Jim Jurica, of Hanover Park, Illinois, is our featured guest Photographer of April. Jim, has a distinctive style and artistic look and an eye for beauty and grace.GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Jim:

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Jim: I like to shoot about everything! And I don’t like to linger too long at shooting any one style. Glamour is more of a recent addition to my portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Jim: I find inspiration in the models themselves. Before a shoot, I like to sit and talk with them one-on-one for as long as it takes to earn their trust and learn a little about who they are as a person first. Then I try to work their personality into the shoots.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Jim: Challenges? It’s a daunting task to be a generalist in an industry full of specialists. I need to be proficient in all kinds of imagery to stay afloat in my core business (stock photography). However, it’s the challenge of always doing something new and different that I enjoy most, so I wouldn’t change that one bit.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Jim: I’m a softbox addict. I own just about every size and shape of softbox you can think of. But more and more I keep finding I can get equivalent looks with umbrellas and the understanding of how to use them properly.

Also: shadows. I think of shadows and contrast as just another tool in my arsenal. I believe that sometimes what you DON’T show is more important. It’s that tease and hint of something more to an image that gets people looking twice.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Jim: I know many photographers look down their nose at the idea of trade shoots but I do them all the time. Partly because the nature of stock photography is speculative and difficult to justify paying models when I don’t know if the shots will make money. But also because photography isn’t just a business, it’s also my hobby. Trade shoots help keep things fun and fresh.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Jim: I usually work with models that can do their own hair and makeup. That being said, I’ve been incorporating more MUA’s and stylists into the mix more lately. I tend to avoid models that are too well established because they bring the same looks that everyone else has in their portfolios. Rarely do I choose a model based on beauty alone. I look for personality or anything that says this is real, live person and collaborator, not just a pretty prop. This could be the facial expression or posing in their images. Or a consistency of interesting shots they’ve produced with other photographers that tells me the model has played a large part of the process. And sometimes it’s a simple as what they write when messaging back and forth that clicks and tells me I’ll enjoy working with them.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Jim: Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Move your lights around see what happens. The wonderful thing about photography is that we get to bury our bad shots and no one is the wiser for it. If you take time to try different approaches (rather than simply duplicate what has always worked in the past) you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Second piece of advice: only post your best work. One good image is worth dozens of mediocre shots. Leave them wanting more.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Jim: Completing my “100 Topless Models” project. The premise sounds simple: a studio shoot combining art nude and beauty shot styles. Add a unique posing prop to each set for variety, and a color-coordinated spotlight on the backdrop to match the color of the prop.

In reality, shooting the project with over 100 models consumed the better part of one year of my life. To get all these models to work on my project on a TF basis, I did plenty of trade shoots for their portfolio needs. My fastest shoot was only fifteen minutes long. The longest was eight hours of fashion looks in exchange for less than ten minutes of time working on my project.

I set only two rules: (1) we couldn’t shoot any prop that had previously been used for another set and (2) I couldn’t say no to anyone who responded. Some of the “models” weren’t models at all, but rather makeup artists, other photographers, friends of models, and even one person who just walked in off the street. As the project progressed, some of the props started getting crazier and more elaborate. We used everything from flowers, scarves and jewelry to a slinky toy, body paint, raw meat, fake blood and even a live python.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Jim: Being pretty is NOT enough. You need to be a bit of a salesman too. Outside of the occasional shoot for fun, modeling is a lot of work and to be successful requires trying lots of different approaches to see what sticks. You need to be proactive about messaging and always respond in a timely manner. The ability to show up for shoots on time and prepared is essential. And don’t take rejections personally!

Also, always come to shoots prepared to do your own hair and makeup, even if hair and makeup styling are provided that day. It’s not uncommon for the makeup artist to get lost and be two hours late. Or the hair stylist decides to quit the industry that day and leave everyone high-and-dry. This is your big chance to save the day and look like a real pro.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Jim: I’ve worked with over 400 models in the past four years on all kinds of content. And yet the scary fact remains that the top-selling, most published model I’ve shot is: myself. And my number-two selling model is my mother.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Jim: To always try new things and improve. In 2011, I’m focusing on more glamour publications. And of course, to continue to have fun making a living at something I love to do.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Frank: My “real job” has always been in Information Technology. I have always had an interest in photography but it wasn’t until 2003 that I actually developed an interest in fashion and glamour.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Frank: I really love shooting children and candid wedding shots, I currently shoot for LifeTouch Photography and find shooting children with disabilities the most rewarding work I have ever done.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Frank: Greg Kadel’s work is probably the work that most inspires me. He has an eye for that perfect look that is just amazing.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Frank: I firmly believe that it would be a better world if ALL photographers Stopped shooting for TF*….. I don’t know a photographer that doesn’t complain about money, if we all took an oath to quit giving away our work …. That complaint would soon go away.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Frank: A good eye… Cameras, lens, lights, meters are all good to have but without an eye for the subject it really doesn’t matter what equipment you are using.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Frank: My major focus is training inexperienced people who have a dream into turnkey posers with the ability to do a three hour shoot with no direction. When I do have a model that goes through my training and he/she becomes successful as a model then I have reach my goal.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Frank: A drive for perfection… a never ending desire to obtain a look that will make a perfect picture.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Frank: Take down all the walls that are in front of them and just go for it… They must have an eye on the goal at all times and consistently raise thee bar with who you work with …

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Frank: Being with my high school sweetheart for 42 years… Now that’s an accomplishment

It is with great pleasure GlamModelz Magazine presents a peak through the lens with Brandon Gamble. Brandon’s unique and artistic style can be credited to the start of his career as a fashion model. Now Brandon uses his keen eye behind the lens.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Brandon Gamble: I’ve been in the fashion and photography industry since 1987. Starting as a model for California Fashions I was introduced to the commercial world of fashion and introduced to Rafael Martin who shot for many of the high end clothing companies in Los Angeles and San Francisco. After leaving the modeling industry and assisting Rafael on hundreds of shoots I began shooting my own photography for my production company Top Entertainment which provided models and dancers for runway, production shows, and corporate events. After moving to Las Vegas in 1990 I continued to do photography for the dancers and models of Las Vegas and began my own work in fashion photography. My eye for the artistic elements and my attention for details of the fashion industry made my work very sought after and popular. I have a natural passion for bringing my subjects to a comfortable, calm, and relaxed state to bring out the best in anyone or anything. I’m truly easy to work with and to be around. I love the fashion and glamour industry and continue to grow as top photographer in the business.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Brandon Gamble: I like glamour and beauty because there is such a vast array of artistic shoots. You’ve got different cultures within the models, make up possibilities, and unlimited spectrum of themes to explore. I’ve always had an affinity for the depth of black and white artistic scapes.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Brandon Gamble: Positive models who bring lots of energy, excitement, and intrigue to the shoots. Models who are open and fun who allow my creative side to be explored and blossom. Its difficult to work with close minded models especially when there is negativity abound.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Brandon Gamble: The industry has become very flaky with no shows or late arrivals. It’s difficult to contact requested models. I’d love to see the work ethic of models, makeup artists, and hair stylists brought up to a higher more professional standard. I’ve found it difficult to coordinate with makeup artists, models, hair stylist when everyone is not on the same page with their work ethics.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Brandon Gamble: I invest a lot of time and money in my lighting and education. I am constantly reading about different lighting and techniques to enhance my work. I spend a lot of time researching lighting companies that are bringing new technologies to our art. It’s important to invest time in building and brain storming set design but not to the point of taking away from the essence or energy coming from each individual subject.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Brandon Gamble: Every professional prefers to be paid but to ignore the different ideas that men and women can bring to you that don’t have the finances to bring an incredible shot shouldn’t be ignored. Otherwise I’m always willing to listen to individuals ideas I can do TFs if my schedule will allow it.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Brandon Gamble: Sensuality, sexuality, and allure sells product. If a client comes to me to move a product that has a male base or market putting a beautiful model around or with their product in the most seductive manner would be the way to produce a shot. I believe a truly good photographer should be known as passionate about his or her work.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Fashion/Glamour/Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Brandon Gamble: I’ve always found fashion/glamour/beauty to be artistic. I’ve found whether its hair, makeup, or clothing design every one or aspect brings an artistic flair to the shoot. Pinup has always held an interest for me. I love admiring the pinup art that has transpired over the years.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Brandon Gamble: To continue on my path of success and finding new and innovative ways to bring my art to the glamour and fashion industry. I’d also like to teach and share my knowledge with aspiring photographers.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Brandon Gamble: Being prompt and on time. Have a high standard of work ethic, be adventurous and creative, listen to their director, and above all never bringing negativity to each other during a shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Brandon Gamble: Lots of networking, be open to paying your dues, and spend a lot of time with people related to the industry in social events and networking parties. Always be 100% respectful of models space and needs. Your reputation will go a long way.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Brandon Gamble: I have many accomplishments to date but one of my proudest shoots was with a gal attempting to get into Playboy magazine and the test shoot we prepared for her wasn’t published but got her into the magazine. It made me feel excellent that I helped this individual achieve her dreams.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to shoot glamour? Brandon Gamble: Spend the money! There’s nothing worse than a bad portfolio. Find reputable photographers, makeup artists, and hair designers and produce an outstanding portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Brandon Gamble: I am faculty teacher and trainer for Body Arts and Science International out of Costa Mesa California certifying Pilates instructors worldwide.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Brandon Gamble: I always bring 110% to my shoots, I never do anything half assed, always totally committed, never extend myself, and desire models and clients to be completely thrilled with the outcome of my photography.

Mike is an up and coming artist from Richmond, Virginia. with a refreshing style and unique eye for beauty in all areas of Photography. It’s such a pleasure to have this opportunity to find out what really makes Mike such an inspiring artist, so let’s get started!

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?

Mike: I actually picked up a camera for the first time a little over a year ago. I was pretty much focused on people with the intention of portraits with a subtle twist of individuality that seems so lacking in the usual places. I knew I wanted to shoot with people but didn’t know anybody or how to get started so I joined Model Mayhem and went to some local meet and greet events. With my wife’s encouragement I have continued to sharpen my skills, try new things, and learn more about the makeup and wardrobe styling. My wife gives me a hard time as the only guy she knows with a closet full of dresses and tutus. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour and Beauty? Mike: It has happened quite by accident although not unexpectedly. I started out doing portraits but with each successive shoot the style became more and more glamour and fashion oriented. I liked what I saw and I let the style develop itself. Now it is what I do almost exclusively.

GlamModelz Magazine: What inspires you as a photographer? Mike: I find inspiration at every turn. I look through fashion magazines and wander the cobblestone streets or industrial areas of town. Displays in the mall and people watching in the park yield ideas I have incorporated into my photographs. But most of all, I am inspired by interesting faces. It seems that every face I see tells a story and when it comes to glamour/beauty, the face always inspires the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? Mike: You mean other than time? My biggest challenge is pleasing myself…I am my own worst critic. Next would be stepping out of the box and trying new concepts to keep things fresh. I feel fortunate that photography is a serious passion but not my solitary means of income. I comment frequently that if I had to please art directors and meet deadlines or make a big profit, that I would not enjoy it as much and the incentive for creativity would be diminished in favor of a cookie cutter approach.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Mike: I’m considered a heretic…I use Sony/Minolta. My most essential pieces of equipment are my fast Zeiss lenses. I use the 85mm lens so much that I have one camera devoted to it. I shoot primarily on location and the ability to use all the available light at a lower ISO is good so I can travel light. I’d like to think that I also equip myself well with a vision of the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Mike: I’m as selective for paid, as I am TF. I might be a rebel but I like TF. It takes the pressure off and allows for more relaxed interaction among team members. Paid work is, well, work. TF is fun with the right people.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Mike: Technically unsound. Drawn to natural light. Random precision. I am very laid back and patient in a shoot and like to let the model flow through her poses. On occasion I have specific poses in mind but as a general rule I let the model stay in her groove, only stopping her to get more shots of a special look or pose that she has hit. I spend as much time getting to know the model as I do photographing her…it may lead to a great candid shot. With me, everyone in the team is encouraged to contribute; I want the end product to benefit everyone involved. Generally though, I will take the lead to ensure ‘the look’ that is desired.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Mike: Easy…to take photographs that people like to look at.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc. have to work with you? Mike: A sense of humor. Proficiency in baking is a real plus (no nuts in the chocolate chip cookies, please).

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Mike: Somehow getting my beautiful wife, Beth to put up with me for 23 years! Well, either that or beating my 12-year-old son in Madden 11…now that was big!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Mike: Create a vision. Scout locations. Keep a log of times as well as seasons that the lighting is best. Look for the light…everywhere you look there is a sweet spot of light. Read up on posing and lighting methods. And most importantly, recognize and learn from mistakes.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Mike: Punctuality and reliability may make you more money than you think. A favorable reputation of being there on time ready to shoot is one of the best things you can do for consistent work. Learn more than one facial expression and practice posing in front of a mirror…a lot and don’t wear colored contact lenses unless requested. Learn to do your own hair and makeup well. There won’t always be a MUA available and as a model, you can become a triple threat if you can do hair and makeup for yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other interests? Mike: Other than family, I enjoy mountain biking and writing. I’m also a gadget freak.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Sam tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Sam Rambo: Well I have been shooting for as long as I can remember, but mostly landscape…. I joined the Air Force in 1993 and I got out in 2004. I worked in Las Vegas for a top secret government contractor. I decided, that was not the life I wanted. I moved back to Washington State and took a job with the government, doing scientific research. Then in 2006 me and my wife adopted a 3 year old boy, and it changed the way I look at people. A year or two after I reached a point I figured there had to be more to life. So I started looking into glamour/model photography. I met a wonderful photographer named Evan Moodie, he offered to teach me a style of glamour lighting and had an amazing model Lynnzie Cherelle fly in for our shoot, and well ever since then it has been a super fast ride, with some wonderful people.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Sam Rambo: There is just something about lighting up a woman’s curves with creative lighting in a way that just makes people take a second look, and that’s what I enjoy doing. I mean sometime even I have to step back look at the image and just say wow, I created that? Well I have done a little this and that, but I keep coming back to edgy side of glamour, I think it’s just something I “get” and understand.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Sam Rambo: Inspiration is everywhere I look. Sometime I happen across a port that just wows me and I ask myself, how did they do that! Other times I look at stuff like my big gold reflector and think “how hot a model would look, with the right lighting in front of that!” So I call up one of my favorite models and tell them I have something I want to try…… and usually they are game to become part of my visions.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Sam Rambo: The biggest challenge I think most photographers face is the fact of making your work pay while still maintaining a sense of who you are. Another fact that I uses to face is, I was a man trying to shoot glamour. This is due to the fact that there a darker side of this industry. When you are starting off it’s not the easiest hurdle to over come, but like I say, treat the models as if they were your own daughter. If you keep a high level of standards about your shoots, then by the simple fact of word of mouth, your name will spread is this tight nit community!

GlamModelz Magazine: What is essential for you as a predominate studio glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Sam Rambo: This is a very simple one to answer, a good open minded model! I believe that a model who is serious about what she is doing makes all the difference in the world! When I come across a good model, like Shaunna, from my shoot today, it makes my job ten times easier!

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Sam Rambo: Honestly I believe that both have there place! If a model wants me to create her vision, or wants me to recreate one of my old series of images then no doubt, it should be paid. If a model is there to create my vision, I’m open to the idea of a TF* shoot. TF* is a great way to get your port established or updated……..but lets face it, at the end of the day, I can’t going down to the local TF store pick up the rolls of paper, supplies, expensive equipment, pricey software and experience needed to produce these type of images.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Sam Rambo: This is one I can answer with a few words, edgy, sexy, classy, oh yeah and edgy! I like to create that image that makes peoples jaws drop, if I can pull off a image using nothing but a model and a simple paper backdrop, then make you take a second look, mission accomplished!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Sam Rambo: Well this where I state the obvious, I would love to end up doing paid shoots for a lot of the major magazines….. but with that being said, a better long term goal is to put out a book, a successful book, that is my life in photography, my visions, my art, and all the wonderful people I have shot. It would be nice to leave a little something behind that is 100% me.

GlamModelz Magazine: What type of person do you want to be know as? Sam Rambo: At the end of the day I want people to say, he was a good husband and dad, he was a fair and honest guy who had a true passion for everything he loved in life. Sam was Sam and it doesn’t get much better than that.

This is how I judge a successful shoot, if people walk away with a smile on there face, I did my job right! I try to be me, and I don’t change for anyone.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Sam Rambo: Ok this is one of my big things, I like to only work with people with good hearts, no divas allow through my door! For models I like them to be about creating cool edgy ideas, very open minded. For MUA’s/Stylists well I have been fortunate to work with some of the best here in the northwest! Honestly I think I love the good conversations and their creativity the best!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Sam Rambo: Some would say…I have done tons of things in both my photography life, and my day to day work life……but I would have to say it was serving my country in the US Air Force for 10 years. I’m one of those people who will never forget about all my brothers and sisters out there assuring we get a good nights sleep! All of the fine men and women who gave there lives so we have the choice to live ours how we want! Amen to them all!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Sam Rambo: Look for people who’s work you respect, talk to them, ask them how, when, why, heck offer to meet them for coffee, you will find that there are a lot of good people out there! Second, buy the right equipment once, don’t go for the cheapest lighting you can find, invest in your future! Third, get on some photography forums, get involved. Forth, keep your name clean, treat you models with respect! Fifth, network, network, network! Sixth and last, “the only rule in shooting is there is no rules”

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Sam Rambo: First, 1 or 2 great images from a good photographer is worth more than 20 ok images from a average photographer. Second, invest in yourself, get a good MUA, get a good photographer, do what little travel you need to do, to shoot with the better people. Third, never get the “diva complex” that will shut the door on opportunities you never knew existed. Forth, do your home work, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, ask around find out what type of person that photographer is. Fifth, if it sounds to good to be true, more than likely it is. Treat your opportunities like you would when buying a home. do your research. Sixth and last, drive, you need the long term drive, if you think, just because you shot with someone great next week you will be famous, 99.99% of the time your wrong, the models that get ahead keep trying and going after it, your success depends on how much drive you have!

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Sam Rambo: Well most people around me know that I’m sort of the jack of all trades, from remodeling my house, working on electronics, to tuning up my own car, I just do it, I figure it out and do it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Sam Rambo: I truly believe we should never stop learning, I think if you stop pushing yourself to improve with your next shoot, you should just call it a day and throw in the towel. No matter what you are shooting, make the last set something different, something you have never done, push your limits!

GlamModelz Magazine interviewed our newest contributing photographer Barney Lee and learned the secrets to his success in producing high quality, stylish images. Barney has a talent for making every image; be it glamour, fashion or editorial, convey an elegant sexiness like no other. Read on to learn more…Practice, has made “Perfect”.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Barney Lee: I started shooting when I was a freshman in high school. Three of my buddies and I all went to get our first SLR cameras about the same time and formed a camera club. We spent many a night on rooftops shooting nightscapes in New York City. I didn’t start shooting glamour until about three years ago. I just decided that it was something I felt I could do and wanted to see just how good I could get at doing it.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Barney Lee: Basically I love women. I feel they are the most beautiful creations by god and his greatest gift to man. I see a softness and aura that surrounds them and I try to capture that in my images.

I like to try my hand at more artistic implied and nude images when the opportunity presents itself.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Barney Lee: I can draw inspiration from a lot different sources. Like TV or magazines. I can be sitting down in the middle of a conversation with someone and a women can walk by and I start thinking to myself of different ways to capture her beauty. I also have Photographers that I draw inspiration from. Seeing their work gives me an energy to try and capture something with my flavor added to it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Barney Lee: Right now my biggest adversary is the economy. It is hard to get people to spend their hard earned money on images. So I do my best to give my customers as much value as possible without putting myself in the poor house.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Barney Lee: I would say the lighting is most important in setting a mood for a great image. My favorite modifier right now is my beauty dish. It gives me control of soft gradual shadows that sculpts the subjects face.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Barney Lee: I’m no different than anyone else in this industry. We all want to get paid for what we are good at and what we love to do. I do limit the amount of TF work I do now. I am still willing to work with others on a TF basis but what I do now is limit the amount of post production work that I will do.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Barney Lee: I don’t know if I can put a label on it. My style is somewhat artistic and hyper real. It just depends on what I see in the raw capture that determines which way I go with the post work. Sometimes it turns out to be a soft focus and sensual and the next may be sharp, gritty and have a 3D feel to it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Barney Lee: To have lots of fun. When I shoot I feel like a kid again. It keeps my imagination active and always has me thinking of ways I can continue to improve. GlamModelz Magazine: Other goals? Barney Lee: I want to become a contributor to GlamModelz magazine. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Barney Lee: Just one quality really counts with me. That’s to be driven to create the best images that we can. The team working together towards accomplishing that end goal. They shouldn’t be afraid to throw out ideas and concepts that they feel can improve upon our mission. .

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Barney Lee: Getting published has been my primary goal the last couple of years. Now that the mission has reached it’s goal, I find myself wanting more of it. Hopefully I will get published so much that everybody will know my name.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Barney Lee: Research and find a style that interest you. Find a photographer that shoots in style similar to what you’re interested in and study him. Study not just the poses and lighting but the nuances that the image holds. Keep trying to recreate it and then make it your own.. GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Barney Lee: Keep your head up and keep working towards your goals. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Barney Lee: Yes I do have other valuable skill sets. I am a HVAC engineer and currently utilize those skills for a regional hospital in North Carolina. I’m also a certified computer technician.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Barney Lee: I love old school R&B, I’m a family man with a 10 year old daughter who also shares my passion for photography.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?
Jeff DeHaven: I am what you might consider a “late bloomer” in the realm of photography. I started out at an early age in the broadcasting and television business; moved into video editing, then onto computer animation, and recently photography. As a whole I have always had an interest in visual arts. Through chance and networking, I stumbled into a large scale glamour shoot for a local bar that wanted a calendar produced featuring their waitresses. I have been shooting ever since. It has become a passion, an obsession, and I am driven to improve with every day and every shoot.

  GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour, Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you?
Jeff DeHaven: Glamour, Beauty, Fashion are all genres that connect the viewer and model in a very visceral and uniquely intimate way. It is a moment in time, a capture of pure beauty that is stopped and preserved by the image–using techniques that our eyes would never process–the high intensity of studio lighting enhancing skin tone or the reflection of sunlight outdoors for fill light. “The tricks of the trade” to create that perfect moment in time and the end results from this creative exercise are very fulfilling to me. Getting that perfect capture of a beautiful model is a collaboration that creates art that I am proud to display, and one that the model can share in as well.

I enjoy a large spectrum of photography styles and genres, particularly macro and HDR (high dynamic range) landscape photography.

Macro photography is a joy, as you create images that bring the smallest details or elements and make them larger than life. Seeing the pollen particles on a flower, or the tiny hooks on a Praying Mantis’ arms, or a more recent obsession: water droplets- capturing the moment of impact.

HDR landscape photography creates powerfully toned images that represent a full spectrum of exposure that would otherwise be impossible in a single capture. It is a combination of several exposures (image captures) to combine, tonemap and better represent the full gamut of what our eyes can see. For example, when you expose an image for the foreground, and it’s a very sunny day, you may acquire a decent capture, although the sky is blown out to pure white. If you expose that same image for the sky, trying to capture all the cloud details and blue, you will end up with a very dark foreground. However; if you take several exposures (captures), one balanced, the second two stops above and a third image that is two stops below, then combine them into a High Dynamic Range image (HDR) and then tonemap that image for viewing using a program like photomatix,  then you are playing with some fun stuff!

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer?
Jeff DeHaven: My fellow GlamModelz photographers are certainly an inspiration to me. In fact, Dave Davis is largely responsible for the success of my first large scale studio glamour shoot. I am also driven, compelled, obsessed with creating art and imagery that grabs people’s attention. I am fortunate to have friends that have worked in the industry and offer me real critique to help improve my craft.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could?
Jeff DeHaven: There is definitely a lot of competition in this industry, as well as technical challenges. There is nothing I could do to change that fact, however I look at these challenges as an opportunity, educational and mental, to improve my work constantly. To rise above the competition and show what a truly driven and passionate individual can accomplish.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer, to capture your “best shot”?
Jeff DeHaven: Good glass and quality lighting is key for me. It doesn’t matter what camera you use, but a sharp lens and proper use of lighting can make or break an image. I happen to use Canon gear, specifically the EOS 5D MkII and all my lenses are “L” series, which are top of the line for Canon cameras.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences?
Jeff DeHaven: I am still building a portfolio in glamour and fashion photography, it is a constantly evolving genre, so I will work with models interested in enhancing their portfolio as well. There is a well known saying that if you are good at something, never do it for free- and I do charge for portrait work among many other commercial venues of photography–see my website: www.dehavendigital.com . I can see the value in exchanging my time for quality portfolio pieces as both parties can benefit greatly.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style?
Jeff DeHaven: Under construction! I am evolving as I go; not sure how to pin down a particular style, but I tend to enjoy a more vibrant and warm style of image- where the colors are rich, the tones are balanced and the resulting image shows depth.

GlamModelz Magazine: What drives you?
Jeff DeHaven:  My son is my world, a source of inspiration for me to be the best I can. To set an example for him. I am also driven by a passion for excellence, constant improvement.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?
Jeff DeHaven: Be professional, on-time, ready. Have fun, have a sense of humor, know how to “work it”!  Makeup artists and stylists put in alot of time just like the photographer and model. When everyone is working and doing their part, enjoying themselves, magic and epic images are the result.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.
Jeff DeHaven: My career in both Photography and I.T. are all self taught, and I am very proud of my ambitions bearing fruit. I have a strong will and determination to learn and improve, and that is a great source of pride for me. As of 2010 I am a full time photographer, this is my business and profession.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?
Jeff DeHaven: Be passionate, dedicated to learning and don’t ever fall into a trap where you think you know more than anyone else. There is always more to learn… about everything. Do research, try tutorials, read the information on Glammodelz.com and other sites or blogs like Strobist.com. Don’t be afraid to try new things or “break the rules”. Use your camera equipment and experiment, defy the light meter every now and then.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models?
Jeff DeHaven: Use a mirror, work on your poses. Learn to be as expressive as possible, particularly with your eyes. Learn your best angles and use them. Always keep in mind where your lighting is. If you will be doing any glamour photography that exposes skin, do not wear a bra or other constrictive clothing to your shoot as the lines and creases in your skin will take time to wear off.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?
Jeff DeHaven: I am very proficient in all areas of Information Technology, this was my main job until switching to photography in 2010. I have worked in 3D animation, stills, video editing, sound editing, and music. I am also classically trained in Graphic Design, proficient in the entire Adobe creative suite, Quark Xpress, etc…

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you?
Jeff DeHaven: I once ate 46 pieces of sushi in one sitting, and I am not a big guy. I love sushi. However; I do NOT like monkfish liver, I almost projectile vomited trying that.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started Dean! Tell me about your background. How did you get started in Photography? Dean: I’ve been a life-long lover of photography but up until a few years ago, never thought that it could ever become something that I could become so passionate about. As a schoolteacher of now 26 years, I have had the wonderful luxury of time in the summers to pursue my various hobbies. About 8 years ago, I made the decision to get serious about photography, with the sole intent of becoming a portrait photographer of senior high students and their senior portfolios. What I thought would be a perfect part-time summer job turned into something much different. I felt I needed to hone my skills and joined One Model Place with the intent of shooting with new models and killing two birds with one stone…gaining a style and improving my technique. What I didn’t expect was that in a short time, I’d develop a style that people liked and take me in a whole different direction than what I initially planned out for myself.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Dean: What inspires me the most is the challenge of coming up with interesting and creative locations to shoot at. I love poking around an alley or walking the streets of an urban area, searching for something unique that the subject I’m working with can interact with. The other thing that motivates me is the other professional photographers whose work challenges me to be better at my craft. There’s some amazing talent in this industry.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Dean: My biggest challenge is a personal one. I sometimes feel l get too comfortable with my style. Don’t get me wrong…I love the style I’ve developed, but I also believe that one should never become so comfortable that they don’t stretch and grow. I’d like to see myself take a few more risks and see what happens as a result.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Dean: Of course…my Nikon camera and lenses are my lifeline. I’ve been a lifelong Nikon shooter, but didn’t really start getting my best images until I decided to invest in quality glass. I rented a high-end lens for a wedding I shot, and never put my old lens on the camera again after that day. Having a portable power source has been another step up with regard to equipment. I rarely shoot in studio, so having a way to use studio lights on location has been great.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Dean: TFP/CD shoots are a great way to build portfolios and gain experience. I’ve appreciated all the fantastic models that shot TF with me over the years; I couldn’t have developed my style without them. At some point where one’s work is in demand, I believe that TFP/CD has to be very selective and should naturally switch to paid work. There are a few special models I’ve built a relationship over the years with whom I will always shoot TF; at least until they get sick and tired of me. I do find models from time to time that I’m really motivated to shoot with and TFP/CD is always an option with them.

GlamModelz Magazine: You have a unique posing style, do you find ideas from magazines, or pose the model per location as needed? Dean: I really don’t look for ideas, but do pay attention when I see something I like. I spend more time than I should on Model Mayhem and see some extremely talented people doing some amazing things. I’m definitely not beneath stealing ideas from them. My personal style is that I prefer asymmetrical lines and angles…angles…angles. And, as I stated earlier, finding a location that the model can interact with helps a lot with posing ideas too.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Dean: I’m very laid back and enjoy the interaction with my subject as much as or more than the photography itself. I’m not opposed to hanging off a ledge or getting down on my oversized belly to get a perspective or angle that’s different. I love vibrant color and always strive to match wardrobe to location. And, being a life-long lover of long legs…I’m forever looking for ways to accentuate and flatter that part of the female form.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Dean: At this point, my goal is to continue to grow and build a style that others in the industry can respect. Personally, I’d like to see myself experiment with some new techniques and continue to be a student of the craft.

GlamModelz Magazine: We had the opportunity to examine your work closely and I really must complement you on the large production High Fashion work. Can you briefly describe what is involved with a large production shoot such as this? Dean: I’ve been blessed to work with some stunning models and wonderful makeup and hair stylists. Putting in the time to scout locations and investigating new techniques has also added a lot to what happens when I shoot fashion.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Dean: A willingness to be a part of a team effort is vital. I love having people around me who aren’t afraid to throw out ideas and give input towards what’s happening in front of the lens. I like working with picky people who know what it takes to get the killer shot; having a critical set of eyes looking for problem areas is always appreciated.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Dean: I wish I could tell you all about the many publications I’ve been featured in, but that isn’t the case. I’ve really not pursued major accomplishments, as the time it would take to put myself in that position isn’t really there right now. When I do retire and make photography my sole occupation, we’ll see if the drive and interest is there to investigate a more aggressive line with my photography. Personally, my most satisfying accomplishments have been the wonderful people I’ve met over the years doing what I love to do. Some of them have become life-long…best friends.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot Urban Fashion? Dean: The same advise I got from my mentor which was, put in the time to shoot as much as you can…be happy with ten percent of what you do…and learn from the ninety percent that isn’t so good.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for new models or those wishing to brake to the business? Dean: I guess…don’t be afraid to try something new. There’s a ton of models that look pretty and have a great body or face; it’s that one unique and different quality that catches people’s eyes. I would also have to say that a model that moves, poses creatively, and changes up their facial expressions without direction are golden to a photographer like me.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Dean: I’m a fantastic grandfather to my one and only granddaughter, Addison ?

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Dean: I guess the only other thing that comes to mind is that I believe I possess a strong desire to get the ‘shot.’ Inheriting my father’s perfectionist personality definitely drives me to work as hard as I can to provide my clients with the images they’ll be happy with.

Let’s get started Ron! Tell me about your background. How did you get started in Photography? Ron: My roots in photography go back to my youth. My father was a part-time professional photographer who inspired me with his love for photography and the amazing ability of the camera to capture the beauty of the world. We had a full professional darkroom in the San Francisco home that I grew up in, literally steps away from my bedroom. Starting in my early teens, I began working in the darkroom with my father, learning both film developing and printing. We also had a small studio and lighting setup where I began to learn the artistic power of light.

As a teenager and through my years of college and grad school, my cameras were never far from my side, often shooting portraits, glamour concepts, and reflecting my love for the outdoors through landscape work. I took numerous photography courses during my years of school, and even was invited to attend a Yosemite workshop with the late, great Ansel Adams when I was a teenager. I also spent many years working in San Francisco photography stores to help support myself while attending high school and later my attendance at UC Berkeley.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Ron: The glamour and beauty genres reflect my appreciation for the beauty of women and the never-ending challenge of working with different personalities, human forms, and the lighting challenges to create memorable art.

My roots in photography really began with shooting landscapes, and even today, I’ve always got at least one camera and a bunch of lenses with me on every trip I take… never knowing if I’ll be there to capture a unique sunset, rushing white-water on a river, or some other magnificent occurrence of nature. As a result, I always try to bring that passion for the outdoors to my work in the glamour and beauty genres. I much prefer to shoot onsite, whether it is out among nature, or at some intriguing, highly-textured setting. It inspires me to do my best work. While many prefer the static, controlled environment of a studio, I seem to rise to the challenges of shooting in a more dynamic environment. The ever-changing light conditions make me a better photographer, as I am constantly adapting, improvising, and learning to use these conditions to my advantage. In the end, it is my hope that the model and I end up with images that are artfully conceived, well executed technically, and visually intriguing… images that standout from the norm of the genre.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Ron: I am inspired by the challenge to constantly improve my skills and to shoot visually stimulating images in visually stimulating settings. Often, the more challenging the shoot, the more engaged I become, and the more I am inspired to produce my best work. I am also inspired when I work with models who are engaging and creative, who contribute to what should be a collaborative process during our planning and the actual shoot. Hmmm… I bet I sound like I’m just a bit “Type A”. LOL. I guess that I’ve got to admit that I am!

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Ron: I am very fortunate, and yet find myself sometimes unfulfilled by the fact that photography is not my primary source of income. The positive aspect is that I’m not confined by the demands of producing an income from my photographic work to a level that would keep me living the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed. On the other hand, I don’t get a chance to work fulltime living one of my life’s greatest passions.

I would not change anything about the industry, but might change the road I traveled down in my life where I took that heavily academic route through UC Berkeley, law school, and then getting an MBA. I clearly succumbed to parental pressures and expectations to become successful in their eyes, yet not always in synch with my inner desires. I learned a life lesson in the process… that the greatest happiness in life comes from finding a way to live your passions.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer within the modeling industry, to capture your “best shot”? Ron: I tend to be a bit o f a minimalist in my approach to shooting models. Since I primarily shoot onsite, I am usually working with some element of natural light. The key is to understand the light and work to compliment it in the creation of my desired art. So, my most essential equipment is probably my hand-held Sekonic flash meter! Beyond that, I’m almost always shooting with at least one primary light, and often two additional lights to achieve the desired highlights and mood. I tend to use a wide range of light modifiers to tailor the light appropriately for the desired result. I also would never underestimate the importance of purchasing the best quality lenses one can afford. I cherish my investment in optics, and view my lenses as being essential to creating quality work.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Ron: I always am looking for paid assignments that are challenging and aligned to my artistic interests, however I am very open to TF shoots with high quality models that bring the same level of professionalism to their work as I commit to bring to mine.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Ron: I am a perfectionist at heart, yet try not to let that get in the way of my creative energies. I am easy going and have a good sense of humor, yet I’m highly detailed in my approach to photography and my relationship with models. I would rather err on the side of discussing a shoot in too much detail, rather than later find that there was insufficient detail resulting in some sort of misunderstanding. One of the early life lessons that my father taught me is that, “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” This has shaped many aspects of my life and my photography. I always give everything I undertake my best effort. I may not succeed, but I always know I tried my hardest. By the way, I ALWAYS try to have a good time during a photo shoot, and to make sure that the model does, too!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Ron: I am always striving to improve, to learn from the best in this business, and to be inspired by others. I am a voracious reader of photography books, and photographic websites, as well as attending workshops with some of the best photographers in the world when the opportunity presents itself. I guess one could say I’m on a life-long quest to be the best that I can be and to always challenge myself to learn. I hope that I am able to make photography an ever-increasing commercial aspect of my life, and that I can earn enough from my professional photographic work to reduce my need to work in the other professional areas of my life.

Other goals… to be the best person I can be; the best life partner to my beautiful wife; and the best father I can be to my two incredible sons. They are the true centers of my being.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Ron: I expect that everyone that I work with brings their “A game” to their work. I can’t ask anything more of anyone other than to give their very best to every endeavor they undertake, including shooting with me.

I have very little tolerance for people who don’t respect my time, or the time of others. This industry is unfortunately full of models, stylists, and I’m sure “photographers” who cancel at the last moment, don’t show up on time, or think its ok to turn a shoot into a social outing with girlfriends or boyfriends. I cherish the time I have to create my art. I show up on-time and ready to shoot and I expect the same of other professionals.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Ron: Clearly my biggest accomplishment in my life is being an involved and committed father of my two sons who I am so very proud of.

In the realm of photography, I view accomplishments in terms of goals that I set for myself, and my ability to execute the vision that I have in my mind for a given image.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot with models? Ron: Well, it seems like so many new, amateur photographers want to shoot “glamour”. I use that term loosely because it seems that simply shooting a woman nude is considered “glamour” photography by so many. In my view, the most important sexual organ is the mind, thus the real art to glamour photography is to shoot images that stimulate the mind, often leaving something to the imagination or offering a unique perspective on the subject. It is so much more difficult to do this well, and so much easier to merely shoot someone without their clothes on. So, my advice is never to lose sight of what is “art”, and to never convince yourself that a mere snapshot of someone with their clothes off is worthy of being defined as art. I’m sure that comment will offend some readers. Oh well!

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Ron: I always recommend that models are realistic about their careers and that they maintain a broad perspective on their goals for their lives. Long after the beauty of their youth begins to fade, they will need to have an education and career that can carry them passionately through the balance of their lives. Most importantly, act professionally, and do what you say you’re going to do. I often find myself becoming a long term friend with the models that I shoot , and often find myself in the role of coaching them on the broader aspects of life… whether it’s about modeling, staying in school, their other jobs, or sometimes how to handle a renegade boyfriend! LOL.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Ron: I’ve always been an avid sports enthusiast… from skiing, running, cycling… to golf. In my college days, I ran ski programs and worked as a ski instructor. I’ve even had the opportunity to heli-ski in the Canadian Bugaboo Mountains. Last fall, I cycled for a week through much of the French wine country, travelling up and down rolling and sometimes steep terrain to reach scenic villages. I also have played golf since I was 12 years of age and have often dipped into the single-digit handicap range when I have sustained time to play. I guess you could say I’m a bit of a jock, in addition to being a photographer!

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Ron: Well, what you see is what you get with me. I don’t have time in my busy life for pretense or interaction with others on a less than honest basis. I find that I can sleep soundly at night by knowing that my integrity has been preserved.

Chuck: Well, I started taking pictures as an enthusiast back in 1991. At that time, 35mm was the most popular trend for non-pros and many pros alike so I jumped in with both feet! I was self taught, learning by reading photography books and through trial and error. I burned through a LOT of film!!! I would take pictures of friends, events, stills, animals, etc.; just about anything I could to learn how cameras worked. I learned all of the “technical” aspects of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. As my interest and skill level grew, I started taking pictures of friends and family weddings in 1996, then started dabbling into fashion and glamour in 2003 doing a few fashion shoots. In 2005, I shifted to digital and purchased my first DSLR and haven’t looked back since. Every once in a while, for nostalgia’s sake, I will whip out the 35mm and click off some shots. I continued working in wedding and in the fashion and glamour genres and here we are in 2009.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you?

Chuck: In addition to glamour work, I have an interest in wedding, commercial, and portrait photography. Generally speaking, I like wedding photography – A LOT, but I have a passion for fashion and glamour work because in a lot of ways, I can be more creative and have more flexibility afforded by working with other industry professionals and themes.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer?

Chuck: I have different influences for different photography genres. To name a few, in the fine art realm, Mr. Brian Perkins has been a mentor and role model for me. He was the first photographer to REALLY help me fine tune my craft and REALLY kick my photo editing skills up in a MAJOR way. I think the work of Ansel Adams has also inspired me; not so much by the subject of most of his classic works (nature, landscapes, etc.), but because of his influence in photography in general and how friggin’ AWESOME he was!!! He showed us all what it means to be the BEST in whatever it is you do in this art form. Whether you shoot people, birds, commercial products, etc., your creativity and expertise shows through the lens. The difference between a snapshot and a masterpiece is HUGE, but the subtle nuances involved in GETTING there are so fine, so small, so seemingly insignificant that it takes YEARS to master them. His thoughts on improving images in the dark room through dodging and burning, etc., have led to many of the same techniques in today’s “digitial darkroom” technology using photo editing software.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could?

Chuck: Time is my greatest challenge. I simply do not have enough time to put into photography at the level I’d like. Another challenge is that “who you know” dilemma that exists in photography (and everything else, for that matter). A lot of times, opportunities come down to who you know, not necessarily the talent or ability of the photographer. But this is the reality of just about everything in life so it is, what it is…

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Chuck: A good DSLR (I prefer Nikon), good lighting equipment (or using reflectors for natural light), and good glass (lenses)!

Chuck: Paid gigs are, of course, best. But, from time to time, I do TFCD work to experiment and capture something new. Doing TFCD work also allows me to keep busy and maintain my skill level when business slows down (photography is a perishable skill so use it or lose it…). I turn down a lot of TFCD requests simply due to lack of time; not that I want to be mean or think I am above, I just don’t have time to do it.

Chuck: I try to infuse glamour with my own creativity and vision. I can edit my images “cleanly” (with little or no photo editing) or I can apply some pretty funky and complex photo editing techniques to make them look artistic and different. I try not to get pigeonholed into any one thing so that my images are diverse, sexy, creative, and aesthetically pleasing.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for Tampa Bay Glamour?

Chuck: Not sure yet. Still working on that one…LOL

But one thing is that I want TBG to expand. I don’t want it just to be me – I want it to be a collaborative effort among several photogs in the Tampa Bay area.

GlamModelz Magazine: I enjoyed your article regarding Managing a photo shoot – In summary, what elements do you feel should be present to make for a successful shoot?

Chuck: communication, communication, communication!!! LOL

Chuck: Not sure yet on this one either… This is a work in progress!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?

Chuck: One thing I see a LOT of amateurs do is they shoot with flash directly on their models creating harsh, unattractive shadows. DO NOT DO THIS!!! The trick is to bounce flash indoors and if you cannot bounce this (like when outdoors or with high or off color ceilings indoors), use diffuse, soft light with a reflector or light diffusing equipment (like a softbox). Start doing it this way, and start seeing MARKED improvement in the quality of your images!!!

Chuck: Nothing of note. I wish I did, but right now, I am sticking close to home to finish a number of things I have in the hopper…LOL

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?

Chuck: I am a people person. I am a communicator. I know how to manage people and processes. That is what I do…

Bill Richards of Okie Studios is our first winning Photographer of the GlamGurls Competition (Photographers Category). Bill’s work is original, unique and full of life and we we’re so intrigued here at GlamModelz Magazine, we just . We look forward to a long association with Bill and Okie Studios.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started Bill! So tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Bill: It all started back in Michigan when I was around fiveish, my father dabbled in fine art photography and took home an award at the Delton, Michigan free fair. In my mind this was huge, take it in mind Delton had a population on 3,000 and I was 5.

The beginning of my photography started in 8th grade, I was blessed with a high school that actually had a photography program and got to experiment at a young age. After a long break in the military I got back to school at the University of Oklahoma and took photography there, and picked up a job at the local paper as graphic artist/ photo editor/ photographer.

After a few years of work, I realized that taking pictures of rich people handing huge checks to different charities was not my cup of tea. Shooting sports was fun but that was about it.

In late 2006 I decided to try my hand at glamour photography and I have loved it ever sense.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Bill: I was a fine art major at OU and glamour/beauty and a splash of creativity and color and I finally found what I liked to do. Everyone I know explored some dark and evil mind set, and me coming from a background of being in the Military and seeing that first hand I decided I would rather live on the bright colorful side of life and push that as my craft.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Bill: You have to give it up to Julia Margaret Cameron she is credited for expanding photography and taking fine art portraits back in the mid 1800’s, her style is style mimicked today. Ansel Adams always comes up because he is a master of the landscapes. I love life and capturing it, makes me a keeper of moments in time.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Bill: Living in Oklahoma is great, but as the industry goes, unless you want to be a wedding photographer or take senior pictures, there is not a lot of business out here.

I would take the epicenters of glamour and fine art photography out of the big cities and expand it to the smaller towns, we live in a digital world why not.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Bill: Light, being that’s what photography truly is “the capture of light” and the manipulation of set light. A keen eye, knowing what angel looks good and what doesn’t even the most beautiful women in the world have bad angels. A friendly environment, I have a lot of repeat business because I make it fun, safe and enjoyable.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Bill: By all means who doesn’t like to get paid, but the good thing about tf’s is that you get to be more creative and do your own ideals.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Bill: I love vibrant colors, I love when eyes pop out of the picture. I love when you look at the picture and it makes you think, wow. I like the happier side of life and capturing that. There are enough doom lovers out their, and I like there art, but I’m on the other side of the spectrum.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Bill: I would like to be published more. I have had a few covers on magazines, I’m currently getting published in a tattoo book soon to be out and I have been in the newspaper tons of times. I would love to have a worldwide monthly magazine pick me up as staff photographer and let me have a page just for my random shoots and themes.

My life is good, I work at my favorite bar “The Deli” live music 7 days a week as a bartender. So with music and art all around me I’m pretty happy. I would like to move into a bigger studio that is separate from where I live.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Bill: The main thing is listening and comprehension. When I tell them my ideals and thoughts about the shoot and what I’m going for, that there on the same page. And with 2 or more creative minds together come up with something extraordinary.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Bill: As photography goes, I guess the book I’m getting ready to be published in. I think they’re using at least 5 shots of mine. The cover of a British tattoo magazine was very nice too.

GlamModelz Magazine:What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Bill: Set your ego to the side; don’t think because you did this one thing, that you are now the most wanted commodity. Do it because you love it, money will come.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Bill: When you’re looking on building your portfolio, relies sometimes it’s worth getting a pro to shoot with. One good photo could get you notice and get your whole career going.

Come with a can do attitude, especially when it’s a tf deal, and it’s all about the details so do your nails, hair and makeup.

Before you shoot, know what you’re getting out of the deal. I hear horror stories about tf shoots, that the model doesn’t even see a photo. Talk to other models who have worked with them and check there references to make sure there safe or not.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Bill: As a bartender I sling drinks with the best of them, I’m a avid web designer. And the biggest thing, I am a Coed C-League Softball god.. lol but true.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Bill: I’m very laid back, after serving in the military and doing what I did I realized that nothing is life threatening so why not just enjoy the ride, I take that attitude with me everywhere especially photography the worst thing that is ever going to happen at a photo shoot is that no photos are going to come out. No one is going to keel over or die, so relax and have a good time.

Let’s take a look behind the lens and meet one of GlamModelz Magazine’s Contributing Photographers, Jeff Benham of Visions East Photography.

GlamModelz Mag Editor Jett Ray:

Jeff Benham of Visions East Photography: I photograph people, places and things. You don’t develop it, you photograph it. Every individual has a different way of looking at something. I walk in a frame all day long, always framing in my own mind just about everything I see. I have been doing this for years.

Jeff: I was 17…I was not what you call your average student, to say the least. My idea of school was to walk in the front door and continue out the back to go get a coffee at Dunkin Donuts. So in my second junior year, I was asked to join this alternative program for intelligent – but lets say “preoccupied” – students. One of the classes offered was photography. I became very close friends with the teacher and in turn she took me under her wing and for me there was no looking back. I had found something I just loved to do. First it was the darkroom. Yes, I actually enjoyed working in it. Ask me to do it now…I’ll tell you to buy yourself a copy of CS3, thank you very much.

Jett:What other genres of photography interest you? Why do you primarily shoot Glamour and Beauty?

Jeff: Personally, I think all fashion and glamour photographers need to have their heads examined. Old barns, waterfalls, covered bridges, mountains, lakes etc have yet to ask me, “are my photos ready yet?”.. When was the last time a tree told you it looked fat? I shoot Glam because of the challenge and because I love to photograph people. How many times have you heard some one say after putting down this months copy of Playboy .. “Man, I want that guys job.” My saying is, it’s a tough job yet someone has to do it. People take that as a joke, trust me it’s no joke. I have never worked harder in my life. Yet it’s a work of passion and for the love of what you do. It’s a challenging and ever-changing industry and once you think your on the top of your game your already 10 steps back.

Other genres, I shoot anything. Absolutely love landscapes and sports. Nothing better than zooming in on a 7 or 8 year old’s face after he scored his first touchdown. One of my favorite photos is of my son. They had just lost a hard fought playoff game. His coach had him in his arms and they each had a tear rolling off their cheek. I can only wish I had taken that photo but, I was the coach.

Jett: What or who inspires you as a photographer and in life?

Jeff: I’m inspired everyday by many other photographers. Were all artists in our own right. We all have different views and ways of doing things. Life is my inspiration. In life, well my Dad for sure. Treat folks the way you want to be treated. I live by that. Pretty simple and straight forward.

Jett:What would you change about fashion/glamour/beauty modeling and photography, if you could?

Jeff: Honestly why would I want to change it. This industry offers me everything I could ever want for the work that I do. I love it’s passion and it’s challenges.

Jett: What equipment/elements are essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?

Jeff: Most of us all have good solid equipment or we wouldn’t be doing what were doing and be successful at it. Camera, lenses, lighting etc. – most important to me is the model…new or experienced, does not matter. The willingness to work together to achieve that best shot, is what is most important.

Jeff: I shoot in a very simple atmosphere most studio sessions. I love filling the viewfinder with the model. It’s me, the camera, backdrop, lighting and the model. I make the model work.

Jett: Any other personal goals?

Jeff: To be a good husband, father and friend, everything else will fall in place.

Jeff: Be dedicated to your craft, be passionate about what you do and care about the people around you that believe in the same things. An old saying is there is no “I” in team.

Jett:Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.

Jett: What advice do you have for new or amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?

Jett:You have helped many aspiring models see and reach for their potential – what advice would you give those reading today about the industry in general?

Surround yourself with quality and do not settle for less. Remember photos last forever, so never compromise your own values and beliefs.

Jett:What is your favorite quote or mission statement?

Jeff: “Imagination is endless”

Beauty Editor Jett Ray: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to interview for the magazine Dave! We appreciate all you do and are so very proud of the work you have done for GlamModelz Magazine. I know there are many in the Glamour Photography industry who can benefit from your expertise, so let’s get started!

Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?

Dave Davis: I have always had an interest in Art. At the age of 12 my parents gave me my first 35mm SLR camera. We were living in Germany at the time and I had ample opportunity to use it, I shot a lot of landscapes and inanimate objects back in those days. I was first published at the age of 16, I shot sports for several news papers though high school and college. I majored in commercial photography/Art in college, and enjoy working as a commercial artist. It’s just part of my DNA and always has been, I guess.

Jett: Why Glamour /Beauty? What other genre’s and styles interest you?

Dave: I’m interested in all art forms, from the beauty of drops of dew glinting in the sun off a blade of grass to the complexities of a ballet. In short I enjoy all genres and forms of Art, not just photography. There is a more “mainstream, more commercial” side to me and my work. I’m happy and excited with the works you see here, but there are 2 Faces of Eve. I have a High Fashion, more blase style of work that is just starting to pop up. A model wrote me this morning and said. “I wanna to shoot something like this”, and she included a photograph I shot for one of the local modeling agency, I’m not even sure if she realizes I shot it..

Jett: What or who inspires you as a photographer?

Dave: There are so many great photographers and artists that have inspired me. All of the contributing photographers here on “GlamModelz.com”, Michael Rosen and Dr Gary, my old college professor, have made the biggest influence in my work and personal style. Music quite often inspires my creativity too.

Jett: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”?

Dave: Since 99% of my work is shot in the studio, I will say the Beauty Dish, (a special light) followed by a really great flash meter. I have a truck load of equipment including 12 cameras. They all serve a purpose and a means for creating Art, but they’re just simple tools. Photoshop is something I could not live without. Besides the equipment, I always bring an open mind and my imagination to a photoshoot.

Jett: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences?

Dave: Of course I shoot TFP, all of my personal projects are shot on a TFP basis. But I have been burned and abused by so many “wannabes” that I will no longer work with MUA or models I have not worked with in the past. I need to know my team can deliver. I do test for new talent all the time.

Jett: How would you best describe your personal style?

Dave: Bright, Vibrant, Full of Life, Fun and Expressive. Regardless of the subject and/or intended outcome I like to bring out emotions in my work. True Art invokes an emotional response. That’s the way I live my life, my life is what I hope my work represents.

Jett: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals?

Dave: My only real goal is the completion of my next shot. That is all I really concentrate on and that is all I really care about.

Jett: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?

Dave: I shoot portfolio updates for MUAs/Stylist a couple times a year. I wouldn’t mind shooting with more MUAs. It’s something I really enjoy – the collective meeting of creative minds. The shots are so well planned and thought out in every detail, it’s so exciting to our work come together..

Models: A professional attitude is also a must! I have learned my lesson the hard way, Now I only recruit Beauty models from previous shoots. For other projects I am open to new looks/models.

Jett: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud.

Dave: I have been truly blessed by the good Lord in my “professional” life. I’ve shot with a Playmate, movie stars, sports stars, rock stars. I’ve been published in National Geographic. I have done album covers, trade journals, cover shots on architectural and motor sports magazines, posters and so on. I’m even a staff photographer for a modeling agency in San Francisco. But I’m most proud of a single image. I searched so long for someone to model for this fantasy project and finally Rachel Anasteli – Actress, Model, Ms San Francisco, agreed to work with me on this piece titled Mother Nature. It took 400 hours create and was my first Fantasy Art project. I guess it will always hold a special place in my heart and so will Rachel. ~Thanks Dear!!

Jett: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour?

Dave: Be Professional, Respectful, and Original. Let your models know exactly what, when and how you will deliver the final edits, CDs, Prints, or what ever and then actually deliver! That seems to be the number one complaint I hear from models while chatting during a shoot.

Jett: Any advice for models?

Dave: 1.) Ladies Please, I never look at the webcam shots, most professional photographers do not. Leave them on MySpace, never include crappy photos on a pro modeling site.

2.) Communicate! Talk on the phone, text, e-mail, what ever the photographer prefers, be proactive, be professional. ALWAYS call if you can not make a shoot.

3.) Check references on the photographer first. Show up to the shoot on time and ready to work. Don’t bring your friends, This is not a party! A photoshoot is an intimate thing. The better connection you make with the Photographer the better the photographs will look.

Jett: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel?

Dave: I’m a workaholic and have full time careers as a Graphic Artist, Web Developer, Network Engineer (computer geek) and of course, as a Commercial Photographer. I love the diversity of my life but it does sometimes gets rather hectic.
