallas fashion designers are showing their support for a new non-profit organization in North Texas.

Jesse Holley, of the Dallas Cowboys, is hosting a gala for the North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation Inc (NTTAF) on September 23, 2011, 6:30pm at the Fairmont Hotel 1717 N. Akard St. Dallas, TX 75201. While supporting this important cause, the gala will also showcase two Dallas based designers’ lines: Shemara Couture and Distinctive Attire.

The gala marks the entrance of the North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation Inc into the non-profit landscape. Along with celebrating the organization’s launch, the ultimate goal of the gala is to bring people together whose lives have been impacted by thyroid disease. While increasing awareness, the evening promises to entertain with a fashion show produced by Jan Strimple Productions.

Future events of the NTTAF will reflect their philosophy of entertaining the eyes while enlightening the mind.

Designer Shemara Jeyarajah of Shemara Couture lives with thyroid disease making her involvement with the gala a natural fit. Her customized fall collection of cocktail and evening wear will be featured in the show, allowing the audience to enjoy her fine use of fabric, joy of color and her eye for exquisite detail.

Henry Coleman, creator of Distinctive Attire, will showcase highlights from his luxury menswear fashion collection specializing in Bespoke-Couture. Distinctive Attire creates refreshingly different menswear with an eye on the prize: to evoke the essence of it’s wearers’ character.

While raising awareness, the organization creates an avenue for people to meet and reach out to others that are dealing with the same or similar disease. NaKisha Ortiz, founder of the North Texas Thyroid Awareness foundation Inc is a survivor of Hashimotos Thyroiditus. With the outreach of the NTTAF, NaKisha hopes to position thyroid testing into the preventative mindset of our annual health screenings.

“Bringing a voice to a silent disease” North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation Inc. P.O. Box 4444 Cedar Hill, TX 75106-4444. The North Texas Thyroid Awareness foundation Inc is a newly birthed 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

written by: Jim Jurica

I recently had the opportunity to work with high-end Italian swimwear designer Masquenada in Miami, photographing the upcoming 2012 line. Their bold, colorful designs can be seen anywhere from the exotic beaches of Dubai to walking the runways right here in the United States. A third-generation swimwear designer, Marco Staderini broke from the parent line to create his own label based on a more youthful, spiritual design approach. Masquenada’s debut at Phoenix Fashion Week in 2010 marked an emergence into the American market. Their swimwear has since made a big splash in the Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit edition, modeled by Chrissy Teigen.

Our whirlwind shoot in two exotic Miami locations incorporated the very elements from which Masquenada draws inspiration: fire, water, wind and earth. Strong patterns and interesting design features like Swarovski crystals are a hallmark of their designs and the product line extends beyond just swimwear.

GlamModelz Magazine: How long has your company been making fine swimwear? Masquenada: Our parent line has been in the swimwear business for 40 years, and the Masquenada brand was created in 2000.

GlamModelz Magazine: How has your new entry into the US market been received? Masquenada: We’ve been fortunate that in the first year in the States, we were picked up by some of the most knowledgeable and prestigious names in the swimwear industry. We have seen great results with all of them.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other projects does Masquenada offer? Masquenada: Aside from bikinis we carry a full line of cover ups, pants, pareos and dresses which match the suits.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you feel separates your products from that of your competition? Masquenada: What sets us apart from the competition are exclusive designs and superb softness of our high quality fabrics. We have an array of options in tops and bottoms to find the perfect fit for evey body type. And of course, the quality of the Italian craftsmanship and gold-plated and swarovski crystals applications.

GlamModelz Magazine: What’s new for the 2012 line? Masquenada: We’ve increased the variety of options in all our proven, winning styles. And feature vibrant designs presented on this year’s collection.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any celebrities seen wearing Masquenada? Masquenada: Most recently, Latin pop singer Belinda was captured by paparazzi in our “Mayan Jewel” suit in South Beach.

GlamModelz Magazine: What does the future hold in store for your company? Masquenada: We are very much looking forward to the future of our brand as it’s recognition and fan base is growing at very fast pace.

GlamModelz Magazine: Where can we find your products being sold? Masquenada: In Florida you can find us at at our Masquenada store in Sunny Isles. And in swimwear shops in Key Biscayne, South Beach, Palm Beach and more. We’re also sold in Beverly Hills and Las Vegas. You can learn more by visiting our website at www.masquenadausa.com or contacting us at info@masquenadausa.com

Oscar Fierro is not only a brilliant designer with a larger-than-life personality, but he is also a humanitarian. He challenges himself to create designs that are elegant, colorful, feminine and unique; and is passionate about giving back using the resources and influence he has earned in entertainment and fashion.

The following video presents the showcase of his latest designs for the Fall/Winter Season 2011 during a well-publicized and attended event, The Celebrity Fashion Experience II, which was held in Dallas, Texas on March 31, 2011.

His amazing, glamorous and spectacular designs…leave me speechless. But the great work he does to improve the lives of others…speaks volumes.

A Model In The Making: Discovering Your Niche

Model:Nikki Rodriguez //Photographer: Barney Lee

When a person dreams of one day “becoming a model”, Fashion Modeling may be the genre that initially comes to mind. Popularized and glamorized by such shows as “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway”, fashion modeling is placed in the forefront of the minds of the general public as the caste representation of what being a model really means.

But as many of us know, there are many different styles and genres, as well as varying bases upon which modeling is “Fashioned”.

Model: Candice Bartholomew /Photographer: Models Choice /Hair: ChaCha Bizarre

Do you have what it takes to be a successful model? Consider with me the following questions,

1. Do you know what genre of modeling is right for you?

2. Do you know how a successful model becomes successful and generates income from her/his work?

If arriving at an answer to either or both of those questions was difficult for you, the series of articles written in this months and next months issues should help you find answers to both of those questions. They will assist you in defining and reaching your goals while discovering your very own personal style.

So for the first question: What genre of modeling is right for you?

I have categorized modeling genres based on two criteria; Modeling Based on a Purpose and Modeling Based on Clothing or a “Look”. Although others may classify genres based on a particular market, I feel there are too many grey areas and exceptions with the generalizations in market representative classification.

Modeling Based on a Purpose

High Fashion models are almost always tall, slender and may begin modeling at a very

Model: Jennifer Fulfer-McCall /Photographer: Dean Fast /Hair & Styling: Lucent /Designers: Meschantes Couture & betsy and iya jewelry /MUA: Ashlee Murr

young age. They may be hired by designers, photographers and others based on how they believe the model will look and model their clothing during a modeling interview called a “Go-See”. The fashion and the design of the garment is the object of focus and the model is often considered an attractive clothes hanger. He/she must have grace and skill in showcasing a garment to be successful in the area of high fashion, runway or otherwise. Female High fashion models are expected to be at least 5’9”, wearing a size 0 to 6, and males are 5’11” to 6’2”. Agency representation is a viable option for models seeking work as a high fashion model, particularly in the fashion hubs of London, Paris, Milan, New York, and Los Angeles.

Casual fashion also has the purpose of showcasing clothing, but the clothing is more casual, everyday wear rather than those you’d find on the runway. Casual fashion models may model for department stores or print ads and circulars, and they are also usually taller than average. Most are over 5’7” and are a size 0 to 8 for females; for males 5’9” to 6’2”. Most casual fashion models find working with a reputable model/talent agency presents the best chance for success.

Glamour Modeling is probably one of the most misunderstood genres in the industry, and is one of the primary focuses in GlamModelz Magazine. So let’s start by looking at the definition of the word, Glamour by Merriam-Webster, to gain some understanding:

Gla-mour – (noun): “an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness.”

Model: JennaLeighe /Photographer: Ethereal Pixels

In that definition, neither the word sexual, nude nor sensual appears but the word “illusory” does. There is a common perception and belief (even by those in the Glamour Modeling industry) that the model and image in a glamour modeling project should convey a more sexy or sensual appeal to the viewer.

Glamour photography often involves the use of airbrushing, advanced makeup techniques, and wardrobe styling to achieve the concept desired or the illusion which is used to excite or catch the attention the viewer. Resulting in an appeal toward the model or a desire to be a part of the illusion that is presented.

In short, the focus and purpose of Glamour Modeling is the creation of an image that highlights the glamour and beauty of a model in his/her surroundings to convey a mood or feeling or produce a positive reaction that appeals to the senses. I believe the use of the resulting glamour images is catalyst for the confusion that may evolve…but that’s another topic entirely.

A glamour model may be seen as a pin-up, in a calendar or advertisement in a mainstream magazine or even in the pages of playboy, MAXIM or other men’s magazines. She/He may be wearing designer clothing, a swimsuit, lingerie, or even semi-nude or fully nude. There is no height requirement, but a proportionate and shapely body is what brings most glamour models greatest degree of success and popularity.

Agency representation is helpful, but most are able to find work through their own marketing efforts and image submission to magazines and others. It is important in this genre to check references of those you will work with and be alert as to the way your images are being used.

Fitness Model: Shaunna Jennings /Photographer: Sam Rambo

Fitness Modeling – As with Glamour modeling, there is generally no height/weight requirement for fitness modeling, however, the model must have achieved a certain level of visible physical fitness. Musculature and lean body mass are essential to the success of a fitness model. (Not to be confused with a “fit model” that is described later in the article)

The purpose of fitness modeling is to promote fitness, well-being and health, to model clothing and other fitness apparel and/or demonstrate special moves that display athletic ability or examples for teaching/training. The successful fitness model can be found in advertisements for magazines, television and local, regional or national promotions for well-known health and fitness products.

Editorial Modeling is another of those confusing or misunderstood genres.

Editorial modeling means that you are modeling for publications/magazines such as major publications like Elle, Mademoiselle, Seventeen, and the on-the-rise digital and web-based magazines.

Editorial Model: Raechel Brown /Photographer: Okie Studios

The purpose of editorial modeling is to illustrate a topic that is being discussed such as music, movies, recreation, finance or vacationing, for instance. The models in this article who are illustrating the various genres of modeling can be considered editorial models for this magazine.

The main employer for the editorial model is the magazine or publisher and his/her success depends on being able to convey the concept the magazine/publisher is looking for.

Promotional Modeling is done at trade shows, conventions, night clubs, fairs and other public events in which the need for a very attractive, height/weight proportionate representative of a company or product is filled. The models demonstrate products, hand out leaflets or brochures, and answer questions.

The pay is good, but the payment schedule varies considerably with an average turn-around time of about 2 to 6 weeks. A model may contract with a promotional modeling agency or browse internet job search sites for seasonal work. Many models who have decided to take their career to the full-time level are promotional models in between the more high-paying gigs, and are doing well.

Modeling Based on Clothing or a Look:

Often, a style of modeling will be defined based on the clothing the model is wearing, (or not wearing) or the look of the actual model, themselves.

The above mentioned Fashion, Editorial and Glamour modeling may be divided into sub-categories based on clothing like Designer Wear, Prêt a Porter, Club Wear, Denim, Lingerie, Footwear, Sportswear, Swimsuit and Nude.

Model: Samantha Nicole/Photographer: Lost for Words

Character and Specialty Modeling is based on the “look” of the model and has a variety of subcategories such as: Parts, Urban, Beauty, Fit Model, Alternative (Fetish, Goth, Latex, Burlesque, Tattooed) Fine Art, Plus-size, Petite, etc.

Character Modeling involves models with an everyday look, such as a schoolteacher, grocery clerk, nurse, truck driver, mechanic, appliance repair person, soccer mom, etc. This concept is interchangeable with the term “Speciality Extra” when there is a casting call for a television or film production. The pay is usually minimum wage, unless you have a higher pay rate because of a contractual agreement with an agency.

Speciality Modeling

Parts Modeling involves concentration on a particular area or “part” of the body. There is rarely any other requirements than that the part being modeled is as close to perfect as possible, and remains that way if he/she wishes to continue modeling.

Urban Glam Model: Allura Nycole /Photographer: Visions East

Urban Models are edgy, yet beautiful and although sometimes called “Ethnic” Models, an urban model is not necessarily a model with a minority background. Urban modeling represents a form of beauty found in cultures that aren’t always celebrated in couture or high-fashion magazines. Often, an urban model finds success in a genre based on purpose (fashion, glamour, fitness) in addition to focusing on a specific look or background.

Beauty Modeling is a style used for advertising makeup and other products that accentuate “beauty” so it is very important to have a beautiful face with a flawless complexion. Beauty Models find work for makeup manufacturers, jewelry designers, and the like. They typically have the greatest amount of success through representation with an agency.

A Fit Model is not the same as a Fitness Model (described earlier), as a Fit model works directly with a designer in most cases, and the garment is made to “fit” that model to showcase their work and there is no element of muscularity required. Some fit models are required to be a particular size usually a size 7 or 10 in clothing and a size 6 shoe, when modeling for department stores.

Alternative Model: Ruca *Photographer: SiVad *MUA: Jenny Torry *Haircut&Styling: Sharin Faith *HairColor: Cody Patterson

An Alternative Model fits a genre in which the models do not represent mainstream ideals of beauty. Alternative models often have a recognizably personalized style like goth, burlesque, latex and fetishism. An alternative model may also be pierced, tattooed or have unique hair-styles and designs.

There are many print magazines with opportunities for the Alternative Model, as well as trade shows, conventions and work with specialty clothing stores.

Fine Art Modeling often, if not always involves nudity. Many fine art models are sought for art classes at universities, private classes, working with photographers, painters, sculptors and others to model for their work of art.

Although there is some compensation for work as a Fine Art, Artist or Figure Model, the fantastic reward in this type of modeling is usually for “arts” sake.

Plus-Sized and Petite Modeling is based on a models clothing size or height, although generally the model must also be very attractive and proportionate in size.

Curvy Model: Jasmin Jewlz/Photographer: Nevada Fantasies

A Plus-sized or Curvy Model must be over the standard clothing size of 0 to 8, (ranging from a size 10 to 16 for print and magazines), but must still meet the height requirements of high fashion and casual fashion.

A petite model should still be a size 0 to 6 but is no taller than 5’4 (ranging from 5’0” to 5’6” for magazines), unless she is Petite/Plus. Of course, these sizes and heights may also vary based on the actual need of the magazine, manufacturer, designer, etc.

Many agencies are adding a Plus-Size category to their repertoire, although petite modeling still has a way to go, as far as recognizable acceptance in the mainstream industry.

So, you want to be a model?

Then, I hope this information has helped you in discovering your purpose and understanding to cultivate and enhance your Look in regards to modeling.

What’s next? Now it’s time to put your purpose and look to good use…and go to work!

Look for “Model In The Making – Part 2: Success!”.. in next month’s issue.

GlamModelz Magazine welcomes LaMirica London to our team of writers as a Style and Entertainment Columnist. LaMirica’s entertaining way of sharing her passion is sure to keep you visiting GlamModelz Magazine each week to see what she has in store.

A Passion for Fashion

by LaMirica London

“Woman is fine for her own satisfaction alone. No man will admire her the more, no woman will like her the better for it. Neatness and fashion are enough for the former, and a something of shabbiness or impropriety will be most endearing to the latter.” - Jane Austen

Fashion, in the broadest use of the term, usually refers to what accords with conventions adopted by polite society or by any culture or subculture. Style is sometimes used interchangeably with fashion, but like mode often stresses adherence to standards of elegance.

When I was younger, I loved to dress up in my mother’s heels, clothing, makeup and jewelry. This was my introduction to the world of fashion. Who knew that years later, I would make my mark in the fashion world as a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper, image consultant and blogger? My aspirations and ambition extend far beyond the continental united; I’m thinking internationally. The launch of my blog www.fashionablyl8.com allows me to not only reach my peers, but I have gained recognition in other countries, many of which I’ve never heard. It’s truly humbling to look at the stats for Fashionablyl8 and see that people in Lisbon, London, and Paris have all visited within the same week.

The world of fashion, for me, involves more than just clothes, accessories and shoes. It involves fashion shows that feature couture designs from some of the greatest fashion houses ever; such as Chanel and Lanvin. It includes photo shoots, movies and music videos, where some of the most exclusive designer pieces are worn; awards ceremonies such as the Oscars and the Emmys always bring out the fabulousness that is Hollywood glamour to the red carpet. So what is Fashion to me? Fashion is the feeling you get when you buy your first pair of Christian Louboutin pumps, or a Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 handbag, or even scoring a pair of vintage Salvatore Ferragamo flats from your favorite thrift store. Fashion is an emotion. It’s the way you feel when you make a special purchase or witness an epic event that you know will never happen again. Fashion… is a passion!

Sofia Nicole’ – A La Mode Denim and Apparel

Uniqueness, Class and Style are important factors in the designing and production of fashion that buyers will choose when they wish to display their own individuality and style. Displaying these intangible characteristics are the goal of Ms. Sofia Nicole London, designer and CEO of A La Mode Denim Apparel.

By challenging assumptions to meet unique needs of the customer, she is breaking out of the concept of former ideas in denim-wear. She has used her creativity to design a variety of fashionable items, from swimwear, to jumpers, to dresses; to give consumers a reason to choose her denim apparel over all others.

Being that she has the foresight to envision designing and making denim apparel in an innovative way, this allows her to produce not what others are doing or copying the status quo, she is raising the bar; so that others may follow her lead…Classic, Stylish, designer jeans and apparel.

“You cannot look in a new direction by looking harder in the same direction.”

– Edward de Bono

FWM Interviews Fashion Designer Ms. Sofia Nicole London.

FWM: Hello Ms. Nicole. It is always a pleasure to meet a designer with a unique vision. We have many questions to ask regarding A La Mode Denim Apparel, but first, please tell me a little about yourself.

SN: My given name is Sophia Nicole London, but in the fashion industry I’m known as Sofia Nicole. I’ve always been a leader, as most entrepreneurs say, and I’ve always had many ideas for business. I loved to draw as a child, but never cultivated the talent or thought anything of it. I actually stumbled into the fashion industry through runway and promotional modeling at the age of 21. At age 23 I started a model management company, Silhouette Model Management, which allowed me to get my feet wet in the industry and create a substantial network for myself. I soon after started A La Mode Denim Apparel.

FWM: Have you always lived in Dallas, Texas?

SN: I’m originally from Oakdale, Louisiana.

FWM: What’s your educational background?

SN: I completed 3 years of college at TWU in Denton, Texas as a Kinesiology major and Dance minor.

FWM: What are your general professional interests?

SN: Fashion Design is not a hobby for me, but a career. My main interest is to protect my ‘brand’ and illustrate this in all that I do. All that associate themselves with me know that I am serious about my ‘brand’ and know me as a professional.

FWM: What does fashion mean to you?

SN: Fashion is everything to me. It is an expression; it is not one set thing or look. In knowing this, I design my collections to have cohesiveness and a wide range that accommodates the consumer and perfects classic and traditional styles.

FWM: How would you define your fashion style?

SN: ‘Sofia Nicole’…My style is me. (lol) I love standing out, setting myself apart from everyone else. Some people call it edge…Edge to me is not only being ‘outside of the box’ but complementing ‘the box’. (lol) I have an eye for edge and a way of complementing the figure of women that desire sex appeal and femininity in their wardrobe.

FWM: When did you realize you wanted to design clothing and what was the first piece of clothing you ever designed?

SN: I realized I wanted to design within the last 3 years and I love my very first design! It’s my version of a bubble dress, from my denim and black lace collection. It’s a sleeveless dress (denim of course), knee length, and worn with a black lace petticoat. It’s vintage with a modern silhouette.

FWM: Explain the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing.

SN: I’ll give you the simple version; there are so many steps and things involved in creating just one garment, let alone a full collection. Inspiration comes first. From the inspiration, I create a theme for the collection. Magic happens! Garment is created. Models are brought in for fittings, alterations are done if needed. The garment is perfected to create the ultimate ‘hanger appeal’.

FWM: Who are some of your favorite designers?

SN: Alexander McQueen; Betsy Johnson; and Jimmy Choo.

FWM: Where can readers buy your clothes?

SN: Designs will hit retail buyers in Spring 2011. Consumers can stay tuned to find out what stores they may find A La Mode Denim Apparel. Until then, they may go to: www.facebook.com\sofianicole.alamodedenim for updates on events, fashion shows, etc.

FWM: How do you select your models?

SN: Castings. High Fashion Model stats.

FWM: What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing?

SN: One that is realistic to the consumers need and allows them to feel exceptional.

FWM: Do you consider yourself an artist?

SN: I wish the word ‘artist’ was taken more seriously in our society. I am big on individuality and how I associate myself and my brand. A La Mode Denim Apparel means all fashions in denim, it allows denim to be seen in a different light, and will revamp your view of denim and how it can be worn.

FWM: What matters to you the most as a fashion designer?

SN: Wear-Ability! And that feeling you get when you try on a garment and you just love how it makes you feel and look!

FWM: What’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?

SN: Performing my MAGIC skill that makes it A La Mode Denim. (lol) Just the small things that make a huge difference and set the design apart: Playing with embellishments, buttons, zippers, pockets, sizes, shapes etc.

FWM: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

SN: Planning is important because there are so many different elements in creating a successful shoot and fashion show; From the models, to the stylists, makeup artists, staff, to the actual concept…Passion for sure!

FWM: What advice would you give for aspiring fashion designers?

SN: Don’t be fearful or let the current ‘trend’ deter you from your individuality and your ‘brand’. Be true to yourself and those who come in contact with you. Professionalism is key.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you’ve imagined.”

FWM: What do you like best about designing clothes?

SN: Seeing the end product. A Dream to Reality. With each design I am reminded with dedication and hard work, a dream will become reality.

FWM: How would you define the style your line exemplifies?

SN: A La Mode Denim Apparel means all fashions in denim; it allows denim to be seen in a different light, and will revamp your view of denim and how it can be worn while perfecting the classic and traditional styles of denim.

FWM: What are some of your fashion goals?

SN: A La Mode Denim Apparel will become an exclusive brand and clothing label around the world. It will have a huge impact and serve as an inspiration to other young designers and models. I wish to give back to fashion students and aspiring fashion industry professionals, as well.

FWM: Where do you get your inspiration?

SN: My inspirations come from a feeling, a TV show, a word spoken, an article read, etc. Inspiration is all around me, I keep my sketch book and notepad handy.

FWM: What are your favorite colors and fabrics to work with and why?

SN: I explore all colors; denim is my ‘blank canvas’. There is so much that can be done with denim that many have yet to see. I have taken on that challenge; we all love denim!

FWM: Where can readers find out more about you and your work?

SN: You may find me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/sofianicole/alamodedenim.

…and my official website launch is coming soon!

Creativity and Feeling at Work

Positive feelings diversify one’s awareness and encourage new, varied, and exploratory thoughts and actions. Over time, this broadened behavioral repertoire builds skills and resources. Christine Haynes’ ability to invoke curiosity about her hand-made jewelry becomes valuable navigational knowledge. Her hand-made crafts are a gateway to pleasant interactions with the public that can cultivate positive relationships and reinforce her aim for excellence.

Through Christine’s jewelry, the capacity to have relationships that provide care and support, create love, fulfill promises, and offer encouragement, both within and outside the family goes from conceptualized, to realized. Her creations invoke the power of positive feelings that create change in how we experience and what we do with “right now”; that we must act on the emotional level to make true changes. And by changing how we feel right now, we change our destiny.

Interview Questions For Ms. Christine Haynes

FWM: How did you create an interest in jewelry and designing?

C.H.: I grew up in a very creative home. My mother was a seamstress and my father was an excellent carpenter. I was literally allowed to draw and write on the walls of my bedroom! I was always working on arts and crafts, and playing in my mother’s jewelry box was a definite joy for me. Though I was always creative and my creativity was supported and nurtured by my parents. It was not until I was in college that I started to design jewelry. When a favorite necklace suddenly broke one day, I decided to try my hand at repairing it. From there the obsession was born! I started designing jewelry first for myself then I decided to sell. But during that time it was only to make extra money for school expenses and I never dreamed it would one day be my profession.

FWM: Your creativity is evident in your designs, where do you get your ideas for designs?

C.H.: My design process is actually very organic. I allow the gemstones to decide what they want to become. Oh that’s sounds so artsy! But it’s true! I never really sit down at my work table and say ok I am going to make this or that! I pull out the materials and gemstones I want to work with and just let the creation come to me, so every design is a surprise even to me!

FWM: What are your favorite pieces of jewelry to make?

C.H.: That’s like asking me to pick which child is my favorite! But I would have to say at this time I really enjoy making necklaces, especially the pieces in “The Bedrock Collection” the new collection is primarily large gemstone nuggets and I just love working with these bold and regal pieces.

FWM: How long have you been a designer?

C.H.: I have been a designer for over 10 years.

FWM: At this present time, what are your future business goals?

C.H.: Ultimately I want to have a private studio where I can sell my jewelry, meet with my clients, and host shows. Currently I am in discussions with a few boutiques that will hopefully carry Fezelry Jewelry. Additionally, I am planning more shows and events to introduce the public to Fezelry Jewelry Designs.

FWM: Tell us more about your personal background like other interests you are involved in?

C.H.: I actually became so obsessed with my love of gemstones that I went back to school. I graduated from the Gemological Institute of America. I am an Accredited Jewelry Professional and I have certifications in jewelry essentials, colored stones and diamonds. I am a freelance writer and have been a frequent contributor to several Jewelry industry publications; including Step by Step Wire Jewelry Magazine, and Beadstyle Magazine. I am also a contributing author featured in two recently released books on Jewelry design; Jewelry in a Flash and Easy Beading Vol. 6 published by Kalmbach Publishing. I am also a wife and mother of two, when I am not with my family, writing or designing jewelry I support a few select nonprofit organizations and, every now and then, I sleep!

FWM: Who are your clients and target audience?

C.H.: My clients vary from celebrities, local news anchors, models, designers, high powered business women, heads of major nonprofit organizations, and the women I like to refer to as my Divas. These are women of style that love unique and beautiful jewelry. My target audience is women of abstract taste that like quality and appreciate unique and original jewelry designs. Most of my clients want to be different and do not shop the mass produced jewelry market.

FWM: How well do your designs fit within the jewelry and designing industry?

C.H.: As well as any other and every day emerging to surpass. My particular market is referred to as the bridge jewelry market. It’s the area between costume and high end. However we have started to emerge and create a much larger following than expected. Some have referred to me as a celebrity jewelry designer or jewelry designer to the celebrities! That is very unusual for bridge jewelry! Fezelry Jewelry Designs is becoming recognized and positioning itself to become a brand design business.

FWM: Do you create pieces that a customer designs or gives ideas about?

C.H.: Yes, that is actually one of the favorite parts of my business! I accept custom order requests and I get quite a few of those.

FWM: Where can we see more of your work?

C.H.: The website www.fezelry.com. where the selection changes often and also at my Blog, www.fezelry.net; I often post my custom projects there. I am very excited because we are working on hosting a public trunk show in the near future.

FWM: Is jewelry designing a hobby that allows you to create one-of-a-kind designs that can be sold at a profit, or given as gifts to friends and family?

C.H.: For me, what began as a hobby ultimately became my passion and subsequently my life’s calling. The process of creating unique jewelry for my clients brings me great joy.

Thank you, Christine. Your jewelry designs are amazing!

GlamModelz Magazine is pleased to welcome Sandra M. Greenup of “Fashions With Marie”, a freelance fashion and wardrobe consultant, and also the newest member of our “Fashion Friendly” writing team. Her Passion for Fashion is best described in her own words….

“Fashion has always been a passion of mine since I was very young. Dressing my barbie doll and paper dolls were such fun to me. To me fashion is about being creative, imaginative and feeling comfortable in what you choose to wear.

I’m a freelance image and style consultant and a woman who believes fashion is simply an expression of identity. I am down-to-earth with a good understanding for shopping and a natural talent for combining both current and vintage fashionable styles. Fashion is an art and a way of seeing my body as a canvas.

My sense of style is evolving into a positive, powerful, masterpiece that mix a variety of pieces of clothing with clothing accessories to create a beautiful look. For me, I realize that fashion is more than designer labels and the popular trends. It is thinking of new ideas for a newest look that simply express who I am.

Also, fashion is about self discovery and presenting myself in a positive way, to the world. I look forward to dressing myself in clothing everyday because I believe it is life changing. I believe that the true key to fashion is to not think about being stylish. Being stylish usually means the person tends to “over style.” The person usually loves the unexpected and enjoys being noticed for his or her new purchases.

I believe that it is best to stay true to my personal style. I do not have to be swayed by something just because it has a particular label attached to it. If I love it, I buy it. I can always change my mind later because I have actually taken the time to get to know my eccentricities.”
