Designer Coal N Terry Vintage has managed to carve out a unique niche in the fashion industry for themselves, combining vintage apparel with one-of-a-kind handmade items which have attracted buyers from all over the globe.  Coal N Terry has established itself as stylish and trendy wardrobe which remains accessible and affordable.   It’s our pleasure for GlamModelz Magazine to feature a designer whose vision is firmly planted in both the past and future.

GlamModelz Magazine:  How did Coal N Terry Vintage get it’s start?

Coal N Terry:  It started as an ebay store that collected and sold vintage dresses and accessories. We decided to branch out on our own in the winter of 2010.

GlamModelz Magazine:  What makes your apparel different from that of your competitors?

Coal N Terry:  A lot of our items are one of a kind. The style of the clothing is unique and fun. Usually, when you hear vintage, you automatically think old and boring. Our store is different, we draw inspiration from retro pieces that allows our customers be unique, stylish and fun.

GlamModelz Magazine:  What designers inspire you and your work?

Coa lN Terry:  Versace and Chanel.

GlamModelz Magazine:  Any trends you see in today’s fashion or the fashion industry that you concern?

Coal N Terry:  I believe fashion should be individualized, it’s conformity that concerns me.

GlamModelz Magazine:  Where do you see Coal N Terry Vintage headed in the future?

Coal N Terry:  Someday open a flagship store in Chicago and becoming a source of inspiration for aspiring business owners and designers.

GlamModelz Magazine:  Have any celebrities been spotted wearing Coal N Terry?

Coal N Terry:  Yes, some international and local celebrities such as Italian Model/professional blogger Chiara Ferragni.  And International pop sensation Nenna Yvonne can be seen wearing our items in her music videos.

GlamModelz Magazine:  Is there an interesting story behind the brand name?

Coal N Terry:  I am a huge soccer fan and Chelsea FC is my favorite team. Our name comes from two defensive layers on the team, Ashley Cole and John Terry. I wanted it to be original so we changed Cole to Coal.

GlamModelz Magazine is pleased to introduce our GlamPro guest artist of the month Victoria Meadows, of Oni Studios, from Oak Harbor, Washington.
Victoria: 

When we first started out I don’t think we thought we were going to get so serious about the craft. In fact, we viewed it as more of a hobby rather than something that we’d pursue professionally. My first photography experience was holding a reflector while Travis shot models we found on model mayhem. Gradually I started taking a more active role in it until I had completely taken over. I had fell in love with the art and attended a few schools to better my skills. Since then we have flourished in our community, and have gotten clients from as far away as Canada. We don’t know what the future holds but our goal is to move more into publishing our work in magazines, and we are starting to shoot specifically for that industry.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you feel about being a female in a male dominated industry, what challenges do you face? Any resentment? Any other words of wisdom for female photographers?  Victoria: Photography has been a male profession for a long time, however, slowly, but surely women are taking over. Some of my customers are surprised when they learn that I am a woman, but most others are relieved. I find that being a female boudoir photographer is actually easier. Many of the girls I shoot say that they would not feel this comfortable with a male photographer. So no, there is no resentment at all, but I do find that I have to work a bit harder to be taken seriously.

GlamModelz Magazine: Your work style and concepts are cutting edge from sexy glamour, to art.  What inspires you and how do these projects develop? Victoria: I can get inspired just driving down the street and seeing an abandoned building or a run-down barn, but most of my inspiration I draw from other artists. Luis Royo, Dorian Cleavenger and Michael Mobius are truly amazing and are an endless source of crazy ideas. Gayla from 666Photography is an innovator and someone I look up to. I love looking through other photographers work and try to figure out their lighting setup. People like George Hurrell and Bunny Yeager are masters of light on level I am yet to achieve.

GlamModelz Magazine: Our readers really want to know what your favored editing programs are and any tips or tricks you care to share with us? Victoria: Up until recently my husband, Travis, did most of  the editing. We use Photoshop CS4 and he is very good at taking images I produced, listening to my vision and manipulating it to tell the story I had in mind. Plug-ins like Mama Shan’s have made our editing process so much easier and faster.  Since I started doing photography full time I now do my own post production. It’s definitely a lot of fun, but I have to be careful not to rely on it fully and do as much in camera as I possibly can.

GlamModelz Magazine When selecting Models, Makeup Artists and Hair Stylist for any given project, what qualities do you look for and what process do you go through? Victoria: I select my Makeup Artist same way I select my Models. After viewing their portfolio I invite them for a short shoot and want to see them in action. That is how I met our makeup artist Ashley, from Make Up Your Mind. She had the talent and creativity, motivation and excitement about the project, and style that matched my vision.

Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Victoria: We never planned to have a photo studio. Yes, we liked taking pictures, but never thought much of it. That is until we got stationed in Whidbey Island, Washington. There is not much more to do here besides camping and hiking, and I am a city kinda gal!
My husband’s first job in the Navy had been a photographer and he suggested we try out photography as a hobby. We started out by inviting friends over to the house to practice different lighting techniques and posing. When I look at those photos today I cringe, but back then we thought they were great!

I’ve also taken photography classes from New York Institute of Photography and Penn Foster, and try to go to as many seminars as I possibly can. Recently I attended The Pin-Up-Alooza with Mike Long and Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it Live with Scott Kelby. Both taught me a lot and were so much fun!

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour and Art?  What other genre’s and styles interest you?  Victoria: The world of glamour and seduction always interested me. To me it’s easy to bring out the sexy side out of a woman, and I am proud to be able to give that confidence to the clients that walk through my door. I feel that Glamour and Art closely relate to Fantasy, Gothic/Industrial and Horror genre’s and I like to mix them into one.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Victoria: I’m a loyal Nikon shooter and my D700 is always within reach.  The lens that I use the most and find to be the most versatile is the 70-200mm f/2.8. It gives me freedom to move away from the subject for a full frame shots and still be able to zoom in enough for close ups. My in studio light set up is Alien Bees by Paul. C. Buff that I absolutely love.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Victoria: I don’t mind doing TFCD shoots at all with right models and for my personal projects. But at the same time I don’t believe that modeling and getting a CD is where the relationship should end. I am a true believer in mutual promotion. I always promote the model I have worked with and give her credit and expect the same from them.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style?   Victoria: Deviantly sexy. I like to push limits, even with customers to a certain extend.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography?  Other goals?   Victoria: One of the goals this year is to expand the studio and submit my work for publication. That is why it is so exciting for me to be published in a GlamModelz Magazine. I am both humbled and honored to be able to share my passion with such a wide audience. Some of my long term goals are to become one of the most sought after boudoir photographers in the area.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?  Victoria: In a model I don’t always look for the prettiest face. Attitude and confidence is what I value the most. The sexiest thing for a woman is her self esteem and being true to who she is. Not being held back by what society deems right or wrong… think for yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new, female photographers who want to shoot glamour and art?  Victoria:  Love what you do, but don’t forget to try new things. Learn from other photographers and don’t be afraid to make mistakes or break the rules. Sometime the winning shot just happens. But most of all trust your instincts.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business Hannah, and what goals have your set for your self? Elle Mae: I got started back in high school with a talent agency; I made great money doing commercials that aired nation-wide, public campaigns for Washington and Idaho, and being featured in web episodes both as an extra and as featured character. What started out as a photo shoot to gain new headshots for my agency I stumbled upon commercial modeling. With a little extra encouragement, advice, and confidence I got my foot into the door of modeling. I starting out with swim wear and fashion and later experimented with glamour and more recently implied nude. My goals have always been to challenge myself, I like to think outside the box and create images that aren’t always the same. My background as an actress has helped me immensely with facial expressions and posing; as modeling is quite similar to acting.
GlamModelz Magazine: Posing 101, any suggestions to newer models coming into the business? Elle Mae: PRACTICE! As silly as it seems practice in front of the mirror, study other images and models as well. Learn what flatters your body style, what angles work and don’t work, know how to change subtle things; your eyes, your smile, or your feet. Always throw a curve somewhere, if you can make more than one curve the better. Know your audience for the pose you’re intending to create; this will determine if you should do shots straight on or at an angle. If men are your audience straight on shots seems to indulge that, if woman are your audience for maybe a more high fashion shot put your body at an angle. Simply put sometimes the most awkward feeling pose, looks the best on camera!

GlamModelz Magazine: What has been your greatest success to date?  Elle Mae: Last winter when Sam Rambo and I won Holiday Hotties for a fun holiday concept we had shot, to see Maxim.com pasted on your photo was a great feeling. Recently Sam Rambo and I also won Pic Of The Day on ModelMayhem.com-another great moment. Sam and I sure can create some awesome photos.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts and issues with implied and nude posing? Elle Mae: If you would have asked me this question years ago when I first started I wouldn’t have had anything positive or inspiring to say, however as my modeling has progressed I have learned to love the female body. If an implied shot is done right and tasteful it can be the most amazing shot in an entire portfolio. If you’ve got it-flaunt it! Good lighting and a great photographer would help also thoughJ As a model you learn to love angles and curves and the female body is a canvas full of those, so why not highlight them?

GlamModelz Magazine: What gets you motivated everyday to stay in shape and look your best at all times? Elle Mae: Staying in shape has always been a personal choice for me and besides I spent nearly five years obtaining a degree from a university in just that; bachelors of science in community health. Eating healthy and working out is not something I have ever had to convince myself to do. As a mother though and working two jobs finding the time to do so is very limited. I have what I call “mommy’s home gym” at home and spend a lot of time doing body resistance exercises from home and am able to get cardio in at the gym at one of my employers. Looking your best comes from confidence more than anything, if you carry yourself that way you need not find motivation to look good.

GlamModelz Magazine: What excited you the most when you first started modeling? Elle Mae: Just experimenting!! Trying new things, seeing what you like and what you don’t. It is always exciting for you’re not always creating the same images. The excitement never dies.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions are a big part of a photo session, how and where did you learn this?? Elle Mae: I would say my prior experience in a talent agency for acting helps a great deal with this. When I’d audition for parts the casting director would ask me to read a script, then they’d ask me to change my facial expressions, voice, accent, demeanor each time I read it. This is always what you’re doing when you’re modeling; creating a new character in each pose or outfit.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you feel that flexibility and diversity are important to a model’s portfolio? Elle Mae: YES! You have to be willing to take a risk, what do you have to lose? You may create a bad image and you’ll learn from it or you may create a killer photo that people talk about for years to come. You have to be willing to be flexible and always show diversity in your portfolio-challenge yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle imperfections? How important do you feel professional make up is to a model? Elle Mae: Imperfections? Do those really exist? No one person is the same and our differences make us all unique. I’ve used professional make up in both modeling shoots and always on film for acting, it’s simply an enhancement on film/camera that brings out your facial features, nothing is wrong with it. However, I don’t think us as models should feel like make up covers up our “imperfections”, use make up as an enhancement not a cover up.

GlamModelz Magazine: When reviewing photographer’s online portfolio, what really grabs your attention? What type of images gets you in the mood to shoot with them and what separates the great photographers in your mind?  Elle Mae: When I am looking through a photographer’s portfolio I look at lighting, concept, finishing touches, variety and detail. You want a photographer that has a wide range of photos, someone that pays attention to little details, has an eye for creative concepts, and a finishing touch to give it that final flawless look is a plus. Great photographers for me are separated by their personality, I most enjoy working with someone that can lighten the mood, laugh, joke, and be professional all at the same time. Sound hard? It’s not-and it truly creates the best environment. A photographer that goes the extra mile to make sure you are both happy with the images is important also.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Josh: I really enjoy photographing Cityscapes at night, getting the flares and colors of streetlights and buildings make such great images and really make great wall art. The fact that you can make some one look so beautiful as well as make them feel good about them self is the best feeling which builds my love for why I mostly photograph Glamour/beauty.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Josh: I am inspired by all photographers who have been able to make a good living in the industry. I get inspired by other photographers work all the time. The thing that keeps me going is the satisfaction of my clients

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Josh: The biggest challenge in the industry is getting your name out there. Networking with others is key. I would not change a thing about how I see the industry.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Josh: I always need my beauty dish and or soft boxes with me at every glamour shoot, and whats a glamour shoot without a fan blowing!

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Josh: Paid is the way to go, I feel that photographers deserve to get paid for the hard work we put out to make someone look good. In the end it is our image that is getting models signed to agencies and money in there pocket. Yet Im not totally against TF work because if I didn’t have models help me out in the beginning I would not be where I am today with my portfolio. If a model comes to a photographer to shoot, the model should pay, same if a photographer asks a model to shoot, that model should get some form of payment.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Josh: My parents have always been an inspiration to me in everything I do. I am also inspired by other photographers work as well.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Josh: My goal is to one day have an actual store front. I want to be able to have a one stop shop where people can get amazing photography and top of the line music recording done. I want to monopolize the entertainment market.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Josh: The one thing I look for in every person I network with is an outgoing personality and an understanding of how important we are to each others future in the industry. I work with anyone, if your new or tenured I respect what you do and will give you a chance to shine with me as long as you have an artistic eye or passion for what you do.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Josh: The biggest thing is learn your posing and lighting, without those skills you really cannot make it far. The more practice you can get with photographing friends and family the better. I taught my self everything I know. Never give up!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Josh: The best feeling is when you are out in public and someone you do not know sees you and asks for your autograph or praises you on work they have seen from you. That keeps me going!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Josh: Make sure you have the wardrobe for it and select the right photographer for the style you want to portray in your portfolio. I always recommend setting up a pre shoot meeting with your photographer to talk over ideas and look at a portfolio of their work. Also bring in images from magazines you like so the photographer has a style idea first hand. Photographers are visual people so sometimes we need to see what your looking for.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Josh: I love music! I have a full recording studio set up that local artist can come and record there mix tapes in.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Josh: I am a self taught photographer, I have had no school training in photography.

Jett Ray, GlamModelz Magazine’s managing edtior, had the pleasure of talking with a good friend and the Founder of Visual Advantages LLC, Sallie LeBlanc.

GM: Sallie, I am so pleased to give our readers the opportunity to hear you express, in your own words, what Visual Advantages actually is, and offer a background to learn about your services. How was Visual Advantages brought to life?
VA: I never had any intention of starting a business, actually. I started out working as a freelance photo stylist with multiple photographers in the Dallas area – styling models. I felt really lucky to be working with so many unbelievably talented people, especially during a time when the amateur photographer is rampant. Unlike the average consumer, I respect the real talent and the passion of the true professional photographer.

Over time, people started coming to me asking for photographers, or they assumed I was a photographer. It was a common mistake, and I would happily introduce them to the right photographer for their needs, as well as style their shoot myself. Then I realized this could be a real business, thus Visual Advantages was born.

GM: Excellent story! Amazing how our talents and gifts for doing certain things can ultimately pave the way for our success. You’ve worked with so many; what genre’s and styles interest you most and work best for your services?
VA: As someone working in a creative profession, you will always fight the need for money vs. the need to express yourself for the sake of expression. Hopefully one will work with the other, but many times they collide. As a new business, I have been focusing on commercial photography – fashion, food, and product. But as people get to know me, as well as my business, I hope that will change, and I will be commissioned to do shoots for the sake of art.As a whole, I think Dallas needs to expand its artistic style and be open to photography as a true form of art. I think we have seen way too much glamour and pin-up. But instead of just complaining about what is happening, I have to be part of the change. I am here to create my own movement and make a name for myself as a real artist in Dallas. While L.A. or NY is great, and we can learn from them, we also need to create our own form of expression.

GM: I agree about the fashion industry in Dallas, and being a former glamour model – I would say that what we know in the U.S. about glamour – is not all that Glamour Modeling really is. Time…and progress will tell what becomes of it. I do hope you and those who share your passion are able to make the effective changes and impact that you desire. It is so needed. With that said, you have obviously seen some great work that has enlightened you about the process and industry. What or who, specifically, inspires you?
VA: I am inspired by history, art, as well as fashion. All of it goes back to humanity and our need for power, love, money, beauty, and God.

GM: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could?
VA: I think any industry where amateurs can pick up an expensive camera and just start shooting away will always fight to be respected. But part of the problem is that the consumer is not educated enough in photography to spot the fakes. It is my job to educate the consumer and help them through this process. I am still learning, but I know I will get better over time.

I also think photographers and stylists need to quit using local designers’ clothings in their portfolio shoots. I am part of the problem, but have since stopped. I will now only style shoots with clothing that has already launched its campaign, is currently in stores, or has come from a thrift store. Local designers need to be commissioning and paying for their own shoots and paying a fair market value.

GM: What equipment is essential for you to capture the quality that you promote?
VA: As a producer, I rely on my photographers to have the best equipment possible for the shoot. But the equipment is not just the camera. It is also the environment, the natural lighting (or lack thereof), as well as the subject. Planning a shoot is very time consuming task, and I thrive on it.As a fashion stylist, having access to amazing clothing is always a huge help! I am always looking for funky shops, amazing thrift stores, and anyone with a great closet. Art and beauty is not just confined to expensive designer stores, though it does help!

GM: Sounds like you really love what you do, Sallie. What is your ultimate GOAL for Visual Advantages?
VA: My goal for Visual Advantages is first and foremost to be a well respected Dallas photography company in the United States. I want people to know my name, as well as know my company’s name. Profits will always be important, but they will always be secondary to respect and integrity.As for where it goes and what it becomes as a business, I am slowly letting this business define and create itself. “I kind of see it like work of art. You have a canvas that is blank, and little by little, you add color, shape, and form. While you can plan all along, it will never look quite like you imagined!” <—- Love that!!

GM:How Fabulous! May I quote you? I guess I just did. Haha. Any other personal or professional goals to share?
VA: To continually expand my portfolio, meet amazing talent, and grow! I also need to continue to travel, not because I do not love my fellow Dallas-ites, but because I need to let other parts of the country see that there is amazing talent here in Texas.

GM: Absolutely. In Dallas, and abroad…Who are your clients?
VA: My clients are typically e-commerce sites, and I am also slowly gaining publications.

GM: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date…
VA: I just returned from L.A. where I got to work with some great talent for modelwirenetwork.com. The website did not dictate the type of photography, or what we created, so it was pure creative freedom. Bliss!

GM: What advice do you have for Photographers, Models, Stylists and other industry professionals who wish to succeed in commercial photography?
VA: I would say you always should have a goal. I see a lot of photographers who are willing to shoot just about anything, and a lot of stylists who will work with anyone. In order to be respected, you need to set a standard. I am not saying you need to be a snob, but working for the sake of working is fruitless.

Also, if you are a model who is willing to pose in the nude or in lingerie, you really need to be careful. Not just for safety reasons, but also because the majority of the nude photography is not art, but verging on pornography. Once you go there, it is hard to come back and be taken seriously as a model who can do commercial or fashion work.

Also, treat each other with respect. This is a small industry, and if you treat people badly, word spreads quickly, and you will be pigeon-holed as an amateur, and all you will be left shooting is babies and weddings!

GM: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?
VA: I am producer and stylist who couldn’t care less about what I look like; I am hopelessly happy with myself and who I am as a person. I am more interested in creating the art and fantasy. Sometimes I even forget what I look like until I look in the mirror.

So if you expect to meet some fashionista, sorry to disappoint you!

I recently had the opportunity to work with high-end Italian swimwear designer Masquenada in Miami, photographing the upcoming 2012 line. Their bold, colorful designs can be seen anywhere from the exotic beaches of Dubai to walking the runways right here in the United States. A third-generation swimwear designer, Marco Staderini broke from the parent line to create his own label based on a more youthful, spiritual design approach. Masquenada’s debut at Phoenix Fashion Week in 2010 marked an emergence into the American market. Their swimwear has since made a big splash in the Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit edition, modeled by Chrissy Teigen.

Our whirlwind shoot in two exotic Miami locations incorporated the very elements from which Masquenada draws inspiration: fire, water, wind and earth. Strong patterns and interesting design features like Swarovski crystals are a hallmark of their designs and the product line extends beyond just swimwear.

GlamModelz Magazine: How long has your company been making fine swimwear? Masquenada: Our parent line has been in the swimwear business for 40 years, and the Masquenada brand was created in 2000.

GlamModelz Magazine: What first got you interested in hair and make-up? Jodi: As a child, my mom was one of the top Mary Kay saleswomen in the country. So, needless to say we had more makeup around the house than one little girl knew what to do with. Often you could find me hiding in the makeup closet coming up with my own versions of five year old glam. And then there was Carolyn, my moms hair dresser. She was amazing, a tall woman with bright red permed hair and a fantastic loud laugh. This was the 80′s , she was at the height of fashion and I thought she was it. She had the best stories of what sounded like the most glamours life ever, it was what I wanted to be.

GlamModelz Magazine: What can models and photographers expect in working with you? Jodi: Well, I am pretty laid back and fun to work with. If you can dream it up I will be more than happy to make it happen. I always have extra hair and accessories on hand to play with. I love to help and never mind pitching in on holding a reflector or light. Actually, if I ever get tired doing makeup I may have a lucrative career as a camera assistant…haha

GlamModelz Magazine: I noticed you do a lot of work with Julian Wilde, can you tell us what that is like? Jodi: Well you walk off the elevator on the top floor of this historic building downtown you are instantly transported to some palace in Paris, crown molding everywhere, gorgeous little things tucked around the room, a grand ballroom with a magical stage and the architecture will drop your mouth wide open. Then you are greeted by Julian Wilde, with a giant “HELLLOOO!!”. He will make you a drink and give you the run down of the days shoot. On the way back to the makeup room I will always stop by the office where Raven Wilde sits behind her giant marble desk always looking beautiful. We will look all her new amazing finds, she has a mind-blowing collection of accessories, shoes and clothing. Her shoe wall alone will make any red blooded woman giddy with excitement, floor to ceiling shelves of the coolest shoes ever made.

Once the model is out of makeup and hair, Raven will dress them and then Julian works his magic with lighting and fantastical sets, all of which he dreams up and builds himself. It is not rare to find Julian on a fifteen foot ladder, painting, or constructing something right before a shoot all in Versace I might add. A shoot with the Wildes can take anywhere from two hours to all day, either way it is always a great time. Watching and listening to Julian work is priceless.

GlamModelz Magazine: What is the most extreme request you have gotten to date? Jodi: Well…I do do a lot of extreme looks, but the one that comes to mind first was painting a model head to toe in white paint, every inch of her had to be white, EVERYTHING!! Lets just say we got real close that day.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advise for aspiring makeup artists?

Jodi: SHOOT with AS many people as possible! Different styles, different levels, different models it all equals a diverse portfolio and each shoot can be a huge learning experience. Practice! Practice! Practice on anyone who will let you, chase them down if you have to. Do not be afraid to play around with makeup. Not everything has to be extreme to make a statement, sometimes a little can make just as much of one. Also, there are so many different makeup manufactures out there, don’t be afraid to check them out, you may find something your kit just can’t live without.

You will not always get paid, especially at first. Doing trade shoots is a great way to meet people and build your portfolio. If you show up with a great attitude and put some effort in what you are doing you will be surprised how fast you can build a good reputation. On the other hand if you are late, “flakey”, gossipy or just uninterested you will also be surprised how fast that reputation can turn into a bad one. Just remember even though you are having fun it is still a job and at the end of the day a polite professional attitude will win out and make everyone’s life a little easier.

GlamModelz Magazine: Where did you receive your training? Jodi: My formal training was done at The International Academy in Florida, where I received my license for hair, skin and nails. Although, I started young making up and cutting hair on my Barbies then friends.

As a huge believer in continuing education, I have attended countless classes learning from the industries top professionals. Continuing education is worth every penny (sometimes it’s even free!) because the knowledge you learn is so helpful in your craft and opens you up to new ideas.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you could dream of any gig in this industry what would it be? Jodi: Funny you ask this because it is actually a question I have thought about a lot lately. The Northwest photographers and clients I have worked with have defiantly kept me busy. They all have such different styles and visions, but I have recently found myself daydreaming of giant editorial shoots in London or Paris. I would not like to move there permanently or anything (I love Portland way too much) but a month or two long “working vacation” would just be dreamy!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us a little about what or who inspires you? Jodi: There are so many sources to draw inspiration from that I find in my friends, photographers, models,designers, random people, magazines, nature,beauty, love, hate, music, but mostly when it comes down to it, it is the raw canvas of the subject I am working on. It may sound a little cheezy but I really do look for the beauty in everyone I work on. There is always something that is beautiful about someone, whether it be lovely eyes or seductive lips, being inspired by it paints the whole picture in my head to translate.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you think of the industry? anything you would like to see changed? Jodi: The industry as a whole has been pretty good to me. There are so many different styles and avenues that models, photographers and Mua’s can go in, to me that keeps it interesting. Working with so many people in the industry I have run into some types that I wish would go away, 95% of people I work with are none of these types and are completely amazing, but there are those few; the gossipers, please stop. It really makes the whole shoot uncomfortable and it makes you look just as bad in the long run. It will be hard for people to trust you or even stand up for you if someone is gossiping about you at some other time. Find something else to talk about, shopping, music, unicorns, whatever..just stop. The complainers, if I have not even touched you yet and you are already complaining about things, it is not a good sign. Have some trust, even if you have not been happy with an MUA in the past. It is just a bad way to start things off, relax and have some faith, you may be surprised! And if it is totally horrible you can always just blame the MUA anyhow. FLAKES! Seriously, this could be my major pet peeve. If you have a legit reason, okay. But your grandma and dog can only die so many times. There is a lot of effort that goes into a shoot and to cancel at the last minute or just vanish all together is just not good. Then to do it over and over, even worse. Like I said at the beginning, almost all of who I work with is none of these, this is just a collective of individuals I have met over an 8 year span of time.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any personal projects you would like to do, or have done? Jodi: Yes! Recently I joined the extremely talented styling team at The National Beauty salon (www.TheNationalBeauty.com). So I am working on building up more salon work and looking into being more on the educator side of things.

Also one of the National Beauty owners Heidi and I have started our own line of accessories and feather hair extensions. It is called “Feathers and Leathers” and we are on facebook, of course! Look for us in stores around Portland and hopefully further out in the near future.

GlamModelz Magazine: Ok don’t lie, you work with one of our contributing photographers, Sam Rambo is sort of cool huh?I mean with a name like Rambo, haha Jodi: SAM?! He is actually super awesome!! Better than cool! Shooting with him is like hanging out with a really good friend. He is super laid back and open to any ideas. He has the coolest gadgets that he has made or acquired and now that he has his trusty IPAD I am pretty sure he is unstoppable. Do be ready to go to some crazy locations if you shoot outdoors with him. The last time we shot I followed him in his little red Spider sports car in my VW Bug up a dirt gravel road with 2 models in the car and dust kicking up everywhere. When we made it to the the top it was all worth it, beautiful rolling hills and those big electric generating windmills, it was all very surreal and totally worth the car wash later. You always end up with fantastic images, and some fun stories. Plus he always shoots really cool models which always makes the day go by so nice and smooth!

GlamModelz Magazine: What is the hardest thing you have had to do? Jodi: Wow, good question. Thinking back, it would probably have to be just starting out as a makeup artist. Trying to be confident but so nervous on the inside. I would always take it so hard if someone didn’t like it or a model would come out of the bathroom with completely different makeup after I did it. Always worrying if you were going to get more jobs, how much to charge ect.. It was hard in the beginning, but I learned that you just can not skip over the experience part. You have to mess up and just learn from it. Thankfully it does not happen anymore, but I am prepared if it does!

GlamModelz Magazine: I have heard a rumor that you are also in a rock band? What is that like? Jodi: I am!! It is one of my other passions in life. I started playing music at a young age and continued it to college. Now I am a bass player in an all female band called Little Volcano. It has been such an amazing experience being around so many talented women. They inspire me to be even more creative and take more chances in life. Jim Jurica, of Hanover Park, Illinois, is our featured guest Photographer of April. Jim, has a distinctive style and artistic look and an eye for beauty and grace.GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Jim:

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Jim: I like to shoot about everything! And I don’t like to linger too long at shooting any one style. Glamour is more of a recent addition to my portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Jim: I find inspiration in the models themselves. Before a shoot, I like to sit and talk with them one-on-one for as long as it takes to earn their trust and learn a little about who they are as a person first. Then I try to work their personality into the shoots.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Jim: Challenges? It’s a daunting task to be a generalist in an industry full of specialists. I need to be proficient in all kinds of imagery to stay afloat in my core business (stock photography). However, it’s the challenge of always doing something new and different that I enjoy most, so I wouldn’t change that one bit.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Jim: I’m a softbox addict. I own just about every size and shape of softbox you can think of. But more and more I keep finding I can get equivalent looks with umbrellas and the understanding of how to use them properly.

Also: shadows. I think of shadows and contrast as just another tool in my arsenal. I believe that sometimes what you DON’T show is more important. It’s that tease and hint of something more to an image that gets people looking twice.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Jim: I know many photographers look down their nose at the idea of trade shoots but I do them all the time. Partly because the nature of stock photography is speculative and difficult to justify paying models when I don’t know if the shots will make money. But also because photography isn’t just a business, it’s also my hobby. Trade shoots help keep things fun and fresh.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Jim: I usually work with models that can do their own hair and makeup. That being said, I’ve been incorporating more MUA’s and stylists into the mix more lately. I tend to avoid models that are too well established because they bring the same looks that everyone else has in their portfolios. Rarely do I choose a model based on beauty alone. I look for personality or anything that says this is real, live person and collaborator, not just a pretty prop. This could be the facial expression or posing in their images. Or a consistency of interesting shots they’ve produced with other photographers that tells me the model has played a large part of the process. And sometimes it’s a simple as what they write when messaging back and forth that clicks and tells me I’ll enjoy working with them.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Jim: Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Move your lights around see what happens. The wonderful thing about photography is that we get to bury our bad shots and no one is the wiser for it. If you take time to try different approaches (rather than simply duplicate what has always worked in the past) you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Second piece of advice: only post your best work. One good image is worth dozens of mediocre shots. Leave them wanting more.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Jim: Completing my “100 Topless Models” project. The premise sounds simple: a studio shoot combining art nude and beauty shot styles. Add a unique posing prop to each set for variety, and a color-coordinated spotlight on the backdrop to match the color of the prop.

In reality, shooting the project with over 100 models consumed the better part of one year of my life. To get all these models to work on my project on a TF basis, I did plenty of trade shoots for their portfolio needs. My fastest shoot was only fifteen minutes long. The longest was eight hours of fashion looks in exchange for less than ten minutes of time working on my project.

I set only two rules: (1) we couldn’t shoot any prop that had previously been used for another set and (2) I couldn’t say no to anyone who responded. Some of the “models” weren’t models at all, but rather makeup artists, other photographers, friends of models, and even one person who just walked in off the street. As the project progressed, some of the props started getting crazier and more elaborate. We used everything from flowers, scarves and jewelry to a slinky toy, body paint, raw meat, fake blood and even a live python.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Jim: Being pretty is NOT enough. You need to be a bit of a salesman too. Outside of the occasional shoot for fun, modeling is a lot of work and to be successful requires trying lots of different approaches to see what sticks. You need to be proactive about messaging and always respond in a timely manner. The ability to show up for shoots on time and prepared is essential. And don’t take rejections personally!

Also, always come to shoots prepared to do your own hair and makeup, even if hair and makeup styling are provided that day. It’s not uncommon for the makeup artist to get lost and be two hours late. Or the hair stylist decides to quit the industry that day and leave everyone high-and-dry. This is your big chance to save the day and look like a real pro.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Jim: I’ve worked with over 400 models in the past four years on all kinds of content. And yet the scary fact remains that the top-selling, most published model I’ve shot is: myself. And my number-two selling model is my mother.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Jim: To always try new things and improve. In 2011, I’m focusing on more glamour publications. And of course, to continue to have fun making a living at something I love to do.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Frank: My “real job” has always been in Information Technology. I have always had an interest in photography but it wasn’t until 2003 that I actually developed an interest in fashion and glamour.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Frank: I really love shooting children and candid wedding shots, I currently shoot for LifeTouch Photography and find shooting children with disabilities the most rewarding work I have ever done.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Frank: Greg Kadel’s work is probably the work that most inspires me. He has an eye for that perfect look that is just amazing.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Frank: I firmly believe that it would be a better world if ALL photographers Stopped shooting for TF*….. I don’t know a photographer that doesn’t complain about money, if we all took an oath to quit giving away our work …. That complaint would soon go away.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Frank: A good eye… Cameras, lens, lights, meters are all good to have but without an eye for the subject it really doesn’t matter what equipment you are using.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Frank: My major focus is training inexperienced people who have a dream into turnkey posers with the ability to do a three hour shoot with no direction. When I do have a model that goes through my training and he/she becomes successful as a model then I have reach my goal.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Frank: A drive for perfection… a never ending desire to obtain a look that will make a perfect picture.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Frank: Take down all the walls that are in front of them and just go for it… They must have an eye on the goal at all times and consistently raise thee bar with who you work with …

It has come to my attention, in these rough times and down economy, people are losing their jobs at a record pace, and technology is at a rapid fire overload. Your local market has gotten flooded with the weekend photographers. These weekend warriors go down to the local “Blah-mart” and find that $399 “weekend warrior special” camera that comes with the kit 18-55mm lens and complementary leather adorned carrying bag. That’s right, these are the people who lurk in the darkness, and when you are not looking, post that late night ad on craigslist offering to do weddings for $100.00 and glamour shoot for free, heck some will even pay you! Baw ha ha ha. In all seriousness, I’m not saying these are “bad” people, but I will say they might be a little inexperienced.

I do understand that the times are tough out there. All I’m asking is that you give a good photographer a little respect. People always ask “why should I pay you?” or “why should I pay him, when John Doe down the road is willing to shoot me for free?” My response is always, “Because there are different categories of photographers!” You may be asking yourself, “well if you all have the same cameras… won’t the images be the same?” This is a simple, flat out, no! There are many reasons for this, sorry but not all photographer were created equal. The reason is simple, artistic vision. I may see something as sharp and sexy, and someone else may see the same scene as beautiful and squishy. This is only the beginning, I haven’t even scratched the surface of the difference between the photographers.

Starting off you have to know great terms like GWC (guy with camera) this is a guy who is there for dating, might give you the creeps, and normally his images will show that always tell-tale lack of thought or skill. If you encounter one of these local GWC in the wild, stay calm and slowly back away! Don’t make any sudden moves, they have been known to turn all stalker-like weird on you. Now that we have eliminated the GWC, the next one you might in encounter is the “well I’m just a amateur”, we will call him “amateur” for short.

The amateur has been known to always give his advice, even when he has no clue about the subject, if he is wrong he will simply say “well I’m just a amateur”. Other tell-tell signs that you might be in the present of the amateur is, a stunning lack technical knowledge or equipment, they have been know to leave the camera dial in the “green mode”, or if his camera has the infamous word “rebel” (rebel does not mean sexy outlaw). While the amateur is not usually a bad guy, beware that you may not get the images you actually wanted, but on the positive side, he is working to develop his skills in hopes to one day raise himself to the next level….semi-pro.

The “Semi-pro” we will call him SP for short. SP normally has a very good skill set, and can produce some great works of art. When you come across an SP, you will find good equipment, a good understanding, he or she will be able to give you the images you desire, and they have invested lot of time and money into what they have become. The SP definitely warrants some money being thrown his or her way. Some of the tell-tell signs that you might be in the present of a SP are, they will normally have thousands invested in software, they will normally have an elaborate external lighting system, a camera that just looks expensive, the camera dial will not be in the “green mode” and there favorite lens, will have cost more than all of your cell phones and point and shoot cameras together. SP for one reason or another just hasn’t decide to jump into the streets of Spain during the running of the bulls to hang with the “PROs”.

Now we come to the rarest of them all, the PROs, these photogs are on another level of higher being, we don’t dare give them a nickname. The PRO, this person is amazing, the ground trembles when they walk in for a shoot. These people live, breath, drink, and sweat photography, 90% of everything they discuss is photography, their best friends are all in the business. They spend more time in a week talking photography than you do talking to your family all year. A great makeup artist is not a option, it’s a way of life. If your were to say the word “medium” they would instantly say “format”. If you come across one of these rare specimen, and you want to work with them, be prepared to open that pocket book and keep on giving! what you consider a days wage, they consider “lunch money”. What you consider a lot of money for a good car, they consider a down payment on the next camera. That’s right these cameras can cost as much supped up sports car. These people have worked hard to get where they have, so give them a little RES-P-E-C-T!

Every photog has it place (well besides the GWC) and if your are a photog looking to progress here is a few tips from me to you:

1. The only person that matters in the end is the client, make them happy, you are a success.

2. Make a connection with the model, if you complete this, that is 50% of the image, keep it light and fun.

3. Be well rounded, be able to pull off the high fashion look, the sexy dark glam look, artistic B&W look.

4. Invest in yourself, invest the time in learning, the money in the “right” equipment….

5. Don’t be creepy, there are too many photogs that remind me of peeping toms, or 30+ year old losers looking for a date (don’t be that bum)

6. Work as a team, use the ideas and knowledge of the makeup artist, models….. everyone!

7. Give guidance, not commands. When talking to the model, make recommendations, don’t tell them what to do.

8. Share your success and keep your failures. If it’s amazing, give credit where credit is due, if it’s an epic fail, take full responsibility for that!

9. Give back, if you achieve a level due to the help of others in any way, then return the favor to someone else that might need it.

10. No negative lists, if you have problem models, never create a negative list or make it public for others to see. (was taught to me by a wise young man).

11. Help models, help the models get to places they want to get to, use your connections to help them out. Also give guidance to models on people you recommend they shoot with, and warn them who not to shoot with.

12. Celebrate the success of others, be happy for the achievements of other good people, models, photographer, MUA…..

13. You don’t own anything! Never treat a model like she is your property, do the opposite, encourage them to get out and shoot with the world, and get their name known!

14. Network, talk to people, lots of people, did I say lots? get out there and get your name out there.

15. Find a mentor & mentor someone else. Never stop learning and it’s great to help people along the way.

In the end I think that is what we all want, just a little respect.

Most photographer have the majority of the supplies needed to make this little trick come to life. The first thing you will need is one amazing model, please help me welcome Alysson Holt, a premier model in the Northwest. Next thing needed for this trick is a set of strobes I highly recommend the Alien Bees line of products, you will also need a large soft box with a grid, and 20-40 deg grids for your 7” reflectors. Others supplies that will be needed while shooting this is tanning oil, a simple back drop, RF triggers, Photoshop, and a little plug-in called portraiture ( which some of my work is also featured on there site).

Now let’s talk about some setting….well I shoot raw plus, but I edit Jpg , I know this is one point that can stir the pot rather well, but when I shoot, I make sure everything is setup exactly the way I want it, to include my WB (I actually set my WB manually) I know a lot of people out there set it to one of the presets, or let the cameras presets determine, but I like to bring my WB a little higher on the rich colorful side of the tones. Basically I set it for the temperature of my lights, and then tweak the colors hues. Then I get to my lighting and most of the work I do now days, I have all of my Alien Bees set at 1/32 to 1/16 power, heck some of the images the model is only inches away from a the really big soft box. Next I take my aperture down to about 2.4-6, that really seems to add to the over all tones and lighting nicely. The low lighting/wide aperture combos really brings out the shadows and highlights very well, along with creating a nice depth of field. Other setting to think about is your shutter speed, not that critical here, some where between 1/125 – 1/200 sec depending on your cameras sync speed, and of course you ISO, mine rarely goes off 100.

As far as getting into the lighting setup, I think there are a couple of things that you will want to keep in mind. First thing is to control your lighting! Your best bet is to use grid on every light, and you don’t want your lighting to hose your model down but to gently paint her with rich colorful tones. Next tip is to set up each light individually. Set your first light, and adjust it, then move on to then next, and keep going until you have created that image you are looking for. Here is the most important step, well I seem to think so, don’t let your lighting hit the backdrop, I see you scratching your head. No but really, point every light so it hits your model without blowing out the backdrop. This does two things, first it allows for a image that has more overall depth and mystery, and second it allows you to light your back drop separately, hence you can use gels and use the lighting to change the color of the backdrop.

Every image you see in this article was created using these lighting techniques, and shot on a “pure white” paper backdrop, also they were shot using no more than three lights. So you can easily see that it’s not necessarily about the amount of lights, but more about controlling the direction of light, and the amount, sort of like one of those fancy spray guns you put on your garden hose that allows you to control the volume of water and the pattern.

Well now that we have our shot, and it looks great as is, but we want to add a little something extra, I turn to my old friend Portraiture, I select the skin and apply the softening to usually about default level, I don’t want to over soften the image too much, I still want it to have a crisp clean feel to it. I will go through my images and touch up any blemishes I may come across, not that the fine young Miss Holt here has any, and in a final review I might apply a high pass filter in a overlay layer. I guess you can say when it comes to the technical side of photography, most people would cringe at what I do, and there is very little room for error in the way I shoot, but man I love the results that I get! Most of my stuff is very close to as shot when it comes to the lighting, colors and tones. Then all I have to do in post is a little skin “pop”, and add a little detail and “Bingo” one amazing image of one amazing model. When a person dreams of one day “becoming a model”, Fashion Modeling may be the genre that initially comes to mind. Popularized and glamorized by such shows as “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway”, fashion modeling is placed in the forefront of the minds of the general public as the caste representation of what being a model really means.

But as many of us know, there are many different styles and genres, as well as varying bases upon which modeling is “Fashioned”.

Do you have what it takes to be a successful model? Consider with me the following questions,

1. Do you know what genre of modeling is right for you?

2. Do you know how a successful model becomes successful and generates income from her/his work?

If arriving at an answer to either or both of those questions was difficult for you, the series of articles written in this months and next months issues should help you find answers to both of those questions. They will assist you in defining and reaching your goals while discovering your very own personal style.

So for the first question: What genre of modeling is right for you?

I have categorized modeling genres based on two criteria; Modeling Based on a Purpose and Modeling Based on Clothing or a “Look”. Although others may classify genres based on a particular market, I feel there are too many grey areas and exceptions with the generalizations in market representative classification.

Modeling Based on a Purpose

High Fashion models are almost always tall, slender and may begin modeling at a very

young age. They may be hired by designers, photographers and others based on how they believe the model will look and model their clothing during a modeling interview called a “Go-See”. The fashion and the design of the garment is the object of focus and the model is often considered an attractive clothes hanger. He/she must have grace and skill in showcasing a garment to be successful in the area of high fashion, runway or otherwise. Female High fashion models are expected to be at least 5’9”, wearing a size 0 to 6, and males are 5’11” to 6’2”. Agency representation is a viable option for models seeking work as a high fashion model, particularly in the fashion hubs of London, Paris, Milan, New York, and Los Angeles.

Casual fashion also has the purpose of showcasing clothing, but the clothing is more casual, everyday wear rather than those you’d find on the runway. Casual fashion models may model for department stores or print ads and circulars, and they are also usually taller than average. Most are over 5’7” and are a size 0 to 8 for females; for males 5’9” to 6’2”. Most casual fashion models find working with a reputable model/talent agency presents the best chance for success.

Glamour Modeling is probably one of the most misunderstood genres in the industry, and is one of the primary focuses in GlamModelz Magazine. So let’s start by looking at the definition of the word, Glamour by Merriam-Webster, to gain some understanding:

In that definition, neither the word sexual, nude nor sensual appears but the word “illusory” does. There is a common perception and belief (even by those in the Glamour Modeling industry) that the model and image in a glamour modeling project should convey a more sexy or sensual appeal to the viewer.

Glamour photography often involves the use of airbrushing, advanced makeup techniques, and wardrobe styling to achieve the concept desired or the illusion which is used to excite or catch the attention the viewer. Resulting in an appeal toward the model or a desire to be a part of the illusion that is presented.

In short, the focus and purpose of Glamour Modeling is the creation of an image that highlights the glamour and beauty of a model in his/her surroundings to convey a mood or feeling or produce a positive reaction that appeals to the senses. I believe the use of the resulting glamour images is catalyst for the confusion that may evolve…but that’s another topic entirely.

A glamour model may be seen as a pin-up, in a calendar or advertisement in a mainstream magazine or even in the pages of playboy, MAXIM or other men’s magazines. She/He may be wearing designer clothing, a swimsuit, lingerie, or even semi-nude or fully nude. There is no height requirement, but a proportionate and shapely body is what brings most glamour models greatest degree of success and popularity.

Agency representation is helpful, but most are able to find work through their own marketing efforts and image submission to magazines and others. It is important in this genre to check references of those you will work with and be alert as to the way your images are being used.

Fitness Modeling – As with Glamour modeling, there is generally no height/weight requirement for fitness modeling, however, the model must have achieved a certain level of visible physical fitness. Musculature and lean body mass are essential to the success of a fitness model. (Not to be confused with a “fit model” that is described later in the article)

The purpose of fitness modeling is to promote fitness, well-being and health, to model clothing and other fitness apparel and/or demonstrate special moves that display athletic ability or examples for teaching/training. The successful fitness model can be found in advertisements for magazines, television and local, regional or national promotions for well-known health and fitness products.

Editorial Modeling is another of those confusing or misunderstood genres.

Editorial modeling means that you are modeling for publications/magazines such as major publications like Elle, Mademoiselle, Seventeen, and the on-the-rise digital and web-based magazines.

Editorial Model: Raechel Brown /Photographer: Okie Studios

The purpose of editorial modeling is to illustrate a topic that is being discussed such as music, movies, recreation, finance or vacationing, for instance. The models in this article who are illustrating the various genres of modeling can be considered editorial models for this magazine.

The main employer for the editorial model is the magazine or publisher and his/her success depends on being able to convey the concept the magazine/publisher is looking for.

Promotional Modeling is done at trade shows, conventions, night clubs, fairs and other public events in which the need for a very attractive, height/weight proportionate representative of a company or product is filled. The models demonstrate products, hand out leaflets or brochures, and answer questions.

The pay is good, but the payment schedule varies considerably with an average turn-around time of about 2 to 6 weeks. A model may contract with a promotional modeling agency or browse internet job search sites for seasonal work. Many models who have decided to take their career to the full-time level are promotional models in between the more high-paying gigs, and are doing well.

Modeling Based on Clothing or a Look:

Often, a style of modeling will be defined based on the clothing the model is wearing, (or not wearing) or the look of the actual model, themselves.

The above mentioned Fashion, Editorial and Glamour modeling may be divided into sub-categories based on clothing like Designer Wear, Prêt a Porter, Club Wear, Denim, Lingerie, Footwear, Sportswear, Swimsuit and Nude.

Character and Specialty Modeling is based on the “look” of the model and has a variety of subcategories such as: Parts, Urban, Beauty, Fit Model, Alternative (Fetish, Goth, Latex, Burlesque, Tattooed) Fine Art, Plus-size, Petite, etc.

Character Modeling involves models with an everyday look, such as a schoolteacher, grocery clerk, nurse, truck driver, mechanic, appliance repair person, soccer mom, etc. This concept is interchangeable with the term “Speciality Extra” when there is a casting call for a television or film production. The pay is usually minimum wage, unless you have a higher pay rate because of a contractual agreement with an agency.

Speciality Modeling

Parts Modeling involves concentration on a particular area or “part” of the body. There is rarely any other requirements than that the part being modeled is as close to perfect as possible, and remains that way if he/she wishes to continue modeling.

Urban Glam Model: Allura Nycole /Photographer: Visions East

Urban Models are edgy, yet beautiful and although sometimes called “Ethnic” Models, an urban model is not necessarily a model with a minority background. Urban modeling represents a form of beauty found in cultures that aren’t always celebrated in couture or high-fashion magazines. Often, an urban model finds success in a genre based on purpose (fashion, glamour, fitness) in addition to focusing on a specific look or background.

Beauty Modeling is a style used for advertising makeup and other products that accentuate “beauty” so it is very important to have a beautiful face with a flawless complexion. Beauty Models find work for makeup manufacturers, jewelry designers, and the like. They typically have the greatest amount of success through representation with an agency.

A Fit Model is not the same as a Fitness Model (described earlier), as a Fit model works directly with a designer in most cases, and the garment is made to “fit” that model to showcase their work and there is no element of muscularity required. Some fit models are required to be a particular size usually a size 7 or 10 in clothing and a size 6 shoe, when modeling for department stores.

Alternative Model: Ruca *Photographer: SiVad *MUA: Jenny Torry *Haircut&Styling: Sharin Faith *HairColor: Cody Patterson

An Alternative Model fits a genre in which the models do not represent mainstream ideals of beauty. Alternative models often have a recognizably personalized style like goth, burlesque, latex and fetishism. An alternative model may also be pierced, tattooed or have unique hair-styles and designs.

There are many print magazines with opportunities for the Alternative Model, as well as trade shows, conventions and work with specialty clothing stores.

Fine Art Modeling often, if not always involves nudity. Many fine art models are sought for art classes at universities, private classes, working with photographers, painters, sculptors and others to model for their work of art.

Although there is some compensation for work as a Fine Art, Artist or Figure Model, the fantastic reward in this type of modeling is usually for “arts” sake.

Plus-Sized and Petite Modeling is based on a models clothing size or height, although generally the model must also be very attractive and proportionate in size.

Curvy Model: Jasmin Jewlz/Photographer: Nevada Fantasies

A Plus-sized or Curvy Model must be over the standard clothing size of 0 to 8, (ranging from a size 10 to 16 for print and magazines), but must still meet the height requirements of high fashion and casual fashion.

A petite model should still be a size 0 to 6 but is no taller than 5’4 (ranging from 5’0” to 5’6” for magazines), unless she is Petite/Plus. Of course, these sizes and heights may also vary based on the actual need of the magazine, manufacturer, designer, etc.

Many agencies are adding a Plus-Size category to their repertoire, although petite modeling still has a way to go, as far as recognizable acceptance in the mainstream industry.

So, you want to be a model?

Then, I hope this information has helped you in discovering your purpose and understanding to cultivate and enhance your Look in regards to modeling.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Brandon Gamble: I’ve been in the fashion and photography industry since 1987. Starting as a model for California Fashions I was introduced to the commercial world of fashion and introduced to Rafael Martin who shot for many of the high end clothing companies in Los Angeles and San Francisco. After leaving the modeling industry and assisting Rafael on hundreds of shoots I began shooting my own photography for my production company Top Entertainment which provided models and dancers for runway, production shows, and corporate events. After moving to Las Vegas in 1990 I continued to do photography for the dancers and models of Las Vegas and began my own work in fashion photography. My eye for the artistic elements and my attention for details of the fashion industry made my work very sought after and popular. I have a natural passion for bringing my subjects to a comfortable, calm, and relaxed state to bring out the best in anyone or anything. I’m truly easy to work with and to be around. I love the fashion and glamour industry and continue to grow as top photographer in the business.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Brandon Gamble: I like glamour and beauty because there is such a vast array of artistic shoots. You’ve got different cultures within the models, make up possibilities, and unlimited spectrum of themes to explore. I’ve always had an affinity for the depth of black and white artistic scapes.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Brandon Gamble: Positive models who bring lots of energy, excitement, and intrigue to the shoots. Models who are open and fun who allow my creative side to be explored and blossom. Its difficult to work with close minded models especially when there is negativity abound.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Brandon Gamble: The industry has become very flaky with no shows or late arrivals. It’s difficult to contact requested models. I’d love to see the work ethic of models, makeup artists, and hair stylists brought up to a higher more professional standard. I’ve found it difficult to coordinate with makeup artists, models, hair stylist when everyone is not on the same page with their work ethics.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Brandon Gamble: I invest a lot of time and money in my lighting and education. I am constantly reading about different lighting and techniques to enhance my work. I spend a lot of time researching lighting companies that are bringing new technologies to our art. It’s important to invest time in building and brain storming set design but not to the point of taking away from the essence or energy coming from each individual subject.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Brandon Gamble: Every professional prefers to be paid but to ignore the different ideas that men and women can bring to you that don’t have the finances to bring an incredible shot shouldn’t be ignored. Otherwise I’m always willing to listen to individuals ideas I can do TFs if my schedule will allow it.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Brandon Gamble: Sensuality, sexuality, and allure sells product. If a client comes to me to move a product that has a male base or market putting a beautiful model around or with their product in the most seductive manner would be the way to produce a shot. I believe a truly good photographer should be known as passionate about his or her work.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Fashion/Glamour/Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Brandon Gamble: I’ve always found fashion/glamour/beauty to be artistic. I’ve found whether its hair, makeup, or clothing design every one or aspect brings an artistic flair to the shoot. Pinup has always held an interest for me. I love admiring the pinup art that has transpired over the years.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Brandon Gamble: To continue on my path of success and finding new and innovative ways to bring my art to the glamour and fashion industry. I’d also like to teach and share my knowledge with aspiring photographers.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Brandon Gamble: Being prompt and on time. Have a high standard of work ethic, be adventurous and creative, listen to their director, and above all never bringing negativity to each other during a shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Brandon Gamble: Lots of networking, be open to paying your dues, and spend a lot of time with people related to the industry in social events and networking parties. Always be 100% respectful of models space and needs. Your reputation will go a long way.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Brandon Gamble: I have many accomplishments to date but one of my proudest shoots was with a gal attempting to get into Playboy magazine and the test shoot we prepared for her wasn’t published but got her into the magazine. It made me feel excellent that I helped this individual achieve her dreams.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Brandon Gamble: Spend the money! There’s nothing worse than a bad portfolio. Find reputable photographers, makeup artists, and hair designers and produce an outstanding portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Brandon Gamble: I am faculty teacher and trainer for Body Arts and Science International out of Costa Mesa California certifying Pilates instructors worldwide.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Brandon Gamble: I always bring 110% to my shoots, I never do anything half assed, always totally committed, never extend myself, and desire models and clients to be completely thrilled with the outcome of my photography.

Would you tell us how you entered into modeling, what your experiences are, campaigns you have worked for and who inspires you?

My first step in entering modeling was when I use to work at Harley Davidson. I would look at all the different models on the motorcycles and decided I wanted to be in a magazine. That same year I landed in the motorcycle magazine Just Ride. I am also a promo model for Harley trade shows and as a liquor representative. The one model that inspires me the most is Marisa Miller. She the biggest supermodel in the world and has a very sexy/classy appeal

What style of modeling do you enjoy most?

The modeling style I enjoy the most is swimwear and lingerie. With swimwear modeling you get to strut your stuff in the sun as well as in the water. Although there are times when it may rain and lightening is a factor, it is still a great experience. Lingerie modeling is my second favorite because I get to show a sexy side by using the clothing, my body, and my eye expressions.

What are your goals and ambitions in this industry, where would you like to take your modeling career?

I am currently going to casting calls for big agencies in California this November so hopefully I get into Elite agency. I want to become a professional in the industry and land as far on top as possible.

Do you have any advice for aspiring models, tips or tricks, places to find the best deals for clothing—advice for hair and makeup?

The best advice I have for models now is to do photo shoot with photographers that are well known and have great talent. Try not to get caught up in so many contests. Seek out reputable agencies, it is the best choice. With clothing, try to find things that may be unique to the photo and that goes with the photographer’s style. With hair and makeup, look into the stylists before you choose. Being unhappy with how you look will ruin a portfolio photo instantly.

Tell us a little about yourself, your hobbies, favorite pastimes and ambitions outside of the modeling industry.

Some of my favorite things to do outside of modeling are riding dirt bikes, being on the back of a motorcycle, and boating. I love machines that go fast and give me a thrill. I grew up racing dirt bikes on ice so it is part of my life.

Do you have any favorite publications that you refer to for fashion advice, posing or style?

The one thing I have based my photo shoots on are the Victoria secret catalogs. It is a really classy way to show people who you are while remaining tasteful. It is also good to look at W Magazine for high fashion shoots because it shows a wide range of the fashion industry.

Lastly, how was your experience with our contributing photographer, Jeff DeHaven?

Jeff is a great photographer; he always keeps in touch with the models and is very good at getting edits back in a timely manner. He is fun to work with and always has a great assistant with him to help with the photo shoots.

Mike is an up and coming artist from Richmond, Virginia. with a refreshing style and unique eye for beauty in all areas of Photography. It’s such a pleasure to have this opportunity to find out what really makes Mike such an inspiring artist, so let’s get started!

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?

Mike: I actually picked up a camera for the first time a little over a year ago. I was pretty much focused on people with the intention of portraits with a subtle twist of individuality that seems so lacking in the usual places. I knew I wanted to shoot with people but didn’t know anybody or how to get started so I joined Model Mayhem and went to some local meet and greet events. With my wife’s encouragement I have continued to sharpen my skills, try new things, and learn more about the makeup and wardrobe styling. My wife gives me a hard time as the only guy she knows with a closet full of dresses and tutus. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour and Beauty? Mike: It has happened quite by accident although not unexpectedly. I started out doing portraits but with each successive shoot the style became more and more glamour and fashion oriented. I liked what I saw and I let the style develop itself. Now it is what I do almost exclusively.

GlamModelz Magazine: What inspires you as a photographer? Mike: I find inspiration at every turn. I look through fashion magazines and wander the cobblestone streets or industrial areas of town. Displays in the mall and people watching in the park yield ideas I have incorporated into my photographs. But most of all, I am inspired by interesting faces. It seems that every face I see tells a story and when it comes to glamour/beauty, the face always inspires the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? Mike: You mean other than time? My biggest challenge is pleasing myself…I am my own worst critic. Next would be stepping out of the box and trying new concepts to keep things fresh. I feel fortunate that photography is a serious passion but not my solitary means of income. I comment frequently that if I had to please art directors and meet deadlines or make a big profit, that I would not enjoy it as much and the incentive for creativity would be diminished in favor of a cookie cutter approach.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Mike: I’m considered a heretic…I use Sony/Minolta. My most essential pieces of equipment are my fast Zeiss lenses. I use the 85mm lens so much that I have one camera devoted to it. I shoot primarily on location and the ability to use all the available light at a lower ISO is good so I can travel light. I’d like to think that I also equip myself well with a vision of the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Mike: I’m as selective for paid, as I am TF. I might be a rebel but I like TF. It takes the pressure off and allows for more relaxed interaction among team members. Paid work is, well, work. TF is fun with the right people.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Mike: Technically unsound. Drawn to natural light. Random precision. I am very laid back and patient in a shoot and like to let the model flow through her poses. On occasion I have specific poses in mind but as a general rule I let the model stay in her groove, only stopping her to get more shots of a special look or pose that she has hit. I spend as much time getting to know the model as I do photographing her…it may lead to a great candid shot. With me, everyone in the team is encouraged to contribute; I want the end product to benefit everyone involved. Generally though, I will take the lead to ensure ‘the look’ that is desired.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Mike: Easy…to take photographs that people like to look at.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc. have to work with you? Mike: A sense of humor. Proficiency in baking is a real plus (no nuts in the chocolate chip cookies, please).

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Mike: Somehow getting my beautiful wife, Beth to put up with me for 23 years! Well, either that or beating my 12-year-old son in Madden 11…now that was big!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Mike: Create a vision. Scout locations. Keep a log of times as well as seasons that the lighting is best. Look for the light…everywhere you look there is a sweet spot of light. Read up on posing and lighting methods. And most importantly, recognize and learn from mistakes.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Mike: Punctuality and reliability may make you more money than you think. A favorable reputation of being there on time ready to shoot is one of the best things you can do for consistent work. Learn more than one facial expression and practice posing in front of a mirror…a lot and don’t wear colored contact lenses unless requested. Learn to do your own hair and makeup well. There won’t always be a MUA available and as a model, you can become a triple threat if you can do hair and makeup for yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other interests? Mike: Other than family, I enjoy mountain biking and writing. I’m also a gadget freak.

Sam Rambo: Well I have been shooting for as long as I can remember, but mostly landscape…. I joined the Air Force in 1993 and I got out in 2004. I worked in Las Vegas for a top secret government contractor. I decided, that was not the life I wanted. I moved back to Washington State and took a job with the government, doing scientific research. Then in 2006 me and my wife adopted a 3 year old boy, and it changed the way I look at people. A year or two after I reached a point I figured there had to be more to life. So I started looking into glamour/model photography. I met a wonderful photographer named Evan Moodie, he offered to teach me a style of glamour lighting and had an amazing model Lynnzie Cherelle fly in for our shoot, and well ever since then it has been a super fast ride, with some wonderful people.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Sam Rambo: There is just something about lighting up a woman’s curves with creative lighting in a way that just makes people take a second look, and that’s what I enjoy doing. I mean sometime even I have to step back look at the image and just say wow, I created that? Well I have done a little this and that, but I keep coming back to edgy side of glamour, I think it’s just something I “get” and understand.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Sam Rambo: Inspiration is everywhere I look. Sometime I happen across a port that just wows me and I ask myself, how did they do that! Other times I look at stuff like my big gold reflector and think “how hot a model would look, with the right lighting in front of that!” So I call up one of my favorite models and tell them I have something I want to try…… and usually they are game to become part of my visions.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Sam Rambo: The biggest challenge I think most photographers face is the fact of making your work pay while still maintaining a sense of who you are. Another fact that I uses to face is, I was a man trying to shoot glamour. This is due to the fact that there a darker side of this industry. When you are starting off it’s not the easiest hurdle to over come, but like I say, treat the models as if they were your own daughter. If you keep a high level of standards about your shoots, then by the simple fact of word of mouth, your name will spread is this tight nit community!

GlamModelz Magazine: What is essential for you as a predominate studio glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Sam Rambo: This is a very simple one to answer, a good open minded model! I believe that a model who is serious about what she is doing makes all the difference in the world! When I come across a good model, like Shaunna, from my shoot today, it makes my job ten times easier!

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Sam Rambo: Honestly I believe that both have there place! If a model wants me to create her vision, or wants me to recreate one of my old series of images then no doubt, it should be paid. If a model is there to create my vision, I’m open to the idea of a TF* shoot. TF* is a great way to get your port established or updated……..but lets face it, at the end of the day, I can’t going down to the local TF store pick up the rolls of paper, supplies, expensive equipment, pricey software and experience needed to produce these type of images.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Sam Rambo: This is one I can answer with a few words, edgy, sexy, classy, oh yeah and edgy! I like to create that image that makes peoples jaws drop, if I can pull off a image using nothing but a model and a simple paper backdrop, then make you take a second look, mission accomplished!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Sam Rambo: Well this where I state the obvious, I would love to end up doing paid shoots for a lot of the major magazines….. but with that being said, a better long term goal is to put out a book, a successful book, that is my life in photography, my visions, my art, and all the wonderful people I have shot. It would be nice to leave a little something behind that is 100% me.

GlamModelz Magazine: What type of person do you want to be know as? Sam Rambo: At the end of the day I want people to say, he was a good husband and dad, he was a fair and honest guy who had a true passion for everything he loved in life. Sam was Sam and it doesn’t get much better than that.

This is how I judge a successful shoot, if people walk away with a smile on there face, I did my job right! I try to be me, and I don’t change for anyone.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Sam Rambo: Ok this is one of my big things, I like to only work with people with good hearts, no divas allow through my door! For models I like them to be about creating cool edgy ideas, very open minded. For MUA’s/Stylists well I have been fortunate to work with some of the best here in the northwest! Honestly I think I love the good conversations and their creativity the best!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Sam Rambo: Some would say…I have done tons of things in both my photography life, and my day to day work life……but I would have to say it was serving my country in the US Air Force for 10 years. I’m one of those people who will never forget about all my brothers and sisters out there assuring we get a good nights sleep! All of the fine men and women who gave there lives so we have the choice to live ours how we want! Amen to them all!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Sam Rambo: Look for people who’s work you respect, talk to them, ask them how, when, why, heck offer to meet them for coffee, you will find that there are a lot of good people out there! Second, buy the right equipment once, don’t go for the cheapest lighting you can find, invest in your future! Third, get on some photography forums, get involved. Forth, keep your name clean, treat you models with respect! Fifth, network, network, network! Sixth and last, “the only rule in shooting is there is no rules”

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Sam Rambo: First, 1 or 2 great images from a good photographer is worth more than 20 ok images from a average photographer. Second, invest in yourself, get a good MUA, get a good photographer, do what little travel you need to do, to shoot with the better people. Third, never get the “diva complex” that will shut the door on opportunities you never knew existed. Forth, do your home work, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, ask around find out what type of person that photographer is. Fifth, if it sounds to good to be true, more than likely it is. Treat your opportunities like you would when buying a home. do your research. Sixth and last, drive, you need the long term drive, if you think, just because you shot with someone great next week you will be famous, 99.99% of the time your wrong, the models that get ahead keep trying and going after it, your success depends on how much drive you have!

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Sam Rambo: Well most people around me know that I’m sort of the jack of all trades, from remodeling my house, working on electronics, to tuning up my own car, I just do it, I figure it out and do it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Sam Rambo: I truly believe we should never stop learning, I think if you stop pushing yourself to improve with your next shoot, you should just call it a day and throw in the towel. No matter what you are shooting, make the last set something different, something you have never done, push your limits!
