GlamModelz Magazine interviews Makeup and Hair Stylist Jodi Vaughn of Portland, Oregon, Jodi has a unique style that is all her own. Her creativity is very well know across the Pacific Northwest, and is rapidly becoming a nation wide recognizable name in this industry. She has a flare that is truly Vaughn-der-ful!

GlamModelz Magazine: What first got you interested in hair and make-up? Jodi: As a child, my mom was one of the top Mary Kay saleswomen in the country. So, needless to say we had more makeup around the house than one little girl knew what to do with. Often you could find me hiding in the makeup closet coming up with my own versions of five year old glam. And then there was Carolyn, my moms hair dresser. She was amazing, a tall woman with bright red permed hair and a fantastic loud laugh. This was the 80′s , she was at the height of fashion and I thought she was it. She had the best stories of what sounded like the most glamours life ever, it was what I wanted to be.

GlamModelz Magazine: What can models and photographers expect in working with you? Jodi: Well, I am pretty laid back and fun to work with. If you can dream it up I will be more than happy to make it happen. I always have extra hair and accessories on hand to play with. I love to help and never mind pitching in on holding a reflector or light. Actually, if I ever get tired doing makeup I may have a lucrative career as a camera assistant…haha

GlamModelz Magazine: I noticed you do a lot of work with Julian Wilde, can you tell us what that is like? Jodi: Well you walk off the elevator on the top floor of this historic building downtown you are instantly transported to some palace in Paris, crown molding everywhere, gorgeous little things tucked around the room, a grand ballroom with a magical stage and the architecture will drop your mouth wide open. Then you are greeted by Julian Wilde, with a giant “HELLLOOO!!”. He will make you a drink and give you the run down of the days shoot. On the way back to the makeup room I will always stop by the office where Raven Wilde sits behind her giant marble desk always looking beautiful. We will look all her new amazing finds, she has a mind-blowing collection of accessories, shoes and clothing. Her shoe wall alone will make any red blooded woman giddy with excitement, floor to ceiling shelves of the coolest shoes ever made.

Once the model is out of makeup and hair, Raven will dress them and then Julian works his magic with lighting and fantastical sets, all of which he dreams up and builds himself. It is not rare to find Julian on a fifteen foot ladder, painting, or constructing something right before a shoot all in Versace I might add. A shoot with the Wildes can take anywhere from two hours to all day, either way it is always a great time. Watching and listening to Julian work is priceless.

GlamModelz Magazine: What is the most extreme request you have gotten to date? Jodi: Well…I do do a lot of extreme looks, but the one that comes to mind first was painting a model head to toe in white paint, every inch of her had to be white, EVERYTHING!! Lets just say we got real close that day.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advise for aspiring makeup artists?

Jodi: SHOOT with AS many people as possible! Different styles, different levels, different models it all equals a diverse portfolio and each shoot can be a huge learning experience. Practice! Practice! Practice on anyone who will let you, chase them down if you have to. Do not be afraid to play around with makeup. Not everything has to be extreme to make a statement, sometimes a little can make just as much of one. Also, there are so many different makeup manufactures out there, don’t be afraid to check them out, you may find something your kit just can’t live without.

You will not always get paid, especially at first. Doing trade shoots is a great way to meet people and build your portfolio. If you show up with a great attitude and put some effort in what you are doing you will be surprised how fast you can build a good reputation. On the other hand if you are late, “flakey”, gossipy or just uninterested you will also be surprised how fast that reputation can turn into a bad one. Just remember even though you are having fun it is still a job and at the end of the day a polite professional attitude will win out and make everyone’s life a little easier.

GlamModelz Magazine: Where did you receive your training? Jodi: My formal training was done at The International Academy in Florida, where I received my license for hair, skin and nails. Although, I started young making up and cutting hair on my Barbies then friends.

As a huge believer in continuing education, I have attended countless classes learning from the industries top professionals. Continuing education is worth every penny (sometimes it’s even free!) because the knowledge you learn is so helpful in your craft and opens you up to new ideas.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you could dream of any gig in this industry what would it be? Jodi: Funny you ask this because it is actually a question I have thought about a lot lately. The Northwest photographers and clients I have worked with have defiantly kept me busy. They all have such different styles and visions, but I have recently found myself daydreaming of giant editorial shoots in London or Paris. I would not like to move there permanently or anything (I love Portland way too much) but a month or two long “working vacation” would just be dreamy!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us a little about what or who inspires you? Jodi: There are so many sources to draw inspiration from that I find in my friends, photographers, models, designers, random people, magazines, nature, beauty, love, hate, music, but mostly when it comes down to it, it is the raw canvas of the subject I am working on. It may sound a little cheezy but I really do look for the beauty in everyone I work on. There is always something that is beautiful about someone, whether it be lovely eyes or seductive lips, being inspired by it paints the whole picture in my head to translate.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you think of the industry? anything you would like to see changed? Jodi: The industry as a whole has been pretty good to me. There are so many different styles and avenues that models, photographers and Mua’s can go in, to me that keeps it interesting. Working with so many people in the industry I have run into some types that I wish would go away, 95% of people I work with are none of these types and are completely amazing, but there are those few; the gossipers, please stop. It really makes the whole shoot uncomfortable and it makes you look just as bad in the long run. It will be hard for people to trust you or even stand up for you if someone is gossiping about you at some other time. Find something else to talk about, shopping, music, unicorns, whatever..just stop. The complainers, if I have not even touched you yet and you are already complaining about things, it is not a good sign. Have some trust, even if you have not been happy with an MUA in the past. It is just a bad way to start things off, relax and have some faith, you may be surprised! And if it is totally horrible you can always just blame the MUA anyhow. FLAKES! Seriously, this could be my major pet peeve. If you have a legit reason, okay. But your grandma and dog can only die so many times. There is a lot of effort that goes into a shoot and to cancel at the last minute or just vanish all together is just not good. Then to do it over and over, even worse. Like I said at the beginning, almost all of who I work with is none of these, this is just a collective of individuals I have met over an 8 year span of time.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any personal projects you would like to do, or have done? Jodi: Yes! Recently I joined the extremely talented styling team at The National Beauty salon (www.TheNationalBeauty.com). So I am working on building up more salon work and looking into being more on the educator side of things.

Also one of the National Beauty owners Heidi and I have started our own line of accessories and feather hair extensions. It is called “Feathers and Leathers” and we are on facebook, of course! Look for us in stores around Portland and hopefully further out in the near future.

GlamModelz Magazine: Ok don’t lie, you work with one of our contributing photographers, Sam Rambo is sort of cool huh?I mean with a name like Rambo, haha Jodi: SAM?! He is actually super awesome!! Better than cool! Shooting with him is like hanging out with a really good friend. He is super laid back and open to any ideas. He has the coolest gadgets that he has made or acquired and now that he has his trusty IPAD I am pretty sure he is unstoppable. Do be ready to go to some crazy locations if you shoot outdoors with him. The last time we shot I followed him in his little red Spider sports car in my VW Bug up a dirt gravel road with 2 models in the car and dust kicking up everywhere. When we made it to the the top it was all worth it, beautiful rolling hills and those big electric generating windmills, it was all very surreal and totally worth the car wash later. You always end up with fantastic images, and some fun stories. Plus he always shoots really cool models which always makes the day go by so nice and smooth!

GlamModelz Magazine: What is the hardest thing you have had to do? Jodi: Wow, good question. Thinking back, it would probably have to be just starting out as a makeup artist. Trying to be confident but so nervous on the inside. I would always take it so hard if someone didn’t like it or a model would come out of the bathroom with completely different makeup after I did it. Always worrying if you were going to get more jobs, how much to charge ect.. It was hard in the beginning, but I learned that you just can not skip over the experience part. You have to mess up and just learn from it. Thankfully it does not happen anymore, but I am prepared if it does!

GlamModelz Magazine: I have heard a rumor that you are also in a rock band? What is that like? Jodi: I am!! It is one of my other passions in life. I started playing music at a young age and continued it to college. Now I am a bass player in an all female band called Little Volcano. It has been such an amazing experience being around so many talented women. They inspire me to be even more creative and take more chances in life. Watch out for us, we are in the middle of writing, recording and making a music video. Total shameless band plug, but you can check out our EP Precious Beast at littlevolcano.bandcamp.com .

GlamModelz Magazine: What is the best way to contact you?

Jodi: Well, recently I acquired an assistant to help me with booking and organizing. Through Tanya’s natural talent, superior work ethic and obvious creativity, Dyer Straights Design Team has quickly established a reputation for high quality work and an unmatched classic style.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell me a little about yourself. Tanya: First of all I am a wife and mother to 3 wonderful children. I have worked at Mitchell’s Salon for 18 years where I’ve made the best friends and mentors anyone could have. I have been doing hair for photo shoots a little over a year now, and it helps my creativity in the salon and in life.

GlamModelz Magazine: What sparked your interest in cosmetology? Tanya: I used to do all my friends hair and I love retro movies, hair and makeup. Off I went to beauty school, but my mentors at Mitchell’s Salon really taught me how to do hair. Christine Gilbert, Cy Tankersly and Vivian Moore made me the hairdresser I am today.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get started working with models and photographers? Tanya: I used to take photos of our kids, nephews and nieces all the time. We would dress them up and do their hair. So, when my husband, Steve Maisch, wanted to change from independent films to photography, I thought it would be a fun hobby for us both.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell me about the Dyer Straights Design Team. Tanya: I wanted to share the fun I have found with doing hair for print work with my coworkers. We wanted to try new things we just couldn’t do in a salon atmosphere. My friend Shelley Cook and I were talking about organizing a team for fun, in case we needed to do a large shoot. We are just now starting to nail down people with the passion to do it. We have people from Mitchell’s Salon as well as three independent stylists and a girl in beauty school, Elizabeth Lane. My intention is to have a 20 person team at some point. Then they can choose photo shoots that appeal to them and we can be more diverse. As for the name, it was my creation. I had asked people to think of a name, but they all liked my choice and it stuck.

GlamModelz Magazine: What can models and photographers expect in working with you and the team? Tanya: I have plenty of ideas and I prefer to be in a creative fun atmosphere with people who like to inspire themselves as well as others. My husband, photographer Steve Maisch, can tell you I am one of his biggest fans and also his biggest critic. I expect a lot from him because I know this is what he is meant to do. Besides being a great husband and father, he is also a tremendous supporter of the design team. If I say I want to make a girl look like a ram, he encourages it, and for that, I am truly grateful.

GlamModelz Magazine: What has been your favorite design/photo shoot so far? Tanya: My favorite photo shoot was with model Heather Symmes. I literally made an outfit out of strips of white material and threw her hair up in 20 minutes total. It may not be the best hair I have ever done, but that was definitely the most I have laughed on a photo shoot. The most difficult was the first photo shoot for the Dyer Straights Design Team. Getting anything started for the first time is challenging, but well worth the stress.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are the craziest materials you have used for a design? Tanya: I guess that would be a tie between dreadlocks I made with newspaper and the bendy straws and burnt wood I made for a shoot where the model rose from the ashes. I love those concept shoots!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your current projects? Tanya: I am currently working on seven deadly sins, 30′s lounge singer, and a mummy shoot just to name a few. We have many, many more in the works. It is so exciting!

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you hope for in the future of the design team? Tanya: We are hoping our next shoot will be in glamour with beautiful, shiny hair and gorgeous models on killer backgrounds. Hopefully we will be working with another clothing designer also.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your personal goals? Tanya: I am currently looking to collaborate with a few more clothing designers and create some art. Anyone can take a picture but when everything is right, I feel its art.

GlamModelz Magazine: How can you be contacted? Tanya: My email is Tanya.Maisch@gmail.com, or you can post to the Dyer Straights Design Team on Facebook.
I recently had the opportunity to shoot with the beautiful and astonishing Bailey. She is an accomplished model who works professional as a Makeup Artist full time so it’s always nice to get her in front of the camera for a change

I have learned a lot of tricks shooting with her over the past two years. Number one is patience and the second is skill. If you do not have the skill you should consult a highly creative and competent professional to ensure your successful photoshoot.

A professional Makeup Artist is worth twice every penny you spend and can really make the difference you need for the edge in today’s competitive world of modeling.

Beauty Photography, is an area where I excel. It’s an exciting concept, far more time consuming and far more complex than one would imagine. This is where the collective creativity really comes together and I love the interaction with other creative professionals. This type of work is so highly specialized and very beneficial to Makeup Artist’s and Hair Stylist’s portfolios – as well as the models and photographers. I spend a great deal of time each year shooting with a few super creative Makeup Artist’s and Hair Stylist’s on their own portfolio development and maintenance projects. I’m always excited to be involved with these projects. Their needs are so very simple, Fine Detail! I’m surprised to hear all of the time; “I can’t find anyone to give me the fine detail I really need.” I always use highly specialized lighting equipment, specifically designed for the finer detail needed in Beauty and Makeup photography – The Beauty Dish.

I use the Beauty Dish as my main light on every shoot these days regardless of Makeup work, High Fashion, Glamour, etc. There is just something about the way in which it illuminates the skin and makeup pigments that can not be beat. When a Makeup Artist is working on her own book she is usually going for something very unique and highly artistic. Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist’s will put a great deal of time and money into a single shot, because of this they always plan very carefully! It’s not uncommon to discuss a shot for a month or more before shooting. The majority of Beauty shots I have been involved with have required two hours to six hours of preparation time. It then takes 15 or 20 minutes to shoot the model. I test with new models because of the Continuous search for Gorgeous Models with unique, perfectly symmetrical facial and beauty features.

While selecting Beauty Shot models for a Makeup Artists projects; we look for great complexion and skin, perfectly symmetrical facial features, lush full lips, stunning eyes, a strong cheek bone structure, such as those of European or Russian ancestry. New models need to understand that a Makeup Artist usually puts a great deal of time and money into one image for her portfolio. A single shot can cost the Makeup Artist well over $1,200.00 in products and time, so the MUA will be very picky in Model selection. I test shoot for Beauty Shot candidates all the time. Models I test shoot with must be able to do your own makeup, flawlessly. If you can not do your own makeup, the chances are that it is because of a condition that would make the model unsuitable for a Makeup Artists project, such as oily skin which causes the pigments to bead or dry skin which will absorb the pigments before we are ready to shoot.

Tip for Models: Be completely honest with your Makeup Artist and communicate! This is essential to a successful shoot! Hire the best MUA you can afford, this is not an area to cut costs. Even if you have skin conditions, a good MUA will have alternatives to accentuate your beauty features. While testing for Beauty Model candidates, I have occasionally run it models with allergies and/or sensitivities to various products, its so important to let your MUA know this in advance of the shoot, so that the MUA will have the products on hand needed for the project. Select a photographer who specializes in makeup and beauty work. There is nothing worse then being handed a pile of B&W’s after spending $400.00 for a rocking MUA/Stylist. In the Modeling Industry, you get what you pay for.

So now we need to face the facts, less the one percent of all the models and wannabe models are actually perfect for a Makeup Artists own Beauty projects. But do not despair. You can always hire a professional Makeup Artists. to assist with your special beauty project. In the San Francisco Bay Area, be prepared to pay a minimum of $125.00 a look or more depending on the complexity and supplies needed for the “Look”. The Makeup Artist will usually offer a deal on second and third looks, not as edgy and during the same session. Professional Makeup Artist are so good at contouring the face to enhance your beauty features. I have been totally amazed more then once to watch a MUA change the shape of a models face just by shading jaws and cheek lines. They are worth every penny and a very valuable team member to ensure a successful shoot.

It’s possible to do your own Edgy Makeup, if your creative. It’s usually not that difficult, but the concept and planing can be. Edgy works well when it’s simple and clean, regardless how complex it looks when finished. This is a Barbie look Mary really wanted to try, I believe we used three pair of eyelashes and a lot of Pink.It took Mary about 20 minutes to do this look herself and we are both so happy with this..

Tiera and I had this concept once, I’m so happy with her work here. She required about 15 minutes to get ready, which was about the same amount of time it took me to cut the mask out of a piece of lace. We only took 9 shots for this look and we both decided we loved it and wrapped it up for the night.I just love shooting with Tiera, she is so creative and excels with sizzling facial expressions and poses. I would shoot with her every day if I could!!

We shot Autumn first with the beautiful Sandra. I shot Spring with Cheri’ Clark (who did her own makeup in the shot above) Christalbell wanted so badly to be involved and so graciously agreed to model (doing her own makeup & hair) This has turned into an obsession for me to complete.
For our premiere issue, GlamModelz Magazine interviewed, Vintage Hairstyling Specialist – Miss Lynne D.Bomb, Owner and Master Stylist of Vintage Flair. Through Lynne’s natural talent, superior work ethic and obvious creativity, Vintage Flair has quickly established a reputation for high quality work and an unmatched classic style.

Read on to learn more …

Beauty Editor – Jett Ray (JR): How and when did you get started as a hairstylist?

Miss Lynne D. Bomb of Vintage Flair (VF): Growing up I was always exposed to the world of theatre, old movies and art, this is all thanks to my Grandma Betty and my Mom, Meg. Whether it was seeing a live musical or listening to records, I always had a fondness for the 20’s through the 50’s.

I’d been active in theatre, music and dance since I was young, but it wasn’t until I was 11 or 12 when I was cast in a show set during WWII that I really started to delve deep into that era. At that time we were living outside of Los Angeles when the Neo-Swing music, dancing and style became popular.

We’d go to Disneyland once and awhile to take swing lessons, my Grandma Betty gave me many articles in newspapers and magazines from the area on this huge craze. I watched music videos, rented how-to tapes and practiced these steps with my little sister, Lauren. I fancied the idea of doing my hair and make-up just like the jitterbug gals in Los Angeles, but I really was too young.

Fast forward to my sophomore year in high school when we’d moved back to Fort Worth and I became best friends with a gal, Shaylynn, who went to “Swing Castle” on the Southside of Fort Worth. I immediately became immersed in the style of these dancers! I started practicing 40’s styles on myself with a small collection of vintage hats my Mom had bought me. I changed my wardrobe completely to skirts and flats or heels and added ribbons, bows and flowers to my hair any chance I got!

After I graduated, I went to school in Houston and Dallas for Musical Theatre and Costume Design. I had been away from the Fort Worth swing scene, but still incorporated the 30’s, 40’s and early 50’s style into my everyday look. When I returned to dancing in Fort Worth I was slowly asked to style hair for this Big Band dance or that Hangar dance and it worked it’s way into weddings, proms, banquets and eventually photo shoots.

Cosmetology school doesn’t teach you what I’ve learned in seven years that I’ve been doing vintage styling. I’ve worked very hard at learning these period correct styles, and theatre has gone hand-in-hand with that, most certainly.

JR: What or Who inspires you and your work and Why?:

VF: Old Hollywood musicals were a big part in my love for that era! As well as Gwen Stefani, and the style she displayed on the cover of No Doubt’s album Tragic Kingdom. I got that record when I was 10 years old and wanted to be just like her! The blonde hair like Jean Harlow, the 40’s style rolls, and the red lipstick! Unfortunately, my Mom wasn’t into letting her 10 year old bleach her hair….and I am now thankful for that!

My Grandma Betty and Grandmother Virginia are a huge inspiration, we have old family photos displayed in our home and I am always in awe how they both just look so glamorous and strikingly gorgeous in anything. I truly wish women did look like that still, but then again, it’s nice to go out in a dress and heels with your hair and make-up done and get that kind of reaction out of people.

Lastly, my fiancé, I never thought I’d be able to find a guy who loved vintage style as much as I do. He’s a constant inspiration, my biggest cheerleader and is responsible for all of my advertising design!

JR: Do you have any career advice for those new to the Glamour/Beauty modeling industry?

VF: My belief is that hard work and humility pay off. It says something about a person who does not take the time to learn their craft, for someone who rushes into it and expects everyone to go crazy over their work. I don’t want to be one of those “Jack of all trades, King of none.” I have huge goals for myself, but am taking my time with it all. It’s a continual learning process for me. I try to stay positive no matter what the obstacle is and remind myself that there is always something to learn in every situation. It never hurts to ask questions! It is also imperative to know who you are and what you want from life. Stand up for yourself no matter what. Let the negative ones go on with their lives, they’ll waste a lot of time thinking about you and how you were able to go above and beyond of what’s expected.

JR: What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

VF: There were two in the past six months or so that I am still amazed by. The first, being my work on the cover of Parker County Magazine. The second, the wonderful response I got when we decided to have a booth at the Lonestar Rod & Kustom Round Up. A huge car show with vendors, music and folks all across the nation, and even some from across the globe! We were not expecting to fill up my appointments so quickly, but two days and fifteen heads of hair later, we came away with a new outlook. The most exciting part was having my booth next to Donnie Hawley’s, the owner of Hawleywood’s Barber Shop in California. Hawleywood’s specializes in men’s vintage cuts and shaves in the correct and traditional way. He not only has two locations, but a product line as well! I use his pomade on a majority of my clients and am a huge fan of his hard work and ambition. He is the male version of what I hope to become, so it was an enormous honor for our booth to even be near his!

JR: What are your future goals?

VF: As far as my short term goals, I’m taking a breather on shoots as our wedding is just around the corner! But, speaking of Hawleywood’s, I am now going to sell his product line to my ladies and as well as the fellas in the area too.

My long term goals are to own a beauty parlor specializing in quality vintage looks for women, and instructing them on doing their own pin-curl sets and styles. We’d like to live in Los Angeles for a bit, and I would eventually like to get into pin-up photography myself, but I want have a lot more knowledge of the technical side of photography before I jump headfirst into it! In the mean time I have great connections to some really talented folks here in DFW, so I will bide my time and work really hard!

JR: What is your favorite style of Modeling/Photography to work with?

VF: My favorite is the very traditional style of pin-up and cheesecake art and photography. I’m a collector of original prints of pin-up artists like Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, and Enoch Bolles; although my ultimate favorites are ones from female pin-up artists of that time such as Joyce Ballantyne, Ruth Deckard, Olivia De Berardinis and Zoë Mozert.

Today it is so over to top or poorly done that it makes me embarrassed to be associated with the genre. Although, the realization to it is that those forms will fade away and that the classy work of the early days will prevail.

JR: Do you like to travel for work? Where have you traveled to for your career?

VF: I enjoy traveling, quite a bit. I stay local for the most part, besides Austin, but we plan on traveling in the next couple years or so.

JR: Are there any upcoming events on your calendar?

VF: There are plans for a few car shows before the year is over, so just stay tuned to my calendar on www.myspace.com/vintageflair!
