It is with great pleasure GlamModelz Magazine presents an interview with Lorain, Ohio’s, top glamour photographers: Dan Ketcham. Dan is quickly taking the Ohio’s glamour industry to new limits. Dan’s has a unique defines style all his own and GlamModelz Magazine is fortunate to be able to present this exclusive interview.
GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Dan: The photography bug really bit me when I was about 12 as starting shooting with film… and then throughout high school I kept going and did the nerd thing of being in yearbook and honing it all … but more or less was always trying to just capture the best pic and to bring out everyone’s personality. Photography then came back to me when I started my family with my beautiful wife. Restarted shooting landscapes and photos of motorcycles and then once we had our two children, now 8 and 6 I started doing portraits. By then, film was almost “dead” and so I started into digital. Now of course, I do all of my work digitally but still remember going back to day one shooting on BW film in a pentax k1000 and having to really learn the camera… lighting and getting the proper exposure. Still now shooting with my Nikon I shoot complete manual mode and work with lighting that makes me work… as I want this to be own.. and not be held down by technology or what the camera is telling me is “right”
GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty/Fashion? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Dan: Well, when I was growing up I of course looked into and upto the photographers who shot models and beauty work as I just loved how they captured emotion and then just the woman in general. There is just something really beautiful about a woman’s body.. and each one of them just unique. I love to work with many different woman. Glamour is a genre I love because then it brings down barriers…. it helps to take away distractions and the world around and centers on the subject … I love working with glamour models. It’s fun and exciting, that’s one reason for beauty and glamour style. Fashion is a world where I am starting to dig into and I like to. I hope to expand more there.
GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Dan: -This is a tough one… because really.. what doesn’t inspire? In my own photography … my emotion and style comes from really what I like personally. I am not trying to fit into any specific fads or shots specifically. As we all know fads change and I don’t want to really copy anyone and so I really try to take inspiration from everywhere… everyone .. and everything…
GlamModelz Magazine: What was your funniest experience shooting in the field? Dan: Umm.. Well not many funny moments so to say… But.. A recent shoot the model Abigail said.. “Nipples happen… ” I chuckled and said well … “Everyone’s got em!
GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Dan: -Biggest; that I am a male in a world now that anyone can go to a big box store and buy a “good camera.” Its actually quite sad on how this effects any of us
GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Dan: My “eye” … as many people know .. the camera is a great tool, but even as Ansel Adams said “The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.”
GlamModelz Magazine: What inspires and motivates you when selecting locations for a glamour shoot, over a fashion shoot? Dan: All that really depends on the subject and the outcome wanted… but… I really do try to keep it simple… and focus on the woman in front of the lens instead of distract the viewer with a whole bunch of stuff. And when its on location.. its has to compliment the model and their wardrobe or else.
GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals? Dan: -This year my goal was to get published .. and I’ve been honored to do that … they still aren’t huge buy on the rack magazines, but none the less.. I am proud of what I have accomplished. My goal though.. is really to keep pushing… not to get stale .. and to keep new ideas flowing and expand my breathe of photography.
GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Dan: Confidence is #1. It really is the sexiest thing anyone can wear.
Communication and Punctuality are high on my list too.
GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to model? Dan: *I believe you meant photographers who want to get into model photography… my answer is : Master the basics… get it right in the camera and do not rely on editing. Study.
GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to model? Dan: Do not settle for just anyone. IF you are starting out.. save up.. spend a few dollars and find a reputable photographer to work with.
GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Do you have any special charities you donate work for and why? Dan: As I said before I am a happily married man with two amazing children and then one of my other hobbies and passions in life is music and then being able to use those talents to praise God. For whom, without none of this is possible. I play drums and guitar in our contemporary church worship band.
GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Dan: -I might seem shy at first… but once you do get to know me even a little… watch out 🙂
