In today’s glamour industry, there is one single factor that is of great importance to the photographer and model alike – the expert application of makeup.

Kerry Kaoru - Glam MUA

Glamour MUA – Kerry Kaoru

This necessary component to a successful shoot is the forte of a talented and skillfull make-up artist I had the opportunity to interview upon her return from Tokyo, Japan – Hollywood Glamour and Film MUA, Kerry Kaoru!

Jett Ray: Tell me about your background – how did you get started as a MUA?Glam MUA – Kerry Kaoru: I am a Japanese native who came to the US hoping to become a MUA. I think I have a unique style. I do from beauty / glamour makeup to special effects, including drag and monsters and have knowledge in prosthetic and latex applications.I am involved in entertainment business in many ways and am also fluently bilingual. :) I started doing makeup in high school when I was involved with high school theaters.

Jett: Where did you receive your training?
Kerry: I studied makeup mostly on my own. I also studied under some professionals and went to a makeup school called ‘Joe Blasco’ in Hollywood.Model: Aleccia - Photographer: Dave Davis

Jett: What or Who inspires you?
Kerry: People with good energy. I can get my artistic inspiration from anything though.

Jett: What project are you most proud of?
Kerry: I made my mother look 15 years younger. She was so happy. Personally that was the biggest reward I ever got.

Jett: What types of special techniques do you use?
Kerry: I try to work with whatever I’ve got. I have all the magic tools in my makeup box.

Jett: What advice do you have for a new MUA?
Kerry: Always be patient and flexible with your ideas. That’s always important when you have to deal with divas :)
Jett: That’s excellent advice…Any advice for a glamour/beauty model regarding working with a MUA?
Kerry: Trust the MUA and be open to whatever they have to offer.
Jett: What are your goals for your career as a Makeup Artist?
Kerry: To be involved with as many fashion and film projects as I can.

Jett: What style do you like working with most?Model: Heather
Kerry: I enjoy doing absolutely everything! From small weddings to big Special FX film projects!

Jett: Where are you located?
Kerry: Los Angeles. Sometimes in Tokyo, Japan.
Jett: Do you have other special talents or interests?
Kerry: I enjoy modeling, dancing and bartending, but makeup is my main job.

Jett: Where can we see more of your work?

Jett: Do you have any special or secret makeup tips you’d like to share?:
Kerry: As for tips…Did you know you can re-use the dried up mascaras by dropping a couple of eye drops in?
That’s a great tip!! I think models and MUA’s everywhere will appreciate that one. Who doesn’t get frustrated with dried-out mascara? Thanks Kerry!
