We are so pleased to announce our guest photographer: Keith Foster Photography. Keith Foster, of Kansas City, MO. has a very creative eye and a unique style all his own for art, beauty,  fashion and glamour, with a bright and vibrant artistic twist.
Keith-Foster-coverGlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started! Tell me about your background… how did you get started in Photography? Keith Foster: I have been taking pictures almost all of my life, but I really began to learn and study photography several years ago when I began my battle with cancer. I had to find something to keep me challenged and busy, and photography became that outlet.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty/Fashion? What other genre’s and styles interest you? Keith Foster: Glamour, Beauty and Fashion were the genre’s I gravitated to for several reasons. I have always been good at meeting new people, and I can carry on a conversation with almost anyone. In addition, I quickly found I liked working in a studio. Learning to control the light and also being able to adjust the thermostat depending on the weather were big sellers for me. 🙂 Those genres really lend themselves to working in a studio.

Every genre of photography fascinates me. It amazes me how much there is to learn when you try a new genre. Even when you feel like you are pretty good at one genre when you try another, there are so many tricks, tips and things to know to become competent in other genres. I feel as though you could spend a lifetime learning and never become a master of more than a few of the genres.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Keith Foster: Sam Rambo is my role model. I was able to connect with Sam via a photography forum when I first started trying to shoot glamour. Sam had written several threads on the website that explained how he does what he does.   Sam was doing things that many mainstream photographers were saying were against the rules. He was using his big gold reflector when everyone else was saying that gold reflectors didn’t work on models. I admired that he was breaking the rules and at the same time creating impressive images. In addition, Sam was willing to give me critique on the shots when I was trying to learn. His feedback always had positives and ideas for improving. I also admire how Sam developed a great reputation as a person who was fun to work with and as a “stand up” guy. When people work with Sam, they know he is there for the photography and the art. I wanted to have that same reputation and have seen a huge return based on that reputation.

GlamModelz Magazine: What was your funniest experience shooting in the field? Keith Foster: I was shooting with a model while I sat on the top step of a 10-foot step ladder. You know the last step where it says “DO NOT SIT OR STAND ON THIS STEP”? Apparently they know what they are talking about since after a few shots I noticed the ladder was starting to move. I had set one of the legs on uneven ground and with me on the top step it began to fall right toward the model. At first she was kind of reaching up to stop it, but it was too late for that. She moved out of the way just in time, and I hit the ground rolling. I was tucked up into a ball to protect my camera and didn’t even think about trying to break my fall. After the model found out I was not hurt, she made fun of me the rest of the day for worrying more about my camera than I did about myself.   I am a lot more careful about how I set up ladders after that, but I guess I am a slow learner because sometimes I still sit on that top step.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? What would you change about it, if you could? Keith Foster: I would say one of the biggest challenges photographers face in trying to make photography their only income is the lowered expectations of a large segment of the market. Businesses with a small budget were still pretty good customers 10 years ago.   The explosion of technology is such that everyone has at least one camera on them at any time. There are cell phone pictures and video of almost everything that happens. Social media has enabled us to share those pictures, and technology has made taking a picture so easy. People are inundated with cell phone pictures every day. The cell phone photo has become the standard by which some people judge all photos.   It seems there is almost an “it’s good enough” attitude that has become pervasive, and fewer people see the value of high quality photography. In order for a photographer to make a living with their photography, they need to find a way to set themselves apart. You have to be able to show clients the difference a quality image can make and demonstrate there is value that will add to the client’s bottom line.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Keith Foster: My lights. I do most of my work in the studio. The ability to consistently create quality light is the difference between a good shot and a “wall hanger”.

GlamModelz Magazine: What inspires and motivates you when selecting locations for a glamour shoot, over a fashion shoot? Keith Foster: For glamour shoots, I almost always prefer working in the studio or a private location. As a glamour photographer, I need to create an environment that is safe and comfortable so the model can be completely focused on what we are trying to create and not whether a stranger will walk into the room.

Fashion shots are a different dynamic.   I might still shoot them in the studio, but if I am shooting on location, I want to have an environment that adds something to the shot. It is a tough line to walk between a background that adds tension to the shot and one that dominates the shot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Other goals?  Keith Foster: My goal every day is to be a better photographer today than I was yesterday.   There are so many talented and amazing photographers that create photos at a level that make me feel like a rank amateur. It would be easy to become discouraged and sell my camera if I compared myself to them.

My main goal is to be a good person. I want the world to be better because I was here and to have a positive influence on the people I have the opportunity to meet.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you?   Keith Foster: They need to be easy to work with and a positive part of the team. I don’t like drama. Please just show up ready to go to work, be respectful of everyone and do your best work every time.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to photograph models?   Keith Foster: Don’t try to use photography as your personal dating service. When you come on to models or try to make a photo shoot feel like a first date, you are establishing yourself as an amateur. A good reputation takes a lifetime to build and just a few minutes to destroy. Not only are you condemning yourself to permanent amateur status, but you are also perpetuating a stereotype of a GWC that hurts every photographer in the business. That is why many of us take so much offense to that guy. They are hurting everyone, including models.

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new models who want to model? Keith Foster: Modeling is very hard work, and it takes a lot of practice to be good. My advice is to study the genre of modeling you want to do and learn the poses. A good model knows how to pose and understands where the light is coming from. The creative director or photographer should be able to explain the mood and look they want, and the model can make it happen. Like any job, it takes time and practice to be good at it.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Do you have any special charities you donate work for and why? Keith Foster: I am pretty average at most everything else I do. I support just about any cancer research charity regardless of the type of cancer they are researching. If it is a children’s cancer research, I have a really hard time saying no. Having seen how devastating cancer and the treatment of cancer can have on a child and their family makes me want to do whatever I can to help find a cure.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Keith Foster: This year I am going to push myself as an artist and a photographer. I’m looking for projects that take me out of my comfort zone and force me to learn something new. It has already been a lot of fun. I’ve met some new people and had the chance to work with some amazingly talented people. It is a real adrenaline rush to take on something you haven’t tried before. There are so many new challenges out there, I could do something different at every shoot and not live long enough to try them all.
