GlamModelz:  Tell us a little about yourself and why you want to be a model? Krisha: I want to be a model because it’s something that I’ve always loved as a child and it’s something I really enjoy doing.

GlamModelz:  What are your goals with your modeling career? Krisha: My goals for my modeling career are to rock every shoot and to hopefully be signed to a major modeling agency.

GlamModelz:  Do you have the support of family and friends? Krisha: I have a ton of support from my family and friends. My mom has stuck beside me since day one. She’s my number one fan!!

GlamModelz:  What or Whom motivates you to do and be your best?  Krisha: My mom and doubters motivate me the most. My mom supports me 100% with everything I do. I also think about people in the past who have said I’d never make it as a model and that pushes me even harder to do best in everything I do.

GlamModelz:  What excited you the most when you first started modeling?  Krisha: I love fashion, hair, makeup and I love being surrounded by positive people who love modeling as much as I do.

GlamModelz:  Facial expressions are a big part of a photo session. How are you developing this skill? Krisha: Facial expressions are extremely important! The camera sees everything! I try to think positive thoughts in my head like, “you’re a diva…. you’ve got this…. you can do it!” it really helps me.

GlamModelz:  Have you had to deal with rejection from agencies and/or your peers? What advice would you give to others who will face this obstacle?  Krisha:  I’ve had to deal with rejection many times. Yes I know that it’s hard and it feels like the world is ending. I’d let someone know to never give up, stay focused, positive and don’t give up until you reach the top!

GlamModelz:  If you had one thing to say to a model just entering the industry, what would that be…and why?  Krisha:  I’d tell that person to listen to people’s opinions/comments that are already in the industry. Those will help you in the long-run.

GlamModelz:  Do you plan to go to college? What will you study?    Krisha:  I plan on to head to college immediately after high school. I plan to major in business management.

GlamModelz: . What are your hobbies and other areas of interest?  Krisha:  I have my tom boy and girly side. There’s my side I’d like to chill, play some video games and head outside to play some sports. There’s also my girly side when I want to head to the mall with my girls for a shopping spree and party by night!

GlamModelz:  How do you choose your wardrobe for a photoshoot?   Krisha:  I think about what goes excellent with my body shape, the latest trends and something that’s like “BAM!” and catches everyone’s attention.

GlamModelz:  What style/genre of modeling interests you most and why? Krisha:  I’m more interested in catalog and editorial modeling. I feel like I’d be successful and perfect for it.

GlamModelz:  Have you worked with a professional Make Up Artist? (MUA) Tell us about that experience.  Krisha:  I’ve recently worked with an AMAZING, AMAZING makeup artist, Nifa Bell. She had my makeup looking beautiful and it really boosted my confidence for my shoot. I loved it!!

Ultra-wide lenses are fantastic to use for fashion, glamour, and artistic work if you know how to handle them.

Conventional wisdom tells us that Ultra-wide lenses should not be used for portraits.

Why?  Well simple; they distort!  When I say distort, I don’t mean a subtle vignette effect I mean a real radial distortion.

Don’t get me wrong, you won’t get something that looks like a fisheye distortion, but clearly you will have a lesser effect of that.

There are basically two types of radial distortion you can expect:

1.  Barrel Distortion (See Example Below)

2.  Pincushion Distortion (See Example Below)

Barrel distortion creates an effect that brings the center “closer” to the viewer.

Pincushion creates an effect that “pushes” the center away from the viewer.

Instead of trying to fix the distortion, why not embrace it!  I’m going to give you a number of examples that really leverage the distortion characteristics of ultra-wide lenses to their benefit.  I’m also going to include a select lighting diagram for a couple of the examples to give you a perspective of the technique.

Ultra-wide Example 1

Two things stand out when I look at Example 1.  First it’s the perspective. Ultra-wide portrait work is dependent upon perspective to make the image work.  Second is the model’s pose.  I would consider this far from a “beauty” shot however if you help the model pose to combine the ultra-wide distortion and the perspective you can call out attributes such as her long legs.

Also the fashion aspect of this comes in from the use of the wonderful thigh-high boots.   What a fantastic way to highlight the boots in drawing them right into the viewer.  The low perspective, distortion from the ultra-wide, and model’s pose all bring the boots to the center of attention.

The leading lines of her legs draw your eyes up to her torso and ultimately to her beautiful face.  As editorial a pose this might be, the elements of fashion and art are still present and work well.  The finish is just to help blend the look into the environment.

This second example is more traditional fashion but still using the ultra-wide lens.

Notice the extremely low perspective once again. Through the distortion of the lens the illusion of a much larger scale draws you into the picture.  This is an example where the distortion clearly benefits the environment.

This is one of my favorite examples of fashion using ultra-wide angle photography because it leverages elements of the environment to create more interest.

My philosophy is to create an extreme amount of visual interest to make the viewer pay attention. Once you captured the viewer’s attention and draw them in, then it’s our job to highlight make sure that the rest is taken care of.  If it’s fashion, making sure the outfit is demonstrated appropriately.

When you first look at this picture your eyes are drawn to the model’s legs and move up her dress then ultimately to the fantastic tower at the historic Boise Train Depot.

Ultra-wide Example 3

This next example shows how the perspective plus the ultra-wide lens can work again for fashion and give an artistic flair as well.

This period feeling picture is featuring the model and wardrobe with her flapper style.  Because of the low perspective your eyes are drawn to the closest part of the picture which is the model’s legs.  As in Example 2, your eyes move up the model to her wardrobe, to the environment which is a vintage elevator.

The intent is to once again draw the viewer’s eye to what you want them to look at.  Lines lead the eye and what better lines to follow than a beautiful model’s legs!

Another added benefit of this type of technique is that you make the model look really long and tall.  This model is probably 5’3″ but the illusion of height is fantastic with the ultra-wide.

An added note is that the composition of this picture highlights the model of course, but also the great characteristics of the elevator such as the wonderful vintage floor indicator over the entry.

Ultra-wide Example 4

Next we have an example that is one of my favorites. Definitely editorial/fashion in nature, the “feeling” is what I was going for in this capture.

The model’s almost huddled pose and the gritty urban environment create an atmosphere of loneliness, desperation, and resignation.

The ability to use the ultra-wide lens enhances the drama in the sheer effect of distortion and perspective.

Your eyes being drawn to the decayed sidewalk in the foreground and then leading up to the model and her wonderful pose and expression creates the story.

The final touch to this picture is the high contrast, desaturated finish I applied.  This enhances the drama and makes the picture take on an almost surreal appearance.  The high contrast also creates the contrasting sky elements from the white to the blue which adds more visual interest.

Ultra-wide Example 5

Lastly and probably my favorite ultra-wide portrait is this fashion/editorial swimsuit work.  This has all the elements I discussed above but with some real flare…literally!

Challenges for this shot were definitely due to the lighting situation and balancing the sun.  I had to use a studio mono-light at 3/4 power to balance the light.  The angle and the position has to be correct in order to not over balance the sun or insert light onto the subject making it look artificial.

As before, the low perspective is critical for these shots and the desire to get the sun in the frame made us have to be very wary of timing and the sun’s location.  Everything worked perfectly and with the lighting set-up in place I was able to capture my vision!

Visually we’re led to her foot and leg as it is in the foreground. Working up her perfect leg we get to the wonderful swimsuit and beautiful face and the icing on the cake is the amazing sun flare coming out of her left hand!

Again, my favorite ultra-wide portrait!

In summary, with the proper technique, ultra-wide portraits will create a tremendous amount of visual interest and really guide the viewer to where the photographer wants their eyes to go.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business?  Taylor Jordan: I really kind of fell into it on accident. My friends had mentioned something about me modeling a few times but never really acted on it. I started Googleing and doing research on the industry and came across the pictures of a local photographer. He agreed to help me start my portfolio, and we scheduled a TF shoot. It was only months later when people started asking me to help them with their portfolios!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals personally and with your modeling career?  Taylor Jordan: For right now I would really love to keep modeling just for fun. I consider it to be one of my hobbies. If it turns into something I could do for a living that would be great! However, for right now, I am perfectly happy just doing it for fun and making a little extra cash!

GlamModelz Magazine: Posing 101 any suggestions to newer models coming into the business? Taylor Jordan: Be true to yourself, and don’t lower your standards! Freelance modeling is a business. Don’t let anyone tell you how to run your own business.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts and issues with Implied and Nude posing? Taylor Jordan: I have no issues with nude models. It is not for everyone, and I respect any girl that is comfortable enough to pursue such a thing. I personally do not do nude photos because, I believe something’s should be left for my specials somebody’s eyes.

GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of Family, Friends and loved ones with your modeling? Taylor Jordan: I have had tons of support from my family and friends throughout this entire journey.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts on the whole escort issue? Taylor Jordan: I totally understand the escort issue. It is something you have to look at from multiple stand points. Having somebody on set during the shoot can definitely hinder the process. One important part of modeling is being able to let yourself go and try new things. That is really tough to do when your boyfriend or mother is standing on the other side of the camera. The other side of the issue is safety. It can be a little frightening to plan a photo shoot with a complete stranger and one of the first things he/she says is “no escorts.” In this day and age, it is easy to jump to conclusions. I would suggest meeting the photographer in a public place and spend some time getting to know each other. I use to always take a snapshot of my location on Google maps and send it to my boyfriend before I went inside the studio. Always take precautions, but don’t let it get in the way of an awesome shoot!

GlamModelz Magazine: What gets you motivated everyday to stay in shape and look your best at all times? Taylor Jordan: I don’t have a particular motive to stay in shape. It is more of an unconscious decision. Healthy eating and a little exercise everyday eventually becomes a way of life if you do it long enough. There is nothing better than the feeling you get after an awesome workout! The endorphins keep you coming back for more!

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle the inappropriate offers and sometimes rude individuals when they contact you for a session together? Taylor Jordan: I usually ignore the inappropriate emails or reply with a polite “no thank you, Have a nice day.”

GlamModelz Magazine: Your thoughts on TFP or TFCD sessions in general?  Taylor Jordan: TF shoots are great, as long as both the photographer and the model are getting something out of it. It wouldn’t make sense if someone gave me free pictures if I wasn’t improving their portfolio in some way. It is a great way to improve skills, and build portfolios.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions are a big part of a photo session, how and where did you learn this?? Taylor Jordan: It is something that takes a lot of practice. I still have a lot to learn in this area. you really have to know your face and what it does. I can look in the mirror all day long and get the perfect face, but when you’re standing in front of a camera, it is whole different story. Confidence is key!

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle rejection? From photographers, agencies and your piers? Taylor Jordan: Rejection is a huge part of this industry! I literally took rejection after rejection for two weeks until I booked my first TF shoot. It is something that you really can’t let get you down. I’m sure Tyra had just as many rejections as I did when she first started!

A lot of you have been asking about my runway work and how to approach the fashion world about shooting on their runways. I’m thrilled you like my Runway work and the girls will be too!  To be quite honest, the Runway was an accident, an optical illusion. I had a shoot I had hoped to rush through a couple of looks, so I setup two shots in advance.

I started off with a ¼” x 4’ x 8’ panel from the Home Depot. I laid it on the floor, overlapping the backdrop by approximately 2 feet and proceeding off the backdrop into the room.  I taped a 3’ wide piece of silver window insulation to the center of the white panel.  I had intended to use the ripple, reflective effect for an art shot and then remove it for my second look.

Once I was happy with the light, I showed my model the image on the cameras LCD. She went crazy, exclaiming it looked much better than any of her runway shots in her port. To add the final touch I moved the backdrop strobes in a bit, so that they would be included in the shot.

To enhance the elevated illusion, even more I added a graduate (black/clear) shadow effect to each side of my white panel board in Photoshop. That was the only photoshop required on this project.

The reflective window film has long sense worn out. Personally I was not as happy with it as I am the carpet remnant that I am using now. My next project will be to add white Christmas tree lights to both sides of the white panel board

There is nothing quite like the feeling of watching a lovely young lady walk out of the makeup/styling room and then reeling with delight when I bask in a true example of artistry performed on her by a consummate professional. Such is the case with Naomi Herron, my primary MUA/Stylist at my Worcester, MA studio. Between her knowledge of my general tastes, her unerring ability to sense the direction my shoot plan will be heading, her superb evaluative skills in assessing the needs of the client, as well as her charm, enthusiasm and aplomb, Naomi is not only one of the most important parts of my business, she makes each and every shoot at which she is present at a delight. I once asked her to create a work of art on Chrissy Scobi’s makeup so sublime that, “when she comes out of the back, I want my heart to shatter into a million tiny shards, never to be reassembled”. An army of Humpty Dumpties couldn’t mend the pulverizing my chest took when I saw a level of loveliness that has never been equaled.

GlamModelz Magazine: What first got you interested in the artistry of makeup and hair design?   Naomi: I have always had a passion since I was young for makeup and hair. Shopping as a little girl I loved visiting all the makeup counters. It has always fascinated me how makeup can transform a person.

GlamModelz Magazine: How long have you been working in the beauty industry?   Naomi: Fresh out of high school I went for my cosmetology license and was working in a salon right away. It has been 9 years now.

GlamModelz Magazine: You style both bridal and model looks and I’m sure each requires a very different approach. What differences have you noticed?   Naomi: I find I can be more creative and artistic when working with models, especially in runway. Brides seem to be more reserved and want a timeless look that they will not regret when showing their grandkids wedding photos. I have had a few brides with themed weddings which allows the hair and makeup to be more dramatic, that is always fun!

GlamModelz Magazine: You do both hair and makeup styling. Which would you say is your forte, or which do you prefer?   Naomi: This is always a hard decision for me to make. I have to say, I get really excited about makeup, there is nothing like starting off with a fresh face and making it look completely different. However without the right hairstyle, the makeup is no good.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for the beginner in the beauty design field?  Naomi: Always be willing to learn new techniques and new things. Even after 9 years, I’m still finding new tricks, and ways to improve my work. Also, network, network, network. The only way you’re going to get anywhere in this industry is by knowing the right people and making the right connections.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you see as the big trend for makeup or hair this year? Any guess what next year’s trends might be?  Naomi: Neutral and natural seems to be where the off camera trend is. Less is more in this case. Having perfectly flawless skin with a subtle eye and soft lip. However, with that said, I dislike keeping to rules and trends of makeup. Makeup is meant to be fun and creative; the sky should be the limit.

GlamModelz Magazine: What would be your dream gig if you got the chance to do it?  Naomi: I would LOVE to do a hair and/or makeup for a movie production. How cool would it be to see your work on the big screen!

GlamModelz Magazine: What was the most bizarre request for makeup artistry you’ve received so far?   Naomi: I always go back to one of the first modeling gigs I had. A peacock feather shoot. It contained everything from crazy exotic colorful makeup to attaching real peacock feathers onto this models hair and clothes.

GlamModelz Magazine: When you’re not making people beautiful, what can we find you doing?  Naomi: Taking care of my two kids, Ethan and Mia. Family and friends are very important to us, so whenever we get free time, we are usually all spending it together.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started!  Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?  Jeff: As a boy, I was handed a Polaroid camera and shot a picture that developed, in black and white, before my eyes.  I could not believe how cool that was and just wanted to keep shooting.  Over the years, I gradually learned what you could do with a more sophisticated camera and began shooting landscapes and flowers.  Then finally I moved into doing forensic photography as part of my law practice out of necessity because I couldn’t find a “for hire photographer” who could capture the moment I wanted for use in jury trials I was handling.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty?  What other genre’s and styles interest you? Jeff:  Outside of Glamour/Beauty, it would have to be landscape, floral, architectural and forensic photography.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry?  What would you change about it, if you could?  Jeff: The industry does not strike me as being very organized or structured.  Anyone can get into the industry but not everybody can make money in the business.

I have met many talented and accomplished photographers who have not had the right contacts or opportunities to develop the economic side of the photography business.  This leads a lot of people in the direction of the more mundane world of what I would call the “face shot” side of the photography industry.

Just like in every industry, there will always be a big demand for high quality work product and talented photographers, but matching the service providers with the people seeking the services is the marketing conundrum.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?  Jeff: I guess I would have to say that I am a minimalist at heart.  It’s great to have an expensive camera, lens, lighting options and a studio, but I can capture a “best shot” with a basic camera outdoors or basic camera and two soft light boxes indoors.  I just have to make certain that the basic camera will allow me to do the my manual settings.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Jeff: My view here is pretty simple.  Paying for a shoot makes sense to me when there is a model, well known or not, whom I want to shoot or there is some other special or unique circumstance that merits a “pay for” shooting.  TF on the other hand for me is limited to a model that I want to add to my portfolio or an up and coming model that needs to create a portfolio to get to the next level.  I do both, but it’s more the exception than what is normal since neither one contributes to the bottom line.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer?  Jeff: My inspirations come from many sources and directions.  For example, how could anyone not be inspired by the quality and the beauty of the National Geographic’s outdoor photography, or the lighting techniques of the Playboy photographers, capturing the moment in a sporting event and editorial photography of the war zone photographers?

I am constantly impressed and inspired by the color and beauty of flowers, mountain vistas, sunsets, forensic scenes and the uniqueness and complexity of architectural creations and settings.

I admire and am inspired by Ansel Adams and the musician Bryan Adams (who are not related although they share the same last name).  Bryan has managed to successfully continue with his musical career while at the same time becoming an outstanding photographer who has garnered international recognition.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography?  Other goals?   Jeff: My goals are simple, I want to continue to improve on the quality, clarity, content and the story line that my images create.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should  Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?   Jeff: Whether you are a Model, MUA or Stylist you must be on time, be prompt, be fully involved, be prepared, be inspired, be enthusiastic, be open to learning, and be brave enough to step outside of your normal comfort zones.  When these things happen, something magical will take place in front of the lens and on the digital disk.   Anyone can take a picture, but I want to a capture a moment, an emotion, a color and a wow factor.  It takes a team effort.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?   Jeff: With today’s ever improving digital cameras, anyone can take a pretty good picture automatically.  The really famous and recognized photographers are not interested in taking pretty good pictures.  The only way to accomplish taking great pictures that ooze with emotion, sparkle with stunning lighting, pop with brilliant color, and amaze with texture, clarity and details, is to study, understand and master the manual functionality of your camera, to understand the science and placement of lighting, and to interact with the model to draw out the emotion, mood and look you desire.  Most importantly, don’t be hesitant to experiment with different techniques because the use of different methods of photography will enhance your overall understanding and improvement.  Finally, don’t settle for run of the mill pretty good pictures.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.   Jeff: I am not sure I can really identify a biggest accomplishment or proudest moment as a photographer.  Like most photographers, I have had the picture of the day recognition, showcase images, pictures published, hired for cool projects, and had people and companies buy or license my images. Each of these experiences is joyful.  I am happiest when someone takes the time to say or point out that one of my images really left them with a particular reaction, feeling, emotion or a sense of artistry or creativity.

 GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Jeff: Don’t leave it to someone else when it comes to your looks, hair, make-up, and wardrobe.

Every image that is taken of you has the potential to negatively or positively influence how you appear and are perceived and recognized publicly for years to come.  So make sure you always look your best and the way you want to be depicted in the project you are hired for and in the images that will be taken of you.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?   Jeff: I have really jumped with both feet into cooking and thoroughly enjoy the creativity and complexity of it.  I did zero cooking growing up, and then did my share of over cooking on the grill and had little to no understanding of the concepts.  With a little effort and a few lessons, I can knock out anything from a quality tiramisu to a wild game feast.  I really regret now not paying more attention to all of the things my mother and grandmother knew and could have taught me about cooking.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?   Jeff: I spend the majority of my time working in my very active trial law practice in Texas; which means I don’t get to spend as much time in shooting as I would like to do. And I guess the other interesting fact would be that I did my first glamour shoot in June of 2008.

 GlamModelz Magazine: Where can we see more of your work?  How can models who wish to shoot with you contact you? The above mentioned camera gives very high quality images to photographers and clear images is what people in this career look for. If an image is not clear then one does not have a good image. This camera contains an effective pixel count of 36.3-million pixels (twice as much pixels than the Nikon D4). Experts and even professionals that have used this camera have stated that this is the lightest and fully framed camera that Nikon has ever made before.

When a human face is detected in the frame, 3D Color Matrix Metering III bases exposure control on the brightness of that face so that the face is optimally exposed even with backlighting. In addition, the superior resolution of the metering sensor, that makes full use of an incredible 91,000 pixels, enables extremely precise analysis of the scene for more accurate control over autofocusing, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control, and also auto white balance.

This amazing camera has not let down any of its users and if a professional photographer is considering of upgrading their version of a camera then this camera has been highly recommended.

The examples I had were all through the Golden Age of Hollywood reaching into the 1940′s.

That type of glamour photography still exists today.  What happened during the evolution of the genre is more styles of glamour were added. The new styles still had the same goals in mind, creating visual representations that are alluring and attractive.

First Issue of Playboy, 1953

The emergence of the next significant style that contributes to the Glamour genre happened in the 1950′s.  Anyone have a guess? That’s right…Playboy Magazine.

Hugh Hefner, when he worked for Esquire Magazine, had a vision for a men’s magazine that he wanted to call “Stag Party”.  After finding investors and changing the name due to a potential trademark lawsuit from “Stag Magazine”, Playboy was born.

The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe.  Originally the centerfold picture was for a calendar but was used instead for the now famous centerfold.

The Glamour Nude style of glamour photography was born.  This significant milestone set the standard as to what we know as Glamour Nude photography today. A kind of Girl-Next-Door innocence with a hint of naughtiness.

What’s terrific is that still holds true to this day.

The next significant glamour style to emerge happened in 1965. Anyone?  Anyone? Yes, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

This was the brainchild of SI Editor Andre Leguerre to fill the winter months when sports were typically slow.  Remember this was 1965!

This brought an entirely new style of glamour to the table.  It also brought sexy, scantily clad women into a mainstream medium that wasn’t considered “adult” material.  What might be considered “taboo” in Playboy, Sports Illustrated had essentially the same allure without the nudity.

Fantastic concept!  We all know how huge this has become today with celebrity athletes such as Steffi Graf, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and tons more posing for this issue as well.

The next really significant style that Glamour Photography has become known for is fashion related.  Any guesses? Yep, Victoria’s Secret.

Victoria’s Secret was started in 1977 in San Francisco, CA by Roy Raymond.  He started it because he felt uncomfortable buying lingerie for his wife from big department stores.  His goal was to provide an environment comfortable for men to purchase lingerie.

We all know how huge Victoria’s Secret has become today. It also infused into Glamour Photography the lingerie style that we all identify with.  When I photograph lingerie, the Victoria’s Secret style is the context that I think of.

My Glamour timeline ends with modern Men’s magazines.  The two most identified and iconic being FHM and Maxim.

Both of these Men’s Lifestyle Magazines are U.K.-originated but have versions in the U.S. and a multitude of countries worldwide. These are significant because they not only bring celebrities such as Christa Miller seen on Maxim’s premier cover in 1995 but they also give access to non-celebrity women a nationwide publication.  They do that through contests such as Maxim’s Hometown Hotties.  I have done many photo shoots for young ladies with aspirations of being a Hometown Hottie.

Maxim and FHM both do not have nudity although the women are most often scantily clad.  They have become so much a part of our popular culture that the type of photography you see in them have taken on the names  ”Maxim-like” or “FHM-like” pictures.

So with that brief history in mind, take a look around this site and I’m sure you’ll easily see hints of all the styles I discussed.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business Kayla Marie, and what goals have your set for your self?  Kayla Marie: A photographer named Gabe Calder found me on Facebook and asked me to shoot. My second shoot was at Light Works Studio. Mike Misialek asked me to attend one of the Friday Night events Rick Trottier use to organize. It was there that I met Rick. I have worked with a lot of photographers since then including Mike and Gabe, but Rick and I have worked together steadily since that Friday night more than two years ago. As for goals, it’s simple; I want to be famous, hahaha!! If I can reach that height, that would be great. Over the past 6 months I’ve had some good opportunities. I was in a beautiful calendar with a naughty name. It is the 2012 Dirty Girl calendar, and I loved being Miss November and being a part of that fine project. I also just recently had a 10 page spread in Men’s Fitness magazine on-line. These are the kinds of opportunities that are getting me closer to my dreams.

GlamModelz Magazine: When working on concepts for upcoming shoots, how much thought or effort do you put into it? Where does your inspiration come from?  Kayla Marie: Except for one photographer, I generally like to be spontaneous about most shoots. If it is a commercial shoot like for a t-shirt company, I know what to expect, but if it is a portfolio development shoot, I am pretty low key about preparing. I like to go with the flow as much as possible. In the case of my work with Rick Trottier, we plan very carefully. Rick likes me to give him a sense of the outfit, concept or theme. Then he will come up with the poses, lighting, backgrounds and other parts that make the image great. I like that he and I put a lot of thought into our work. In the end, enjoying the experience and having some fun is a large part of what makes modeling worthwhile.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you had one thing to tell a model just entering the industry what would that be? Kayla Marie: It takes a lot of hard work to be successful as a model. You have to practice and take care of yourself. Practicing means working on your poses and facial expressions. That doesn’t just happen it takes time and effort to be good at both things. Some models may have some natural talent, but all of us have to develop our talents. Just as important as the outside is your inside. You have to have goals and really shoot for the stars. You also have to not lose touch with the real you. Don’t let success go your head and change the person you’ve always been. Learning to have real confidence in your skills and your beauty, believing in yourself and letting that shine through separates great models from good or average models.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us the funniest story that has personally happened to you on a runway or photoshoot: Kayla Marie: Chrissy Scobi and I were at a beach shoot with Rick at Plum Island. We were running around topless after doing some implieds when we noticed a random fisherman just checking us out. Then he started trying to talk to us. It was pretty awkward, but also really funny. Here he was expecting to catch a few fish, but an instead got an eyeful of a couple of naked girls running around the beach.

GlamModelz Magazine: When reviewing photographers online portfolio’s, what grabs your attention? What type of images gets you in the mood to shoot with them? Kayla Marie: I am most impressed with a photographer who is diverse and has mastered a lot of styles. I also like to see that photographers have a strong grasp of lighting and editing. I want to look my best. If their lighting isn’t impressive or they don’t seem to know how to edit, I know the pictures won’t take my portfolio in a direction that I want. That is what inspires me about a photographer. I want them to be able to give me something I might be missing.

GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of family, friends and significant other in regards to your decisions for your modeling career to date? How do you handle negative feelings from those intimidated with your success? Kayla Marie: Overall, my friends have been very supportive and they encourage me to try new things and push myself. That helps a lot to have that caring at your back. My family hasn’t been as consistently supportive of my modeling efforts. That isn’t always easy as you want your family to back you at all times. As for dealing with negative comments, I just try to laugh them off and remember that jealousy is as ugly a trait as there is. It was pretty amazing to me to see how quickly people’s attitudes seemed to change the minute I went from just being “Kayla” to “a model”. I didn’t change, but their perceptions of me sure did. I just try to remind myself that small-minded behavior isn’t something I want to be connected to.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions and body langue are sometimes the hardest part of a successful photo session, how and where did you learn this and do you have any special routines or rituals you go through when you are preparing for a photoshoot??  Kayla Marie: As I had mentioned before, practice is really key to modeling success. Facial expressions take twice the amount of work that posing does. What also helps is really learning to take direction from photographers and then committing to memory all that you learn. Every photographer is different and you can learn a lot from most. However, not all photographers give direction. Without direction, I really don’t know if I am really hitting things right and I don’t learn as much. As for rituals, I really don’t have any. I just like to go to the shoot, be friendly and professional, business-like and work hard.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any hobbies or special interests that you feel contribute to your success in modeling and why do you feel they are a contributing to achieve your goals? Kayla Marie: I have always been obsessed with fashion; whether it’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, hair or accessories. My love of fashion is one of the things that helps me be a successful model. I try to bring individuality to shoots as well as creativity. I like my outfits to be a reflection of my tastes and be fun, flirty, cute, sexy and stylish. I don’t want to be known as a model who can only do one look, or only has one style. I like to be good at as many different looks as possible. I also use to be a go-go dancer, and that kept me fit. Now, although my exercise regimen is a little less intense, I have gotten excited about better choices when it comes to healthy eating. I’m thinking about the future a lot and how to still be a healthy person as I get older.

GlamModelz Magazine: We all know the expression “grin and bare it” originated on the runway. What was your most embarrassing moment and how did you over come your misfortune?  Kayla Marie: At an April 2010 Fashion Shoot at Rick’s studio, the designer had some pretty interesting clothes, BUT there were some swimwear styles just were not flattering on my rather slender figure. I felt pretty uncomfortable so I really had to grit my teeth and “bare it”. In this industry, you don’t always get 100% control over outfits, concepts and themes, and you have to just hope that the end product looks good. Fortunately, that was the case this time.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any thoughts or advice you would like to pass along to photographers? In you mind what makes a spectacular shot?   Kayla Marie: Just as models have to study a photographer to know she wants to work with him, photographers should really get a sense of the strengths of a model and play to those strengths. Whether it is a question of her eyes, figure, hair, skin tone or whatever makes her beautiful, a model wants to look her best and the photographer has to really see the model inside and out by studying her pictures and getting a clear idea of what will work and what won’t. I’ve been asked to put on some pretty awful outfits, accessories and use some foolish props. I know I didn’t look my best in the pose and expression because I just didn’t feel very good. One of the reasons Rick and I work well together is he wants me to provide the general starting concept. From there, he refines it and is turns out to be a pretty happy bit of teamwork.

GlamModelz Magazine: Which website do you feel is best for getting your name out there? Where to you receive the most response? Which site(s) do you feel are the worst and why?   Kayla Marie: Despite its weaknesses, Facebook tends to be a better place to meet photographers and network with other industry people. Folk seem to be a bit more real, you can really look inside their lives and get a slightly better idea of who they are. There seem to be a few less creeps on FB as opposed to some of the other sites. Sadly, there are always jerks and creeps out there. One of the life skills a model learns is to be better at screening those wastes of time. The other life skill is to have a photographer or 3 that you trust to help you make some good decisions, just as if they are smart, they listen to your views on subjects about this industry. That kind of give and take is how great partnerships are made.

Introduction – My greatest Photographic Passion is beach imagery, and since that season is rather short here in New England, I make it a moral imperative to be outside at all costs from June through September, earlier and/or later if possible. That allows me to focus the poor weather months on other loves, one of them being motorcycle photography. Since poor weather in New England forces us indoors, doing the “bike shot” correctly in the studio requires asking all the why, how, what questions.

Step 1 – Purpose

Ask yourself the question, who is this image being created for and/or how will it be used? If your client is going to use it for strictly advertising purposes with a great deal of added graphic design, this means the model and the bike will likely need to be shot on a pure white background. As a result, the attire of the model, her skin tone and hair color and the method of lighting must all be coordinated in such a manner that bike and model can be easily extracted from the background so that graphic manipulation is made simpler. As long as the lighting highlights all the best features of the bike (engine parts, chrome and modifications, paint job and other exciting characteristics) and creates a degree of depth on the model’s face and figure and still leaves crisp lines and clarity, the problem is solved. As long as the lighting is not overexposed or horrifically underexposed and there are no immense differences in balance, intensifying all the best elements of the shot in the editing process is fairly simple.

If the image is being created for the artistic interests of the bike owner, for a model’s portfolio or for commercial purposes that call for a greater degree of creative license, now the questions of how the bike and model should be shot become far more complicated. That is where evaluation, drawing conclusions and executing plans become essential to “getting the shot”.

Step 2 – Composition

The premise seems fairly simple, even obvious, but this isn’t always the case to the initiated. The motorcycle must be pre-eminent in the image.  That means that background and model need to be subordinate, even if the image is bound for a model’s portfolio. The shot must still be done right and conform to some of the “rules” of composition. People will say, “why are there such rules?” Maybe there don’t have to be, but the reality of the industry is that photography must combine artistic merit AND commercial potential, otherwise it is “just art” and may not have useful qualities for clients. Returning to compositional thinking, just as earrings are an accessory to a lovely face, the model and the background are accessories to the bike and must enhance its beauty/compelling design and not detract from it. As such, the simpler the starting background, the better. The model can be in front of the bike, astride or on top of it, even lying in front of it, but her presence must complement the vehicle in every way possible.

Step 3 – Background Coordination/Wardrobe

It is my personal belief that the initial background should be black or so dark that details recede from general recognition. The human eye is drawn to anomaly and if there are distracting influences in the background, they will draw the eye away from the bike and the model. Backgrounds like brick, sheet metal, fencing, concrete, or even wood SEEM safe, but repetitive textures can call away the eye with their “movement”, while dull or uninteresting backgrounds hamper the “mood” of your piece. Atmosphere is essential in an artistic bike shot. As such, the black or very dark background is the canvas on which “paint” can be applied. From there I may add fog which will take color accent light very well and augment the background in such a way to draw the eye to exciting points of the bike or highlight the model in some fashion. The black or dark background allows for complementary colors to be introduced which can create accord with the primary paint colors of the bike, producing a harmonious composition between motorcycle and background.

The model must be properly attired, assuming that the image is not a full implied or a nude. It goes without saying that the colors of the attire must balance the hue(s) of the bike. From there, the choice of wardrobe depends on the style of the bike, its age and general design and the figure of the model. A classier and sleeker motorcycle may lend itself to a dress.  A more eclectic bike might call for more creative attire like country attire or active wear.  Edgier bikes will probably inspire the classic choices of leathers, lingerie or swimwear. Into all of these choices come the nature of the model’s build and what kinds of clothes look best on her. Choosing the right model and the right attire require even more thought than the background. A mistake at this point can be fatal to the happy outcome sought, so careful and honest appraisal of the model’s strengths and weaknesses is crucial.

Step 4 – Primary Lighting

The Bike Must Be Lit Properly. Having made that point clear, if the model is a blob of shadow, you’ve got a debacle of epic proportions on your hands. When planning the bike shot, I tend to reserve my tallest gridded strip box with strobe for the model. Positioned appropriately for angle and distance and powered to the right intensity, it will do the job admirably of lighting the model and the residual illumination from the other lights will produce the desired results.  The model light will also create residual light for the bike as well, helping solve more than one problem. I often use a smaller gridded strip box for the front of the bike and a gridded beauty dish for the back of the bike. The small strip box can do some rim lighting on the model and will highlight but not over light the usually more slender design/construction of the front. The beauty dish is focused on the exhaust, engine, back tire and other “heftier” components that only the power of a beauty dish can solve. People often ask “why gridded lights?” The answer is simple, I want to cut down on “spill” and preserve the darkness in the background where my “canvas” needs to be maintained so that it can receive “the paint”.

Step 5 – Accent lighting

As was mentioned earlier, “mood” is an essential element in an artistic motorcycle shot. Bikes conjure up impressions of mystery, strength, danger and excitement in our psyches. Those concepts need to be enhanced by the photographic image and not dispelled by dissolute and mundane depictions. The primary lighting allows us to “see” the bike and the model and thrill to all the mechanical or feminine details. It is the accent lighting that establishes mood. I tend to use two accent lights. The more important of the two lights often serves two purposes. The hair light does just what its name suggests; it highlights the hair of the model and separates it from the background. If I am not using fog in a shot, that gridded conical reflector hair light can also produce enough residual illumination to pick up some details on the bike depending on how and where the model is posed. If I am using fog, the white light of the hair light, bending through the “white” fog will pick up blue tint in that fog that I can manipulate in photoshop to do my bidding to create some dramatic effects. Almost always, blue is a complementary or contrasting color with the primary color of MOST motorcycles, and thankfully blue looks wonderful as a highlight to the hair of a blond or brunette. And since you are not using a gel light (only “white light”), no discoloration of the model or the main frame of the bike will occur.

The second accent light is often a gel light set off to one side of the cycle, most commonly the front of the bike since there is less mass to affect with colored highlights. Some rim lighting of the bike and even the model is likely to occur and this can and often is of benefit.  By carefully adjusting the angle, distance and intensity of the gel light, “atmosphere” is introduced but you do not overwhelm the primary and secondary subjects. Playing with what gel color works best is probably the part of this endeavor that can be the most finicky. It should be in accord with the colors of the bike and work with the “blue” you are introducing with the hair light system mentioned before. Keep in mind that the human eye is easily bewildered by a multitude of color and such confusion leads to compositional collapse due to simple “overstimulation”.

Step 6 – Model Pose

All art depends on carefully arranging lines. Structure is the nature of the physical universe and the basis of structure is geometric principles. As a result, the vast majority of model poses, whether they are standing, lying, kneeling, sitting or any variation of the afore-mentioned must create parallel or intersecting lines with your motorcycle. Whether arranged at a slight angle or at broadsides to the camera, a bike will be oriented horizontally. As such, the model’s pose should then either complement the bike’s arrangement with parallel lines, or contrast by creating intersecting lines. The pose can be dynamic, and often times that dynamism will do much to create energetic lines that flow with the design of the bike. At all times, it must be recalled that the model is the accessory to the bike and her pose must not be distracting. Rather, the construction of the bike should lend itself to some very obvious methods of “positioning” or “draping” the model in, around or on the cycle. It might also be a good idea to know whether the bike owner wants the model to touch the bike, how expensive the metals or paint is so that if she does and scratches are left, what the in emotional cost will be.

In conclusion, a bike shoot can be a lot of fun. It can be exciting and exhilarating. Most models LOVE motorcycles, and if you are able to arrange a killer ride for them, you’ve just created a bond that may be life-long. If you bring that “monster shot” to your client, that image will last beyond the margins of your life and will go down as an example of artistry imperishable. That is what I seek each and every time I wheel a beauty into my studio.

Glamour photography is a very broad photographic genre.  Often times “Glamour” gets a negative or sleazy connotation attached to it but Glamour Photography is far from that.

Unfortunately because it encompasses a fairly broad range of styles, Glamour can be the “bucket” that some sleazy or questionable styles get dropped into.  Let’s look at the word Glamour.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Glamour as:

“an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness<the glamour of Hollywood>; especially: alluring or fascinating attraction —often used attributively <glamourstock> <glamour girls>”

So by definition, Glamour isn’t sleazy at all.  Glamour is simply wanting to visually create an allure or attractiveness.  Many types of photography accomplish this task without being bawdy, cheap or sleazy.

The History of Glamour Photgraphy.

In the 1920′s Ruth Harriet Louise, Chief Portrait Photographer at MGM studios, started photographing Hollywood Stars with the goal of making them appear bigger than life or glamourous.  This style was to help create the alluring, almost mythological image of the Stars.

The example to the right shows a classic Hollywood glamour portrait promoting the motion picture “The Temptress” with Greta Garbo.

Part of the promotion for the films were to have these types of glamour portraits taken to create the allure of the star, character, and motion picture.

Veronica Lake by George Hurrell

Another great example of classic Hollywood Glamour Photography is this portrait by George Hurrell of Veronica Lake.

First, I think Veronica Lake was without question one of the most beautiful women EVER!  Second, George Hurrell helped create the Hollywood glamour image we recognize today.

The dramatic Paramount style light with the wonderful hair light are classic identifiers to the Hollywood Glamour look.

George Hurrell was a master at this kind of photography.

Humphrey Bogart by George Hurrell

Glamour photography was not exclusive to women of that era. Here’s a George Hurrell portrait of my favorite actor of that time Humphrey Bogart.  Notice the fantastic lighting technique and the control of Chiaroscuro.  Fantastic portrait!

The idea of glamour photography was simply to create an image and attractiveness to Hollywood stars.

That same goal is evident today when you see promotional materials for movies although the medium may include still portraits, video movie trailers, or social media such as Facebook or MySpace.

I just wanted to dispel any misconceptions that “Glamour” as a genre means something sleazy, bawdy or inappropriate.

My "Film Noir" Style Capture

This last picture is mine.  I wanted to capture a kind of “film noir” look with some bold lighting from the model’s back (kind of old fashioned big flash bulb look) with the atmosphere lending a kind of haziness to the scene.  Clearly a glamour shot yet thematic in the context of a modern depiction of the old film noir style.

To emphasize, glamour in it’s origin was not meant to be anything other than making a visual representation more appealing, alluring and attractive.

I will follow-up with more discussions on glamour photography and further define the genre.  As I said at the beginning of this post, “Glamour” is huge catch-all genre that really needs to be sub-categorized in order to make some sense.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business Chrissy Victoria, and what goals have your set for your self?  Chrissy Victoria: I have always been interested in the modeling and photography industry. I was the girl that collected swimwear magazines and Victoria’s Secret catalogs and would scour through them for hours, but I had never even considered the idea of getting involved myself. That is until one day I was working at a sandwich restaurant in my hometown when I was 17 years old. This small group of people that worked for our local TV station would come in every Friday to eat and have their weekly meeting, and in that group was Rick Trottier. I recognized Rick from my much younger years as my fifth grade teacher, and I was like “Hi how have you been!” And he just looked perplexed. I had to re-introduce myself; I had grown up so much since then that he had no idea who I was! In elementary school I was the timid glasses and braces type with a short haircut, and as the years went by I’d grown my hair out very long, gotten contacts, and taken a liking to wearing makeup. The next day Rick came back in with a letter for me proposing that I do a photoshoot for the promotional tee shirts for his TV station, and of course I jumped at the opportunity. I loved every second of that first shoot, and the rest is history! I am so passionate about modeling and I’m so lucky to get to work with the amazing people I do, and my goals remain to keep improving my technique and be happy and comfortable with myself no matter what.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals personally and with your modeling career?  Chrissy Victoria: I want to remain true to myself above all, but I truly hope that my positive attitude and hard work are noticed and take me far so that I can be a role model to other people who want to follow the same path. Modeling is an outlet for me to escape from the daily grind of school and work; I’m immediately relaxed and bubblier than ever as soon as I set foot in the studio and I want that passion to show in every image!

GlamModelz Magazine: When working on concepts for upcoming shoots, how much thought or effort do you put into it? Where does your inspiration come from?  Chrissy Victoria: When I have a shoot coming up its on my mind all day. I’ll find myself dreaming up creative poses and thinking of ways to make the concept even more intriguing while I’m running errands or when I wake up and I’m getting ready for the day. Then as soon as I have a spare minute I’m practicing them in the mirror, haha! My greatest inspiration for all this practice has always been the Victoria’s Secret models. I still have most of the catalogs that I used to collect, and I have the last couple Annual Fashion Shows recorded. They are always so happy and wholesome in their interviews, they never look like they’re faking their happiness and they’re totally genuine in the love for what they do. But then they get on the runway or in front of the camera for catalog work and each model has a variety of looks from fierce and sexy to relaxed, kicked back, and dreamy. I think the ability to switch up your looks and expressions as a model is one of the most valuable talents you can have; modeling is an art!

GlamModelz Magazine: What would you like to see change in the industry from a model’s standpoint? Chrissy Victoria: One of the most well-known issues I’ve heard about with the industry is one that I also stand against fully: the “standard” body image that is often created. Not every woman is built 5’11” with a slight pear shape and muscles cut out of stone. I, personally, am NOT that woman that can eat whatever she wants but never gain more than an extra pound or two; I work very hard for the physique I have. The general message many people seem to get from the industry is that you are supposed to be thin. For me it’s not at all about being thin, it’s about being healthy.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any thoughts or suggestions to models about wardrobe?  Such as what to have and where to find deals? Chrissy Victoria: In regards to a general day-to-day wardrobe the best suggestion I can make is to stock up on the basics and accessories! Beauty does not have to be pain, or expensive for that matter. One of my favorite outfits to wear on campus is a pair of black leggings with casual black heeled boots and layered flowy tops or sweaters with a bright or patterned scarf. What’s nice about those basic is the boots can be paired with jeans and a pretty tank top to go out. I find these basics at bargain stores like TJ Maxx or Forever 21; I could spend hours in there! I have to function on a college budget so I usually don’t make expensive purchases, but if I find a basic versatile piece with nice embellishments or neat fabric or fit I find its almost always worth it to make the one splurge

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you feel that flexibility and diversity are important to a model’s portfolio? Chrissy Victoria: Absolutely. Going back to part of my previous answer about how I get my inspiration, I place huge value on the ability to put on any emotion or persona. As I also mentioned, modeling is an art. Those models who can provide any attitude that any concept or context may call for are the ones who are going to stand out. Having said that, I also think it’s great for a model to have a “specialty”, or a signature look that she or he is great at. But it is that in combination with the skill of versatility that makes a model great instead of just good.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you had one thing to tell a model just entering the industry what would that be? Chrissy Victoria: The age old practice, practice, practice. You may feel silly making faces in the mirror, but that’s the kind of thing that helps you get to know your own facial expressions and your own body angles. The mirror shows you what your photographer will see from behind the lens.

GlamModelz Magazine: due to the current state of the economy in the U.S. have you noticed any major changes in the industry within your geographical area? Chrissy Victoria: I’ve noticed the industry has definitely slowed down. I often model in  more concentrated areas in Worcester and Boston, MA and that keeps me near some of the hearts of the industry, but in general I feel like the true hype is suppressed because of the hard times. But I see it as an opportunity to better myself and prepare for the climb back up!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us the funniest story that has personally happened to you on a runway or photoshoot: Chrissy Victoria: In one of my shoots at Light Works Studio Rick Trottier and I did a set in which I had to wear these sky-high stilettos. I had shot in them a few times before so by now I was strutting about in them like a champ. We had another model on the shoot with us that day and she had to wear the heels too, and she was wondering how in the world she was supposed to walk in them. Rick was telling her that I was a true veteran of the heels and he was like “watch her walk around in them to get an idea of the technique”. Of course the second I walked around the corner I felt my ankle give out from under me. I had broken an ankle a few years before and I was thinking “no WAY is that happening” as I started to go down, so I threw myself backwards and landed straight on my butt, legs out in front of me. How ironic…

GlamModelz Magazine:  The Modeling reality TV shows have created quite an interest in modeling these days. Can you offer any advice for those interested in getting their big brake? Any Tips for models wishing to do it sooner rather then later? Chrissy Victoria:  You have to be committed. That doesn’t mean you have to just want it badly enough, it means you have to be willing to spend time working out, and take whole weekends off to shoot and gain experience. You also have to be a people person! That is what the industry is all about, especially the reality shows, so one of the best things you can do is have a positive attitude; it shows that you’re happy to be doing what you’re doing and it creates a great environment. You also must be patient. Big brakes don’t happen overnight, you have to work hard and prove yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: I have noticed you spend a great deal of time maintaining your portfolio on ModelMayhem. Do you feel this is an important factor to your success as a model? Chrissy Victoria:  Absolutely, maintaining all of your portfolios and online blogs are important factors to success: it shows that you’re dedicated and, more importantly, you’re promoting yourself. You’re able to showcase your strongest images, post updates and accomplishments, and interact with people! Model Mayhem and Facebook are some of your best tools

GlamModelz Magazine: Chrissy Victoria:, your on-line portfolio is quite stunning and exhibits innovative styling; every single photograph is a work of art.  Do you plan the shots that you are adding to your portfolio or just shoot what ever you’re feeling at the time? Chrissy Victoria:  I love that you just said all if my photographs are works of art haha! I always think of modeling as an art, so sometimes I plan the shots that I want to add to my portfolio and other times its just what I’m feeling at the time. Oftentimes Rick and I will go through my portfolio and think about what kinds of things would make this portfolio as complete and diverse as possible. But what usually happens is I’ll come up with a new concept and be thinking, “I NEED that for my portfolio!” So I guess you say it’s a little bit of both!

GlamModelz Magazine: When reviewing photographers online portfolio’s, what grabs your attention? What type of images gets you in the mood to shoot with them? Chrissy Victoria:  When I see beautiful or creative lighting its sparks my curiosity immediately. It shows that a photographer can take photos in a wide variety of places, and I also think that the lighting of a photo can make or break it. There could be a talented model doing a great pose in the pool of a waterfall in the woods, but if the lighting is washed out and dull it doesn’t do any justice to the subjects of the photo. On the other hand, if you caught the sunlight reflecting off the water onto your model and the beams of light coming through the trees, now that’s a beautiful thing!

GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of family, friends and significant other in regards to your decisions for your modeling career to date? How do you handle negative feelings from those intimidated with your success? Chrissy Victoria:  When I first started modeling I got a lot of negative feedback from my peers. I live in a really small, rural town and nobody around there had ever done anything like this, so it surprised a lot of people, I think. It’s not a good feeling to have people judge you negatively and say bad things about you, but I liked what I was doing so there really was no choice but to ignore it. Eventually it died down and as time has gone by people have started to really support me and I’m very grateful for it. One of the things that made it easier to get through the hard parts was the support of my parents. Of course at first they were worried, but since it’s become such an important part of my life they’ve been really great about it. My mom is always commenting on my new pictures, it’s something that really makes me happy because family is important.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions and body language are sometimes the hardest part of a successful photo session, how and where did you learn this and do you have any special routines or rituals you go through when you are preparing for a photoshoot??  Chrissy Victoria: Practice! I find inspiration in successful models like in Sports Illustrated Swimwear or Maxim Magazine, and I’ll strive to replicate their poses or facial expressions. What has always helped is to shoot whatever look I’d been practicing and then get feedback from my photographer. He would show me the last few frames we’d shot and if it wasn’t what I was trying for I’d tweak it until we got it right. To prepare I take my time getting ready, it’s a very zen like thing for me!

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started!  Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?  Loris: I started photography quit by accident.  I was at a photography workshop accompanying  my wife, who is a model (Larisa  Romanova). Shortly thereafter I was immediately published in a magazine that was glamorous American cars and motorcycles, from there I realized that this was the my new path to follow and intensify. In the beginning I have only the model wife and I have honed my skills with her, then move on to  different models. And the addiction to photography began!

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour ?  What other genre’s and styles interest you? Loris: My preferred genre is the glamour because it represents my inner emotions it fills up and sets the adrenalin in motion. I also admire to the beauty of the nude form, but I also have a deep love fashion and I adore portraiture. I have a special predisposition for the style of glamour calendars.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer?  Loris: My main inspiration is Italian photographer Settimio Benedusi, He taught me to use natural lighting by watching him work.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry?  What would you change about it, if you could?  Loris: My greater challenge is without a doubt is my presentation and worth of the general public.  Just like all the artists I would want to leave my mark in the time with great works of  Art.  I would change this prospective of art within Italy, if I could, but I am afraid that is not possible. There is an ever increase number of talented artists here, but the field does not ear the respect as in America, or other nations in which the talent it is valued. I would not hesitate to go to the USA.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?  Loris: The essential one is the secret of a good location. I adores the photos in outside, the simplicity and the natural light creates from always the best images. My eye, of course, the brush I use is: Canon 5D mark II and my trusted 50 millimeter lens. I in some cases the aid of my external flash as fill light. Light is your friend in photography!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography?  Other goals?   Loris: My primary object is being published on important better magazine if with a beautiful Glamour Nudes, Calendars and Glamour, and my lifetime goal would be to publish a book of my own works, that tells my vision of history in the beauty of the female form and glamour.

GlamModelz Magazine: Which qualities would have models/Mua ‘ s/Designers, etc to work with you? Loris: Generally if I must make what I feel truly, appeals to me to represent the simplicity and the  atmosphere of the model, with makes up much light therefore, I leave  her much naturally.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?   Loris: – Try to represent what you have in mind without thinking too costly. Minor equipment and various lights, Your eyes and vision are the most important part of every glamour photographer.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.   Loris:  My work in general, what I do makes me proud every time, every shot.  I only choose to shoot what personally moves me and makes me happy at times. I know I have succeeded at my job, creating beautiful art when tears of emotion run down my face, do not hide the joy!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Loris: Glamour is a wonderful world of gestures, natural and spontaneous, so if you are sensuality, so let your sexy inner-self go naturally and everything will be seen beautifully in the finished photos.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?   Loris: : – I have been a great disc jockey, I am a personal trainer and a interior designer, specializing in houses.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started!  Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?  Rick

 GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Fashion/Beauty?  What other genre’s and styles interest you? Rick: I have always believed women to be the most engaging and mesmeric work of art in creation. The stunning loveliness of a woman’s eyes, the incredible allure of their hair and the uniquely beautiful planes and curves of a woman’s figure are nowhere to be seen in any other place on the face of the Earth. Rivers and mountains all seem to flow together into imagery that becomes redundant. But the myriad beauty of women and the individuality of how their physical features are fused with their personalities make glamor and fashion incredibly rewarding. While those two genres of photography are my primary loves, I do enjoy true conceptual and experimental art, but sadly there aren’t many opportunities to engage in it due to time constraints. I have been enjoying doing greater amounts of maternity shoots, some with just the mother, or both parents or even family portraiture. There are wonderful challenges to making those moments memorable and I enjoy that chance to create something special.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry?  What would you change about it, if you could?  Rick: Sadly the industry faces two distinct threats. One is the glut of people calling themselves “photographers”. You don’t have to have a degree to be a photographer, but you do have to put in Herculean efforts to learning the craft and all its components. So many “photographers” exist now, who are so very eager just to get a pretty girl in front of their camera and call it “art” or some such euphemism. There is so little thought put into lighting, composition, pose theory, eliciting expression, teaching models the craft, creating chemistry and dynamic partnerships, that what passes for photography really is something far less. It is a loss since people who go to such charlatans are turned off by these fiends and we all pay a price. Models become far less trusting and photographers more jaded. The other threat is the absurd amount of TF going on. TF has its place and will always be a part of the industry. But too many “photographers” give their valuable time away in such a manner that it makes it much harder for people who pursue this professionally to succeed. TF has to have strict limits and more importantly, an even stricter sense of philosophy as to why it should be done. All pursuits in life must be followed with a degree of contemplation. Photography is no exception.

 GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?  Rick: Planning is my most important weapon. You can have a great camera, better lenses and superior lighting. You can have supreme command of editing software. If you do not plan accordingly for whatever type of client you are serving, your results will be indifferent at best, disastrous at worst. I want to know the client, understand their motivations and needs and then marry their thought to my vision. I work very hard to make each effort on the behalf of clients as individualized as possible. I go into each shoot with a plan. While I often say “it is never-varying strategy” I do allow for flexibility and spontaneity. However, there has to be a baseline of carefully considered approach and “gaming out” the kinds of outcomes you hope to achieve. Winging it is what you do with SOME of the TF chances you might engage in with a treasured colleague. However, if you are providing a colleague with specific imagery for their needs, a plan is an essential tool. Being a master of preparation means creating a mastery of all the avenues of photographic expression, for you will give earnest thought to lighting, posing, backgrounds, wardrobe, colors and textures, as well as personality, which will deeply influence the mood of each image.

 GlamModelz Magazine: We can see you are a busy commercial photographer. When was the last time you picked up your camera and shot for fun? Tell us about it? Rick: Well, that depends on what you are talking about. I still enjoy landscape in all its forms. On an abnormally warm day this past March here in Massachusetts, after one of the mildest winters we’ve ever had, I took my camera to some favorite spots to find some early Spring flowers and was rewarded with a pair of amazing blossoms. From that I made a composite, posting it on Facebook and tagging as many of those special young ladies that I could, to show my adoration and appreciation. I also have an “inner circle” of trusted models who I enjoy doing exceedingly creative work with from time to time when I can spare myself from my schedule. One of those moments involved a HUGE length of shimmery cloth and some intriguing ways to wrap it about her and the trail it off into the shadows. Both of these kinds of moments are what keep the mind fresh, the spirit recharged and the creative well replenished. People forget that creativity, like water, resides in reservoirs like “spiritual aquifers”. Without time and opportunity for the waters to refill, vitality is lost.

 GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer?  Rick: -From a photographic standpoint, I am most impressed and consistently moved by the works of Rich Cutrone, Alex Manfredini, Drew Santos, Robert Alvarado and Philipe. Each brings to the table an artistic integrity and a passionate intensity that arouses my admiration. I have been accused of being the World’s Worst Workaholic. The beauty each of these gentlemen brings into being pushes me to do better, to not be satisfied with the results that I know I  can improve upon and to seek for that feeling of peace inside when I know I have created something worthy. From an artistic/personal standpoint, I am equally inspired and supported by the models who have become the Pillars of My Studio. Without the devotion, commitment, caring and wonderful understanding of these young ladies, I would still be in the limbo where once I was. I have grown to detest the word “muse” for it is ill-understood and even more poorly used. These wonderful young women go beyond muses, for their friendship and passionate dedication to my artistic and business goals never ceases to amaze me. While my own personal success certainly has appeal, I am driven to create a foundation from which these models can grow their own forms of accomplishment and reach heights that will sustain them personally and professionally. In that way, I guess I am still very much like the class room teacher I was. I am deeply committed to seeing the people in my studio climb the ladder to self-improvement and happiness.

GlamModelz Magazine: I have been admiring your lighting on this night shot. Are you a strobist?  How do you go about planning lighting on such a large scene?   Rick: – I use the lighting that works best in situation that has been presented. If strobes are what the moment calls for, whether it’s in the studio, on the beach, at a location shoot like this car shoot, then strobes it is. If I can utilize natural light fully, I do so. If I need to blend the two, that is the plan. As far as lighting goes, it is essential that depth and complexity are maintained and even enhanced. Whether that requires one light or many lights, I care most about making the subject look enticing, telling some kind of story, drawing the viewer into the scene and keeping them there until withdrawing entails effort. I want all the elements of any image to create harmony and work in such a way that each has its own ascendancy in the viewing, but no one element is wholly dominant. It is interesting that you chose this car shot, as I like shooting cars but don’t do it a lot. I can’t get cars into my studio. Motorcycles are another matter. I get bikes as long as 11 ft into the lift and down the hall, through the doors and into my back room where I can array lights around them like a combat regiment. Then it becomes a frenzy of competing shades and tones to make the bike and the model shine!

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?   Rick: -In this, you can really see my background as a teacher. I expect models/MUAs/stylists and all the other people involved in a shoot to be responsible, devoted, trustworthy and hard working. While photography is an art, professional photography is also a business and as such, appropriate standards of business behavior are essential. Being on time, being honest, being dependable seem like such obvious qualities, but they are not always in evidence and THEY MUST BE. However, there is a human element to this. I do prefer working with people who are respectful, ethical, have compassion and empathy and are thoughtful folk. One of the things that can make any shoot an experiential moment is relaxed and pleasant “give and take” intellectually and emotionally. We are all mortal beings with a need for acceptance and validation. Just as I want each and every person to leave my studio feeling happy, safe and thrilled with their time spent, I want my own experience to be something positive.-

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?   Rick: More than anything, photographers have to do three things. First, know your camera. You should be able to predict the outcome of your actions fairly consistently, whether it is indoor or outdoor conditions. Frustration is a natural occurrence in the brain when forced to deal with complicated problem solving situations. That is how we grow cognitively. But anger is not productive and leads to a form of failure when people give up on being innovative. The more you learn, the more you can learn and once that chain reaction begins, the sky is the limit for improvement. Second, have a serious discussion with yourself about your ethical standards. There are far too many people in this industry for questionable reasons and they cheapen what it is we do. Explore in your heart what you do, why you do it and apply those ethics in an unwavering and equal manner to each and every person you interface with throughout the journey. A reputation for standards and respect is possibly just as important as technical skill. Finally, know what really drives your passion and find a way to make it part of the core of your daily existence. There are genres of photography that do not delight me as much as fashion, glamor and beauty; pinup for instance. I like it but I don’t live for it. As such, I work in directions where my strengths are accentuated and my weaknesses do not cause problems for the client.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.   Rick: -It would have to be a combination of this opportunity with Glam Modelz and those I have been given with Men’s Fitness. Getting a chance to display my work, but at the same time showcasing the superb talents/efforts of the models of my studio makes me as happy and as proud as I could possibly be. I have done a great deal in my life, seen much, experienced much and genuinely feel blessed. But these young ladies are still new to the journey, and anything I can do to help them along the way and make it richer and more rewarding is more important to me by far.-

 GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Rick: -Much like my advice to photographers, models have to have some very serious inner debates. First, you have to really own and embrace the nature of glamor and its reality. Glamor means sexy imagery of a varying range of intensity, but it is not conservative. If you fancy yourself a glamor model and yet feel uncomfortable with “sexy content”, then this field isn’t for you. While you can try to “get use to” lingerie, sexy costumes or implieds, it really is an instinctive thing. Glamor Models BURN in their souls to be in front of that camera and to create imagery that cuts deep into the hearts of viewers. If that fire isn’t there, you are headed down a road that will lead to disappointment. In a similar vein, glamor models have to do some evaluative thinking about the consequences of their actions in this industry. For every one friend or family member who cheers you on and says “You’re so gorgeous and I love your pics”, there will be one person who says words that probably shouldn’t be printed here. No matter what you do to explain to them what this industry is about and why it is important to you, they can’t and won’t understand. Living with the reality of that equation is not an easy thing to do. Many young women want to model, but they also want ALL the support of ALL the people they know. That isn’t realistic. It seems strange to be preaching a pragmatic view of an industry that creates fantasy, but it is an essential life skill. Young women who come into this industry expecting it will be smooth sailing and a fairytale come true are often ground up by the teeth that lay under the surface. The worst hurt is usually taken from those closest to them, like family and friends, those that one would expect the most support from. Glamor imagery elicits some very surprising reactions from people. Often times you will see them in ways you never could have predicted.

 GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?   Rick: -I have had a talent for writing since my boyhood and while I enjoy it and do a fair amount, it doesn’t turn my blood to quicksilver as photography does. I enjoy the outdoors, either flyfishing, camping or hiking, but sadly those pursuits have taken a bit of a backseat to the demands of the studio. I have also dabbled with gardening off and on over the years. I am still an avid reader. My students use to ask me who my favorite author was and my answer is now as it was then, it isn’t possible to choose a favorite when one loves the music of language. One of my stranger and yet most rewarding pursuits was in the avenue of horror television. With my friends Isaac, Mark, Tim and Tom, we started up a “horror-host” TV show on Keene, New Hampshire Public Access many years ago that has grown beyond anything we ever thought it would. It is called Saturday Fright Special and it is or has been viewed in more than half the states in the US and we have produced more than 100 episodes. Writing for the show was once one of the most involved efforts I’ve ever taken on, that is until my studio became the center of my life.-

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?   Rick: -I have many loves when it comes to photography, but those who know me best know that if I could shoot on the beach all the time, each and every day, I would. I suppose I would get bored with it eventually and that one of the joys about life in New England is that the seasons force us to appreciate each and every segment of the year and what it offers. But there is something about the rich colors of sea and sky, the vistas that blend with those elemental forces and how a model can be made to look as if they are commanding, or in tune with, or another of the Forces of Nature around them, all at the same time looking sexy, beautiful and mesmeric. On another level, one of my greatest joys is getting a chance to teach young models and photographers the craft, and seeing their souls open up to this world. One of my favorite memories was of a young lady who had shot with me for the 3^rd time. We sat down at the computer and began reviewing her images. I looked over and saw tears coursing down her face. Her words are graven in my aging memory for all time. “I never thought I’d ever feel this good about myself or feel beautiful like this ever again”. We cannot always know the impact that we have on each other or the impression we leave on the future, but it is moments like that where I know my efforts at creating beauty touch an eternity beyond the boundaries of the lens.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business  ListaMarie, and what goals have your set for your self? ListaMarie: How I got started in the Business of the modeling industry was I got most athletic female in High school. for being the most athletic female they chose myself and 2 other females to be on the front cover of Las Vegas Athletic Club fitness magazine. My current goal is to hopefully be signed by a well known agency within 5 years

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals personally and with your modeling career? ListaMarie: My goals personally is to Retire in the military in 18 years and also maintain my modeling career. I’m currently serving in Afghanistan right now So it’s hard to take the time off but When I do come back I always try to make up the time I was gone. I continue to study the newest fashion and runway projects so I’m that far behind.

 GlamModelz Magazine: When working on concepts for upcoming shoots, how much thought or effort do you put into it? Where does your inspiration come from?  ListaMarie : When I thinking of concepts for an upcoming shoot I put as much effort as I can into. I do some research on what it is I am trying to fulfill and then I ALWAYS discuss it with the photographer to see if they see anything that I don’t or if they can add something I may like for he shoot. It takes about a good 2 weeks in preparation.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts and issues with implied and nude posing? ListaMarie : My personal thoughts on doing implied and nude shots are absolutely Amazing. I Love how human’s can form their bodies into beautiful art. It’s not all about being sexual or trying to be explicit but its being comfortable with your own body and creating these wonderful images of art, a form of expression. Everyone tends to think of it as a negative way but we should all be a little more optimistic and take it as beauty. Whats more beautiful than yourself..

 GlamModelz Magazine: What gets you motivated everyday to stay in shape and look your best at all times?  ListaMarie : What makes me motivated to stay in shape and look my best at all times is myself, and my surroundings. I love to workout and be in the best shape i could possibly be if not better. There’s always room for improvement. I look at magazines and I’ll see another woman’s body and be in awe because I know it takes hard work and dedication to stay in shape. My main motivation is Self discipline, I always want to be better than I was.

GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of family, friends and significant other in regards to your decisions for your modeling career to date? ListaMarie : Thankfully I have had lots of support from my family, friends, and loved ones. When they see me enjoying something that im very passionate for it makes them happy to know that not only is it for fun and pleasure but it’s also for potential work. They see me working hard and always trying to do my best and it shows in each photo shoot i have it just gets better and better. Without support from the people I Love I wouldn’t have made it this far.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts on the whole escort issue? ListaMarie : My thoughts on the whole escort issue is that it shouldn’t be an issue. For some people it makes them feel more comfortable but for some others it makes them shy and nervous. I use an escort for security purposes it makes me feel safe and  as long as their not distracting your session i don’t see a problem with the whole escort issue.

GlamModelz Magazine: Your complexion always looks so flawless. Will you share your beauty secrets you use to keep it that way? ListaMarie : My secret key to having flawless skin is making sure i wash my face everyday when i wake up and when i go to sleep. And I wash it with Ambi products as well as a nice moisturizer to keep my face soft and smooth. Try not to wear make up often because it tends to clog up your pores. Natural beauty is always the best way to go.

GlamModelz Magazine: What has been your greatest success to date? ListaMarie : My greatest success that I recently had was getting published in Flavagirl magazine. I had just got stationed in Ft.Bragg, NC and I worked with a photographer and we shot for 5 hours nearly. And i was sooo tired and so sweaty but we kept pushing through with oh just one more pose then okay 2 more poses and so on and so on. But the hard work paid off because i got published in the October issue.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle rejection from photographers, agencies and your piers? ListaMarie: How I handle rejection is to suck it up and keep pushing. It hurts a little bit knowing that you wanted something and just couldn’t get it. It’s human nature to feel a little upset, but it is also human nature to work even harder for what you wanted. No one can tell you that you can’t do it. Hard work pays off and it should make you that much stronger that you got a better position and they lost out on a great Thing!

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started Don!  Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Don

I loved the darkroom when I started photography.  It fascinated me what you could do to manipulate the images that came on the film.  I was truly hooked!  I continued through high school although other activities started to get in the way.  After that college and then the corporate grind.  Other than taking snapshots I actually lost photography for about 12 years but when DSLR’s emerged my interest got stirred again and once again I was hooked because of the digital darkroom.  I actually started my studio while still in the corporate world as a part time hobby business in 2003 but have been doing photography full time now since 2008.

 GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour?  What other genre’s and styles interest you? Don: I started out like many photographers doing a lot of landscape and creative work.  I never had any interest in portrait work of any kind.  Then I was asked to do a senior photo session for an acquaintance (no pay of course) and realized what a fantastic challenge portrait photography can be.  I was naïve in my prior thought process thinking that portrait work would be “cookie cutter” photography but boy was I wrong!  After that I couldn’t do enough portrait work and that evolved into glamour.

Glamour to me represents all the challenges portrait photography offers.  Lighting, composition, and perspective are the elements I teach my students and live and die with.  The fantastic challenge of creating the most beautiful and creative visual art is what drives my glamour work.

I still enjoy street photography and landscape work.  I’ve really gotten into architectural work lately as well. Like portraiture, I underestimated the challenges of making creative and interesting architectural pictures.  Now that I’ve been doing it commercially it’s become a great diversion from portrait work.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Don: Complicated question!  There is of course the obvious answers like Ansel Adams.  What he did in the darkroom always inspired me to create.

Another obvious choice is Pompeo Posar who did so much beautiful work for Playboy and really created that classy, nude style of glamour that we associate to Playboy style glamour.

Maybe a little less obvious is Ruth Harriet Louise who was the Chief Photographer for MGM studios in the 1920’s and really pioneered “glamour” photography.  Through that evolution we then get to George Hurell who really created the style that we associate with Hollywood Glamour with the likes of Veronica Lake, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, and an endless list of Hollywood Royalty from that generation.

To other genres of photography, Kevin Kubota inspires my wedding photography.

GlamModelz Magazine: What would you consider your personal preference, location or studio and why?  Don: I enjoy both studio and location photography but if I had to choose I would easily go to location photography. Why?  It’s because of the challenges and variables that each unique location or environment offers.  Studio lighting takes skill, but once you have a set established you know what to expect from all the variables.  Location shooting you have to react, be creative, and flexible to get the shots.  I like that dynamic style of shooting.   My style reflects that I think.  I don’t like using tripods for portrait work because the dynamic, fluid action of a slight angle or perspective change can make or break a great shot in my opinion.  That’s what location shooting does as well.

 GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry?  What would you change about it, if you could? Don:  As someone who makes a living doing photography full time, the biggest source of frustration are the multitude of amateur photographers posting essentially free photography on Craigslist.  It’s really commoditized photography which is detrimental to photography in general.

What I try to do is educate potential clients via my blog to what good photography is.  The only reason any of the “CL” photographers get traction is because people don’t have a perception of quality.  Most of the work you see from CL photographers is very poor (there are exceptions of course).  It really is a situation of “you get  what you pay for”.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?  Don: Light.  Be it the sun, reflector(s), speedlights or moonlights, the light source is key.  Also for me it’s my chair cushions that come along because I’m always either on my knees, lying on the ground, or sitting on my butt.

 GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Don: Trade shoots are great as long as it’s an equitable trade.  The equity I bring is the photography, retouching, and visibility.  The model’s equity needs to be not only her looks and talent, but her professionalism…meaning communication, punctuality, and reliability.

I do very few trade shoots.  If I do it’s to try out a concept for an upcoming commercial shoot or something I specifically want to add to my portfolio.  Paid is the best option as I’m trying to make a living doing this.  My market is a huge trade market for glamour work so that’s a challenge.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography?  Other goals?   Don: I have basically two goals for my photography:   First, I want to create the absolute best product and art for every single client I work with.

Second, I want to continually improve my skills.  I look at photography as a challenge that no one ever truly masters. When you strive to master it however, you get closer and closer and create ever-improving products.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should  Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?  Don: I think a good sense of humor is always a great place to start.  I like to have a lighthearted set with interaction and lots of fun with free flowing ideas.  I see the shot I want to accomplish in my head, but I’m more than willing to try anything that might get a better result.  Another quality is flexibility. Certainly the physical attribute but specifically in this case the mental flexibility to not let distractions or interruptions kill the shoot. That leads me into patience and a strong work ethic.  Although I mentioned that fun and humor is important, the professionalism to always realize that we’re there to do a job is critically important.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?  Don: One word…LEARN.  Read, look through glamour magazines, attend workshops, do everything you can to give yourself a clear vision and the tools to achieve that vision for a glamour shoot.

Also make sure that your definition of “glamour” is consistent to what you want to achieve.  Nudes, implied nudes, swimwear, lingerie, and fashion all have glamour elements.  In other words…realize the context that you will be shooting glamour. The analogy I like to give is if someone asks you to draw a car, what do you draw?  A convertible, a hatchback, a sedan, a coupe, a luxury, a sports car, etc. etc..  See what I mean?  Without the proper context it’s hard to have a vision of what you’re trying to do.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.  Don: I think my biggest accomplishment in photography is the shear fact that I’ve been able to survive being a full time professional photographer!  It was a frightening and exhilarating decision I made in 2008 to do this full time.  Especially since the economy essentially tanked right at the time I decided to do this.  It wasn’t quite as scary because I did have photography as a hobby business prior to 2008, but not having my main income source anymore scared me to sleepless nights!  But, I’m surviving and feel like there’s momentum in a positive direction right now.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Don: First, hire a great photographer in your area to create art for you.  First impressions are ever lasting so the first pictures someone sees of you should be the best possible.  I know budgets are a problem for some aspiring models but be willing to offer sweat equity as payment or partial payment for shooting with a top photographer in your area.  Be willing to assist on a few shoots or do hair and makeup if that’s what it takes to get that top work in your portfolio.

Second, be professional.   Don’t flake out, always show up on time, be sober, timely communication, are all things that will indicate to the photographer that you are willing to work hard to get the art.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?  Don: I was a competitive clay target shooter (Trapshooting) for over half my life.  Although I don’t have the time to do it now, I was considered to be the best in Idaho when I was in high school and was invited to Colorado Springs in 1980 to try out for the 1984 Olympic Trapshooting Team.  Probably one of my biggest regrets as I turned it down because of a girlfriend.  Ouch!

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?  Don: I’m a huge animal lover!  My absolute favorite model is my boy Tomo.  He’s a Malamute and Wolf mix rescue dog from the Idaho Humane Society that came to me 9 years ago that is my absolute best friend!  I champion animal rights and I live in a state that is absolutely last in animal rights legislation so it’s a source of frustration and satisfaction all at the same time.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you go through any special rituals before or during a photoshoot ? Would this effect a new model’s first shoot, or all models and all shoots.   Don: I never shave the day of a shoot so I’ll look a bit stubbly.  Its just become a ritual for me ever since I had the best overall shoot of my life when I woke late, couldn’t take the time to shave, and got to my set out of breath.  Since then I just don’t on the morning of a shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: How long have you been working in the beauty industry?

Sonia: I have been in the beauty industry for over 15 years. Makeup/Beauty/Fashion is my passion and I love to make people happy and beautiful! I have a natural passion for the art of makeup and I assure you will witness it through my work. I love playing with colors to make all my clients look naturally stunning.

I currently run my own business and have been involved with MAC Cosmetics in the Chicago area since 2000. Being trained by MAC has been such an asset to my career. While in London, I trained with Ash Kumar (www.ashkumar.com) who is a leader in the Asian beauty world. I learned tips and tricks that have helped advance my artistic techniques and made my clients look their their best. I do bridal events as well as fashion and with both I love to use color to enhance the natural beauty of my clients.

GlamModelz Magazine: You do both hair and makeup styling. Which would you say is your forte, or which do you prefer?

Sonia: Even though I have the ability to do both makeup and hair – Makeup is my forte. I love making my bridal clients naturally beautiful and flawless and my fashion clients bold and different. I love to color-play, so you will see a lot of that in my work. I have to tell you that I love-love-love being a makeup artist because every face is a blank canvas and its my job to create an amazing outcome. One of my favorite things about being a makeup and hair artist is the interaction with clients because I love working with people and that I get to make this world beautiful, one client at a time. I am so grateful for where I was and where I have come. I truly enjoy my career and enjoy teaching my clients how they can become a fashionista with just a little bit of makeup and hair.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you see as the big trend for makeup or hair this year? Any guess what next year’s trends might be?

Sonia: The current trend is the bold, bright lip… which I am loving! Any woman can wear this look: just make sure that all of the rest of your makeup is neutral and then add a splash of color on your lips. Makeup is what you make of it. Every woman is different so create own your style and make it unique… just like you.

GlamModelz Magazine: When you’re not making people beautiful, what can we find you doing?

Sonia: My sole passion is making others beautiful and happy! If I am not out doing makeup and hair I am with my three beautiful daughters and wonderful husband. I also am trying to be more of a blogger and update my website with new tips and tricks for makeup/hair and the latest fashion trends.
