A Day of Beauty Imagery.
By Rick Trottier – RJT Images

Beauty Imagery has been a new interest of mine due to the unique challenges that it offers. While I have created “portraits” in the form of headshots all through my career, the allure of “The Beauty Shot”, highlighting creative use of makeup artistry and hairstyling has caught my attention over the past year. Unlike full body portraits, or even ¾ shots, a headshot incorporating the artistry of all the finest talents of an MUA/Stylist presents some fascinating trials. Lighting must be rethought. In most glamor imagery, heavy shadows can often be ignored as irrelevant, but they can sometimes add dramatic impact. In the Beauty Shot, too many shadows can detract from the splendor of the colors, textures and geometry of the artistry. As a result, the lighting scheme must split the difference and illuminate all of the elements needing attention while still managing to create depth, intricacy and complexity. Flat lighting is BAD, but under-lighting is just as undesirable. There is also “the pose” to consider. While typical glamor and fashion imagery depends on a strong pose, the Beauty Shot has to be sculpted to a nicety. Angles, turns and twists must all draw attention to the makeup and hairstyling, while all the time keeping in mind the physiognomy of the model and her personal strengths and weaknesses. Bringing hands to the face can help draw the eye to elements that need emphasis, but too busy a palette can detract from the overall outcome. Then there is the framing and cropping of the imager. Unlike a “body shot”, a Beauty Shot needs a specialized frame and crop to marry with all the afore-mentioned steps and stages. The Beauty Shot is like The Middle Game of a Chess Match where A LOT is going on and one wrong move can mean disaster. That kind of pressure is stressful, but it is a good kind of stress and the reward is a timeless kind of beauty hearkening back to the days of The Great Portrait painters of a Bygone Age. To have a photograph receive that kind of praise is something we all dream of.

A New Experience for All of Us.
By Rachel Seeker

IMG_5408-RachelWhat a new experience this photo shoot had been for me.  I’ve done countless shoots with different styles and themes, but this one was unique in its own way.  By that I mean it was fun, interesting, and different, but also time-consuming and a lot of work for everyone involved.  Doing make-up for a general photo shoot is time consuming on its own, but this shoot was much more so since the hair and make-up was quite extravagant.

My job was pretty easy. I got to sit in the chair and relax; poor Hannah on the other hand stood for hours doing and re-doing my hair and makeup.  She was such a trooper, did an excellent job and was fun to chat with; which is a good thing, because it would have sucked to work that close with someone for hours if they were miserable.  She was wonderful.

Rick and I have shot together numerous times and usually we focus more on full body shots with a few head shots here and there; so this was a different shoot for us in that it was all tight head shots with completely different hand placement.  This part for me was also somewhat easier since I was able to sit during the shoot and not have to worry about flexing certain muscles and doing crazy poses that would give me pain the next day. Haha. For Rick, who is used to shoots only lasting a short time, he had to be extra patient. We did many different make-up and hair changes that took some time.  That being said, he was also a trooper.

Overall, although it was a lot of work for all of us, we got great results and had a good time collaborating together. It was totally worth it!

MUA/Stylist Article & Interview – Hannah Chevrette

IMG_5427-RachelOne of the joys of being a veteran in The Industry is the opportunity to be thoroughly impressed by talented youth and newcomers who show so much promise. Such is the case with Hannah Chevrette of Concord, NH. Hannah first worked with me in March and I was so captivated by her work, I knew I had to bring her back for some other projects. This GlamModelz interview and Image Gallery is her first publication. Another first is these images of Rachel Seeker. We have worked together for a long time, but this is our first foray into Beauty Imagery. So all in all, this couldn’t be a more wonderfully original opportunity for all of us.

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell me a little about yourselfHannah: Well I’m 20, I just graduated beauty school in October 2011 and got licensed the same month. I went to Empire Beauty School in Laconia NH and loved it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What first got you interested in the artistry of makeup and hair design?  Hannah: I always knew I wanted to do something I could have freedom to be creative and have fun. Cosmetology just opened up a whole new world of creative ideas and opportunities for me. My aunt and grandmother are also hairdressers and I used to love to watch them cut hair and I was just fascinated by it.  I didn’t really get into to makeup until after cosmetology school and I was just testing things out and ended up loving it.

GlamModelz Magazine: You do both hair and makeup styling. Which would you say is your forte, or which do you prefer? Hannah: It’s a really tough choice, but I think I would have to say hair because coloring hair is my favorite thing to do.

IMG_5465-Image-for-Cover-CropGlamModelz Magazine: How did you get started working with models and photographers?  Hannah: My friend April is a model and brought me along to do her hair and makeup in a photoshoot with Rick. It was an amazing experience and I loved it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What can models and photographers expect in working with you and the team? Hannah: I’m always looking to learn something new. And I always try my best to give photographers and models the looks that they’re looking for I do my best to listen to what they want and deliver accordingly.

GlamModelz Magazine: What would be your dream gig if you got the chance to do it?  Hannah: I honestly think that doing hair and makeup for photoshoots is amazing and more than I could ever have imagined myself doing when I was in school; I really love doing it and having the chance to be creative and have fun. It’s an incredible opportunity. Owning my own salon someday would be pretty neat too.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are the craziest materials you have used for a design?   Hannah: Garbage bags. When I was in beauty school we had an “Iron Stylist” challenge to choose two girls to be the bride and one to be the groom. We then had to make outfits out of black and white garbage bags while also getting their hair and makeup done and making one girl look like a man. It was such a fun challenge and you really got to see some creative ideas.

GlamModelz Magazine: What was the most bizarre request for makeup artistry you’ve received so far?    Hannah: I can honestly say that I have not yet received a bizarre request for makeup yet.

IMG_5485-Rachel

GlamModelz Magazine: When you’re not making people beautiful, what can we find you doing?   Hannah: Working full time in retail and spending time with my family.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your personal goals?   Hannah: I hope to maybe travel doing hair and makeup for photo shoots. And one day once I settle down and maybe have children, own my own salon.

A Good Review of the New Nikon D3400 DSLR Camera

By Jeremy Bayston  |   Submitted On March 13, 2017   The Nikon D3400 is aimed primarily at people who want to learn about photography and are moving up from bridge cameras or compact cameras or coming straight in from having taken up photography with their mobile phones.
