MUA/Stylist Article & Interview – Erica Lee
By Rick Trottier – RJT Images

One of the most fascinating things about creativity is it is often directly proportionate to personality. Quiet and introspective people tend to create deeply atmospheric work. Exciting and flamboyant people often author works of dramatic intensity. I met Erica Lee in the late winter of 2012 and was immediately struck by her intelligent but boldly energetic demeanor. The work she did for me that evening left an impression and it is beyond exciting to have this talented young person working creatively with me once more. Another first is these images of Danie Eastman. Danie worked with me on some “beauty inspired” jewelry shots in early 2010 that we did for a client. She and I have worked together for a long time, but this is our first foray into classic Beauty Imagery. So all in all, this couldn’t be a more wonderfully original opportunity for all of us.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell me a little about yourself like your background and a little of your history.   Erica: Well to start off I was born and raised in Plymouth, MA. I’m Cape Verdean and Portuguese descent. Ever since I can remember growing up I was always was into fashion. I can remember my room looking like a big collage. I would cut out pictures of clothing, makeup, celebrities, and anything else that would inspire me. I use to pretend to be a movie star and dress up. I would pretend to put makeup on, but the funny part was that my mother did not allow me to wear makeup until I was 18. So you could say I have a great mind for imagination. My mom was very strict with me as a little girl, but it helped along my journey while growing up. I thank her for always supporting me in what I do. Who would have known I would become an expert at applying makeup to bridesmaids, models, etc. I shocked myself the first time I covered up my cousin’s black eye with makeup and made it look perfect. That’s when I knew I had the talent of being a Makeup artist.

GlamModelz Magazine: What first got you interested in the artistry of makeup and hair design?   Erica:  My interest in makeup and hair design all started when I was about 10 years old, but not until I was about 17 years old did I started experiencing with makeup. I remember the first piece of makeup I owned was black eyeliner and clear mascara. I always had clear skin so when I would apply the eyeliner it just enhanced my look, so I thought (chuckles). I then received my first eye shadow pallet that had about 50 colors, from my grandmother as a Christmas gift one year. As far as hair design I wasn’t so fond of hair because growing up I had really thick hair and every two weeks my mother would take me to the hair dressers , because my hair was a lot to deal with. When I was about 21 my aunt had gave me my first short real hair cut, actually a bob cut. When I finally started to learn how to maintain my hair short hair cut, that’s when I started to experience with the styling and coloring of my hair.  I must have dyed my hair a million times. I would style some of my friends’ and family’s hair occasionally. I never went to school for it, but I learned the basics on how to make a person’s hair look good especially with a beautiful made up face. But I have to admit makeup artistry is my passion!

IMG_6722-DanieGlamModelz Magazine: You do both hair and makeup styling. Which would you say is your forte, or which do you prefer?   Erica: Yes, I do hair and makeup…but mostly makeup. I honestly prefer to do makeup more than anything. The hair styling is coming along. I’m not a professional but I’m learning new things every day. I have a lot of friends and family members who are hair dressers so any tips or ideas I need on how to complete a certain hair style, I can ask them. For any makeup artist or hair stylist starting out in the industry, I suggest you learn how to do both. It will be a great asset for your resume or portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get started working with models and photographers?   Erica: I first started working with models and photographers when I did my first fashion show for a friend at a nightclub. I remember I was so nervous thinking to myself I might not be good enough. The photographer at that time kept telling me that no matter what just be quick and keep moving. I then learned I knew how to work well under pressure. At the end of the show all the models along with the owner of the night club told me how great of a job I did. I remember he told me as I quote him “Erica, the models looked exquisite tonight. I’ve never seen such beautiful makeup done on somebody in such a short time.” I remember walking out that night club with a big smile on my face.

GlamModelz Magazine: What do you want models and photographers to know about working with you?  Erica:  I want everybody, not just models and photographers, to know that I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my work. I’m very easy to work with and I like to hear feed back on my work. I’m always open to ideas and I like to be different when creating a look. I also like a person who knows what they want or briefly an idea of what they want as far as a certain look or theme they are trying to create. They way I apply makeup actually gave me the idea for the name of my freelance makeup company, which is named Miss Erica-lee’s Flawless Image. I’ve been told they way I apply makeup has the person looking flawless. In the future I hope I’ll get to travel all over the country to share my talent with others.

IMG_6746-DanieGlamModelz Magazine: What would be your dream job if you got the chance to do it and why?   Erica:  Hmm…My dream job…well I’m living the dream now! I would like to be a Makeup Artist for celebrities. I would love to work with people like Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Oprah, Lady Gaga, and Madonna just to name a few. If I could land a job like that I would be the happiest women alive. I have a picture on my fire place of me doing makeup with a quote that says “Dreams can turn into reality.” I look at that picture everyday for motivation, along with the picture of my grandfather. The picture of my grandfather inspires me to never give up. My grandfather was such a hard working man. He always told me I can do whatever I want as long as I don’t give up and work hard. God Bless his soul. I know he is up in Heaven smiling down on me.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you had your way, what are the craziest materials you would use for a makeup look?   Erica: If I had it my way I would definitely use real diamonds, Swarovski crystals, and lace for a look. I know it would probably cost me a lot for the diamonds, but diamonds are a girl’s best friend. (Laughing). I would promise to create a look like never before…I can imagine it now. I would call the look “Lace of Diamond in a Crystal Dream.”

GlamModelz Magazine: What was the most bizarre request for makeup artistry you’ve received so far?  Erica:  The most bizarre request I received was to do makeup for a drag queen fashion show. I thought it was definitely bizarre at the time, but me being the person I am, I don’t discriminate. I’m always willing to try something different and new. I now see that Drag is becoming big in the entertainment world…big ups to Ru Paul.

GlamModelz Magazine: When you’re not making people look their very best, what can we find you doing?   Erica:  I like to spend time with my family and friends or go out for a night on the town. I also work in the Emergency Room in a well-known hospital for the city of Boston. So, I always keep myself busy regardless.

IMG_6767-DanieGlamModelz Magazine: What does the future have in store for you?  Erica: The future has a lot in store for me! After this interview hopefully more people will recognize my works of art and request for me to come and work for them. I just want to say that I’m very thankful to be featured in GlamModelz magazine. Thank you for having me. I’m always looking for new clients.

A Good Review of the New Nikon D3400 DSLR Camera

By Jeremy Bayston  |   Submitted On March 13, 2017   The Nikon D3400 is aimed primarily at people who want to learn about photography and are moving up from bridge cameras or compact cameras or coming straight in from having taken up photography with their mobile phones.
