GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started!  Sam tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography? Sam Rambo: Well I have been shooting for as long as I can remember, but mostly landscape…. I joined the Air Force in 1993 and I got out in 2004. I worked in Las Vegas for a top secret government contractor. I decided, that was not the life I wanted. I moved back to Washington State and took a job with the government, doing scientific research. Then in 2006 me and my wife adopted a 3 year old boy, and it changed the way I look at people.  A year or two after I reached a point I figured there had to be more to life. So I started looking into glamour/model photography. I met a wonderful photographer named Evan Moodie, he offered to teach me a style of glamour lighting and had an amazing model Lynnzie Cherelle fly in for our shoot, and well ever since then it has been a super fast ride, with some wonderful people.

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour /Beauty?  What other genre’s and styles interest you? Sam Rambo: There is just something about lighting up a woman’s curves with creative lighting in a way that just makes people take a second look, and that’s what I enjoy doing. I mean sometime even I have to step back look at the image and just say wow, I created that?  Well I have done a little this and that, but I keep coming back to edgy side of glamour, I think it’s just something I “get” and understand.

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you as a photographer? Sam Rambo: Inspiration is everywhere I look. Sometime I happen across a port that just wows me and I ask myself, how did they do that! Other times I look at stuff like my big gold reflector and think “how hot a model would look, with the right lighting in front of that!” So I call up one of my favorite models and tell them I have something I want to try…… and usually they are game to become part of my visions.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry?  What would you change about it, if you could? Sam Rambo: The biggest challenge I think most photographers face is the fact of making your work pay while still maintaining a sense of who you are. Another fact that I uses to face is, I was a man trying to shoot glamour. This is due to the fact that there a darker side of this industry. When you are starting off it’s not the easiest hurdle to over come, but like I say, treat the models as if they were your own daughter. If you keep a high level of standards about your shoots, then by the simple fact of word of mouth, your name will spread is this tight nit community!

GlamModelz Magazine: What is essential for you as a predominate studio glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Sam Rambo: This is a very simple one to answer, a good open minded model! I believe that a model who is serious about what she is doing makes all the difference in the world! When I come across a good model, like Shaunna, from my shoot today, it makes my job ten times easier!

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Sam Rambo: Honestly I believe that both have there place! If a model wants me to create her vision, or wants me to recreate one of my old series of images then no doubt, it should be paid. If a model is there to create my vision, I’m open to the idea of a TF* shoot. TF* is a great way to get your port established or updated……..but lets face it, at the end of the day, I can’t going down to the local TF store pick up the rolls of paper, supplies, expensive equipment, pricey software and experience needed to produce these type of images.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Sam Rambo: This is one I can answer with a few words, edgy, sexy, classy, oh yeah and edgy! I like to create that image that makes peoples jaws drop, if I can pull off a image using nothing but a model and a simple paper backdrop, then make you take a second look, mission accomplished!

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography?  Other goals? Sam Rambo: Well this where I state the obvious, I would love to end up doing paid shoots for a lot of the major magazines….. but with that being said, a better long term goal is to put out a book, a successful book, that is my life in photography, my visions, my art, and all the wonderful people I have shot. It would be nice to leave a little something behind that is 100% me.

GlamModelz Magazine: What type of person do you want to be know as? Sam Rambo: At the end of the day I want people to say, he was a good husband and dad, he was a fair and honest guy who had a true passion for everything he loved in life. Sam was Sam and it doesn’t get much better than that.

This is how I judge a successful shoot, if people walk away with a smile on there face, I did my job right!  I try to be me, and I don’t change for anyone.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should  Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc have to work with you? Sam Rambo: Ok this is one of my big things, I like to only work with people with good hearts, no divas allow through my door!  For models I like them to be about creating cool edgy ideas, very open minded. For MUA’s/Stylists well I have been fortunate to work with some of the best here in the northwest! Honestly I think I love the good conversations and their creativity the best!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Sam Rambo: Some would say…I have done tons of things in both my photography life, and my day to day work life……but I would have to say it was serving my country in the US Air Force for 10 years.  I’m one of those people who will never forget about all my brothers and sisters out there assuring we get a good nights sleep!  All of the fine men and women who gave there lives so we have the choice to live ours how we want! Amen to them all!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Sam Rambo: Look for people who’s work you respect, talk to them, ask them how, when, why, heck offer to meet them for coffee, you will find that there are a lot of good people out there! Second, buy the right equipment once, don’t go for the cheapest lighting you can find, invest in your future! Third, get on some photography forums, get involved. Forth, keep your name clean, treat you models with respect!  Fifth, network, network, network! Sixth and last, “the only rule in shooting is there is no rules”

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Sam Rambo: First, 1 or 2 great images from a good photographer is worth more than 20 ok images from a average photographer.  Second, invest in yourself, get a good MUA, get a good photographer, do what little travel you need to do, to shoot with the better people. Third, never get the “diva complex”  that will shut the door on opportunities you never knew existed. Forth, do your home work, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, ask around find out what type of person that photographer is.  Fifth, if it sounds to good to be true, more than likely it is. Treat your opportunities like you would when buying a home. do your research. Sixth and last, drive, you need the long term drive, if you think, just because you shot with someone great next week you will be famous, 99.99% of the time your wrong, the models that get ahead keep trying and going after it, your success depends on how much drive you have!

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other skills/interests/talents in which you excel? Sam Rambo: Well most people around me know that I’m sort of the jack of all trades, from remodeling my house, working on electronics, to tuning up my own car, I just do it, I figure it out and do it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other interesting facts would you like GlamModelz readers to know about you? Sam Rambo: I truly believe we should never stop learning, I think if you stop pushing yourself to improve with your next shoot, you should just call it a day and throw in the towel.  No matter what you are shooting, make the last set something different, something you have never done, push your limits!

Interview Questions For Ms. Christine Haynes

FWM: How did you create an interest in jewelry and designing?

C.H.: I grew up in a very creative home. My mother was a seamstress and my father was an excellent carpenter. I was literally allowed to draw and write on the walls of my bedroom! I was always working on arts and crafts, and playing in my mother’s jewelry box was a definite joy for me. Though I was always creative and my creativity was supported and nurtured by my parents. It was not until I was in college that I started to design jewelry. When a favorite necklace suddenly broke one day, I decided to try my hand at repairing it. From there the obsession was born! I started designing jewelry first for myself then I decided to sell. But during that time it was only to make extra money for school expenses and I never dreamed it would one day be my profession.

FWM: Your creativity is evident in your designs, where do you get your ideas for designs?

C.H.: My design process is actually very organic. I allow the gemstones to decide what they want to become. Oh that’s sounds so artsy! But it’s true! I never really sit down at my work table and say ok I am going to make this or that! I pull out the materials and gemstones I want to work with and just let the creation come to me, so every design is a surprise even to me!

FWM: What are your favorite pieces of jewelry to make?

C.H.: That’s like asking me to pick which child is my favorite! But I would have to say at this time I really enjoy making necklaces, especially the pieces in “The Bedrock Collection” the new collection is primarily large gemstone nuggets and I just love working with these bold and regal pieces.

FWM: How long have you been a designer?

C.H.: I have been a designer for over 10 years.

FWM: At this present time, what are your future business goals?

C.H.: Ultimately I want to have a private studio where I can sell my jewelry, meet with my clients, and host shows. Currently I am in discussions with a few boutiques that will hopefully carry Fezelry Jewelry. Additionally, I am planning more shows and events to introduce the public to Fezelry Jewelry Designs.

FWM: Tell us more about your personal background like other interests you are involved in?

C.H.: I actually became so obsessed with my love of gemstones that I went back to school. I graduated from the Gemological Institute of America. I am an Accredited Jewelry Professional and I have certifications in jewelry essentials, colored stones and diamonds. I am a freelance writer and have been a frequent contributor to several Jewelry industry publications; including Step by Step Wire Jewelry Magazine, and Beadstyle Magazine. I am also a contributing author featured in two recently released books on Jewelry design; Jewelry in a Flash and Easy Beading Vol. 6 published by Kalmbach Publishing. I am also a wife and mother of two, when I am not with my family, writing or designing jewelry I support a few select nonprofit organizations and, every now and then, I sleep!

FWM: Who are your clients and target audience?

C.H.: My clients vary from celebrities, local news anchors, models, designers, high powered business women, heads of major nonprofit organizations, and the women I like to refer to as my Divas. These are women of style that love unique and beautiful jewelry. My target audience is women of abstract taste that like quality and appreciate unique and original jewelry designs. Most of my clients want to be different and do not shop the mass produced jewelry market.

FWM: How well do your designs fit within the jewelry and designing industry?

C.H.: As well as any other and every day emerging to surpass. My particular market is referred to as the bridge jewelry market. It’s the area between costume and high end. However we have started to emerge and create a much larger following than expected. Some have referred to me as a celebrity jewelry designer or jewelry designer to the celebrities! That is very unusual for bridge jewelry! Fezelry Jewelry Designs is becoming recognized and positioning itself to become a brand design business.

FWM: Do you create pieces that a customer designs or gives ideas about?

C.H.: Yes, that is actually one of the favorite parts of my business! I accept custom order requests and I get quite a few of those.

FWM: Where can we see more of your work?

C.H.: The website www.fezelry.com. where the selection changes often and also at my Blog, www.fezelry.net; I often post my custom projects there. I am very excited because we are working on hosting a public trunk show in the near future.

FWM: Is jewelry designing a hobby that allows you to create one-of-a-kind designs that can be sold at a profit, or given as gifts to friends and family?

C.H.: For me, what began as a hobby ultimately became my passion and subsequently my life’s calling. The process of creating unique jewelry for my clients brings me great joy.

Jumping Rope

Jumping rope provides a number of health benefits: not only is it a great cardiovascular exercise that burns calories and fat, but it also develops good coordination between the hands and feet, as well as rhythm (muscle coordination). The greatest thing about jumping rope is that it is very inexpensive and you can do it almost anywhere.

Jumping rope has been proven to be a very effective method for burning fat. It has been shown to burn as many as 1,000 calories per hour. Wow, that is some serious caloric expenditure! Some of the best and leanest athletes swear by it. Movies often depict professional boxers skipping rope because it develops great cardiovascular endurance and stamina. It’s no wonder that boxers are some of the best-conditioned athletes.

Grab a jump rope and try it yourself!

Stand erect, but relaxed, when you jump.
Keep your knees slightly bent.
Look straight ahead, not at your feet.
Land on the balls of your feet, not on your heels.
Keep your arms fairly still, do not flail.

Start by jumping slowly, building up your speed so you can jump rope more quickly over time. See how many times you can jump without missing. Try to do 100 skips before you have to stop – then, beat that record the next time. Do 50 super fast jumps, followed by 50 slower jumps.

Jumping rope is great for the whole family. Have even more fun by getting some friends to play Double-Dutch. Jump rope for 30 minutes, five times a week, and watch your waistline shrink. Go invest in a jump rope today, and quickly get the body you want.

Jumping on a Trampoline

Jumping on a trampoline – yes, I said jumping on a trampoline – is a great workout. It not only develops excellent proprioception (body awareness), but it also burns a ton of fat and calories. And did you know that the rhythmic bouncing has a powerful effect on the lymphatic system, which builds a stronger immune system?

A trampoline provides exercise that are easy on the joints, very low in stress, and great for the body.

It’s easy to start a trampoline regimen. Buy a mini-trampoline for your living room and jump while watching your favorite TV show, or bounce to a trampoline workout video. For tons of family fun, buy a large trampoline for the backyard. Start jumping on your trampoline for 30 minutes a day and bounce away your pounds.

Outdoor Sprints

A Great workout: go outside and sprint as hard and fast as you possibly can. Once you feel like you’re going to collapse, stop; walk until you’re no longer huffing and puffing; then, sprint again. You might call this the ‘Forrest Gump’ Workout. Repeat as many times as you can, or until you complete a full 30 minutes of sprints and rest/walking.

This is a very intense workout, so you need a good level of fitness and conditioning before trying it. Sprint your butt off, walk until you catch your breath, then do it again. The harder you push yourself, combined with the faster and longer distance you run, the sooner you will get in shape and the more fat you will lose.

Outdoor sprints offer fat loss and a great body at no cost, so push harder than you ever have pushed before. If this sounds too difficult, consider the payoff. Any successful athlete will tell you they have put their bodies through this type of workout challenge.

If you are in good physical health, a sprint workout is extremely safe – so remember, just because you might feel like quitting doesn’t mean you have to. In other words, keep pushing and get your butt in shape, no whining, no complaining; just results, and a happy, more confident you.

Stadium Stairs

Running up stairs is a great no-cost, outdoor workout available at your local high school or college stadium. Sprint to the top of the stadium, then walk down the stairs. Remember, safety first! As soon as you get to the bottom, sprint back up to the top, and repeat.

This extremely high-intensity cardio program will burn fat quickly and send your heart rate through the roof. Sprinting stairs is a common exercise for all levels of athletes, and who among us doesn’t want the lean, muscular shape of an athlete? So stop complaining about not being able to afford the fancy equipment. Go to the stairs and run your butt off! You’ll get a tight, firm rear because you’ll lose that fat from your behind, and everywhere else, as you burn up the calories running up those stairs.

GlamModelz Magazine: Let’s get started!  Tell me about your background…how did you get started in Photography?

Mike: I actually picked up a camera for the first time a little over a year ago.  I was pretty much focused on people with the intention of portraits with a subtle twist of individuality that seems so lacking in the usual places.  I knew I wanted to shoot with people but didn’t know anybody or how to get started so I joined Model Mayhem and went to some local meet and greet events. With my wife’s encouragement I have continued to sharpen my skills, try new things, and learn more about the makeup and wardrobe styling. My wife gives me a hard time as the only guy she knows with a closet full of dresses and tutus. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

GlamModelz Magazine: Why Glamour and  Beauty? Mike: It has happened quite by accident although not unexpectedly.  I started out doing portraits but with each successive shoot the style became more and more glamour and fashion oriented. I liked what I saw and I let the style develop itself.  Now it is what I do almost exclusively.

GlamModelz Magazine: What inspires you as a photographer? Mike: I find inspiration at every turn. I look through fashion magazines and wander the cobblestone streets or industrial areas of town.  Displays in the mall and people watching in the park yield ideas I have incorporated into my photographs.  But most of all, I am inspired by interesting faces.  It seems that every face I see tells a story and when it comes to glamour/beauty, the face always inspires the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: What challenges do you face in this industry? Mike: You mean other than time?  My biggest challenge is pleasing myself…I am my own worst critic.  Next would be stepping out of the box and trying new concepts to keep things fresh. I feel fortunate that photography is a serious passion but not my solitary means of income.  I comment frequently that if I had to please art directors and meet deadlines or make a big profit, that I would not enjoy it as much and the incentive for creativity would be diminished in favor of a cookie cutter approach.

GlamModelz Magazine: What equipment is essential for you as a glamour photographer, to capture your “best shot”? Mike: I’m considered a heretic…I use Sony/Minolta.  My most essential pieces of equipment are my fast Zeiss lenses.  I use the 85mm lens so much that I have one camera devoted to it.  I shoot primarily on location and the ability to use all the available light at a lower ISO is good so I can travel light.  I’d like to think that I also equip myself well with a vision of the shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: Paid vs. TF* shoots – What are your views and preferences? Mike: I’m as selective for paid, as I am TF.  I might be a rebel but I like TF. It takes the pressure off and allows for more relaxed interaction among team members.  Paid work is, well, work.  TF is fun with the right people.

GlamModelz Magazine: How would you best describe your personal style? Mike: Technically unsound.  Drawn to natural light.  Random precision.  I am very laid back and patient in a shoot and like to let the model flow through her poses. On occasion I have specific poses in mind but as a general rule I let the model stay in her groove, only stopping her to get more shots of a special look or pose that she has hit.  I spend as much time getting to know the model as I do photographing her…it may lead to a great candid shot.  With me, everyone in the team is encouraged to contribute; I want the end product to benefit everyone involved.  Generally though, I will take the lead to ensure ‘the look’ that is desired.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals for your photography? Mike: Easy…to take photographs that people like to look at.

GlamModelz Magazine: What qualities should Models/MUA’s/Stylists, etc. have to work with you? Mike: A sense of humor.  Proficiency in baking is a real plus (no nuts in the chocolate chip cookies, please).

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us about your biggest accomplishment to date or what makes you most proud. Mike: Somehow getting my beautiful wife, Beth to put up with me for 23 years!  Well, either that or beating my 12-year-old son in Madden 11…now that was big!

GlamModelz Magazine: What advice do you have for new/amateur photographers who want to shoot glamour? Mike: Create a vision.  Scout locations.  Keep a log of times as well as seasons that the lighting is best.  Look for the light…everywhere you look there is a sweet spot of light. Read up on posing and lighting methods.  And most importantly, recognize and learn from mistakes.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any advice for models? Mike: Punctuality and reliability may make you more money than you think.  A favorable reputation of being there on time ready to shoot is one of the best things you can do for consistent work.  Learn more than one facial expression and practice posing in front of a mirror…a lot and don’t wear colored contact lenses unless requested.  Learn to do your own hair and makeup well.  There won’t always be a MUA available and as a model, you can become a triple threat if you can do hair and makeup for yourself.

GlamModelz Magazine: In addition to photography, do you have other interests? Mike: Other than family, I enjoy mountain biking and writing.  I’m also a gadget freak.

GM: How did you first enter into the modeling industry?
Breezy: It was a sun-shiny, beautiful day in July of 2009 when I got my senior pictures done by Jeff DeHaven of DeHaven Digital Photography. It didn’t take Jeff long to realize that I was a major ham and- walla! Before you know it he gave me a call and we started shooting right away. The rest is history! 

GM: What are your goals and ambitions in the modeling industry?
Breezy: I hope to make it big one day—Cliché?—yes. I would love to model for Victoria’s Secret, any surf company (i.e. Roxy, Billabong, O’Neill), and Sport’s Illustrated—big dreams for a small town girl. 

GM: Who inspires you and why?
Breezy: My three little sisters. They always know how to keep me level, make me laugh, and remind me that natural beauty is just as beautiful as society’s ideal of what is beautiful. 

GM: What styles of modeling are you most interested in?
Breezy: I am into all genres of modeling. I like to have a taste of all the different shoots I can get a hold of. However, in the ideal situation I would like to end up in bikini/swim wear. 

GM: Do you have any tips or suggestions for new models? Advice regarding makeup, where to purchase clothing, how to get the best deals, etc?
Breezy: Have fun! Laugh a little. It will make any shoot more fun. I’ve always done my own hair and makeup; you need to know what the best look is for you and feel comfortable in your own skin. Something I always try to do whenever I have a shoot is to make it my own. The beauty and fashion industry is ever changing and if your look stands out it could start a revolution. 

GM: Tell us about your future goals and ambitions, not necessarily related to modeling-but in general.
Breezy: I am attending the University of Hawaii this fall and cannot wait to be in the surf and sand. Besides modeling, another passion of mine is animals. I would love to do something involving animal rescue/animal rights. I have a list of goals I want to achieve within my lifetime and I am already halfway done (within the last year I have gone skydiving, graduated high school, achieved my dream of living in Hawaii, bull riding, etc.) I am thrilled for wherever my life takes me next. 

GM: What do you think of the modeling industry in general, where it is going and what your role will be?
Breezy: You know what? Honestly, I think the modeling industry is one of the toughest industries to be in. Critique is intense and you have to have some thick skin and a positive attitude to make it. I hope that when I make it, girls will see that an average, small-town girl, with no artificial advantages, could make an influence. 

GM: What sort of experiences have you had with various photographers, who do you like to work with?
Breezy: I have had several different experiences with various photographers and I have definitely acquired a liking for a certain type of photographer. I like a photographer who makes me feel comfortable, who has a sense of humor, and can have fun doing a shoot. It can really make the difference between a mediocre shoot and a life changing shoot.  My favorite photographer I have ever worked with was my original photographer, Jeff DeHaven. He was not only all those things but also a great friend. I know he will make it big one day, I hope he won’t forget me

GlamModelz Magazine: Welcome to GlamModelz Magazine Melanie!  

GlamModelz Magazine: First off welcome to GlamModelz Magazine. Please tell us how you got started in modeling? Melanie: Well it actually started off as a family thing, my sisters were Miss Teen Kentucky, and Miss Teen Ohio but I never was interested in doing pageants. I don’t believe people should compete as to who looks better in a swimsuit or evening wear etc. So I decided to take a different approach to modeling. At first I was just finding random photographers to do studio work but then I met Steve Maisch who has been the best thing that’s ever happened to my modeling career, and it went uphill from there.

GlamModelz Magazine: Melanie, you have a very exotic look that has the viewer instantly captivated. Do you mind telling us your ethnicity? Melanie: Both my parents are Puerto Rican. They especially love when I do shoots to bring out our cultural background. I love how it keeps it interesting because in some of the shots that are in my portfolio I could look anywhere from African American to Asian.

GlamModelz Magazine: What is your favorite photoshoot you have been involved with to date? Melanie: Wow that’s an extremely hard question I have many favorite but overall it was a Native American shoot that was done with my best friend Steve Maisch. The pictures turned out phenomenal and held great emotion to one photo specifically, but not just the shoot itself was fantastic, it was also the difficulty to find a place to shoot, once we had found a place to shoot at we were getting ready to take some more shots and an old creepy farmer came out of nowhere and was starring at us. It was hilarious but freaky at the same time. That day it was heavily raining, cold and foggy yet we still managed to have a great time!

GlamModelz Magazine: Tell us the funniest story that has personally happened to you on a runway or photoshoot: Melanie: Well there was this one concept we did call “drowning in your sorrows” where I was shrunken into a glass pitcher as water was pouring onto me. The idea and the shot turned out great but to get that shot I had to sit on a cold concrete floor as my photographers daughter dumped gallons upon gallons of water onto my head. My expression apparently was great for the shot we wanted haha it was freezing but it was enormous fun.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have a style of modeling you really enjoy shooting over others? Melanie: I love doing conceptual pieces! To get into character and portray a story through a photo is remarkable. I’ve went from being a 1950’s housewife to being part of a Vampire Wedding Party. Steve takes a story and brings it over the top I’m just lucky that I get to experience it.

GlamModelz Magazine: Your complication always looks so flawless. Will you share the beauty secrets you use to keep it that way? Melanie: Thank you so much! I actually don’t do too much, I use Clearasil daily face cleanser and I also have a stainless steel blackhead removing tool. But that’s about it. Caution: If you use the tool too often you do end up damaging your skin and bruising if you press to hard. I learned that the hard way! But it goes away after a few days.

GlamModelz Magazine: The Modeling TV reality shows have created quit an interesting in modeling these days. Have you ever thought of trying out for a reality TV show or approached about it? Melanie: As a matter of fact for the longest time I was 5’6 and you have to be 5’7 to be on Americas Next Top Model One year I grew an inch and couldn’t have been happier because they were having casting calls within distance to where I live. But it was a week before my 18^th birthday so I wasn’t able to go to the casting since they only accept 18 years and up. But now I look at it as more of an educational show it shows me how to pose differently and gives me ideas for more of my modeling.

GlamModelz Magazine: What other hobbies or interests do you have that our readers might enjoy hearing about? Melanie: I love photography and have for many years but lately I’ve been trying to explore my talents. I started sewing my own pieces of clothing and home décor. I also play baseball and love four wheeling!

GlamModelz Magazine: Congratulations Melanie, your on-line portfolio is quite stunning and exhibits cutting edge styling, every single photograph is a work of art.  Do you plan the shots that you are adding to your portfolio, rely mostly on the photographers you work with, or just shoot whatever you’re pitched at the time? Melanie: It’s a combination of the three, if I have an idea for a shoot I pitch it to my photographer and see if it gets his approval if so we figure out hair, wardrobe, and location and go from there. I also get a lot of the ideas pitched to me and if I feel I could be good for the shoot I usually don’t turn it down.

GlamModelz Magazine: Well one look at you and its obvious you were born for Glamour modeling for men’s magazines, being beautiful and curvaceous as you are. Is this something you would like to pursue in your modeling career? Melanie: Not so much, I love modeling. The people I get to work with are incredible and the photos always turn out fabulous but my real dream is to be a professional photographer. Put me on either side of the camera and I’m happy!

I use a Beauty Dish exclusively as my light modifier of choice, now indoors and out. The Beauty Dish magically enhances skin and makeup pigments, making it the perfect choice as a main or primary fill. The principles of shooting outdoors are identical to that of a studio. The environmental challenges can be infinite and extreme., but the pain of it all is so rewarding once you have pulled off that perfect shot. Nothing from the studio can compare to that killer outdoor shot.

Why Use a Beauty Dish?

About two years ago a photographer from New York wrote me on ModelMayhem to ask me how I get such wonderful skin effects in Photoshop. I wrote her back and explained, since I specialize in Beauty Photography I am very selective of the models and makeup artists I use when working on my own portfolio. Plus I use a Beauty Dish for everything I shoot, Beauty, Fashion, Glamour, Everything! She promptly wrote me back, calling me a lair. Two years later, I am still laughing hysterically over that. You just can’t help some people….

I can’t really explain the technical reasons why, but the Beauty Dish has several unique lighting characteristics. There is just something in the way it illuminates makeup pigments and adds a radiant glow to skin, even average to poor skin. I’ve heard it said “it’s the quality of my beauty models and professional makeup artist”. Yes, this really helps, but I have also seen these magical effects on regular people too.

Miracles do not come easily; the Beauty Dish does have a learning curve. I studied with a master and it required a year to find the Sweet Spot. Then one day it hit me and now the light is more of an addiction. With practices and a little experimentation you should be able to master it in no time. I hope to relate enough hints to start you well on your way to success. I have two Beauty Dishes, a 22″ white dish from Alien Bees and a 16″ Strobist silver reflective dish from ePhoto. You can read more about studio usage in my original article Shooting With the Beauty Dish. In this article we are going to be talking about the new ePhoto Strobist Beauty Dish and it’s usage as a fill light in outdoor situations.

The Beauty Dish itself

The e-Photo 16″ Strobist Beauty Dish I am using in this tutorial has a matte silver finish and comes with a diffuser sock/cover. The beautifully designed flash hot shoe bracket and standard 3/8″ light-stand mount attaches easily to your equipment. A set of optional grids are available with a package deal or sold separately. The manufactures website markets this specifically for a Canon 550-XL or a Nikon SB-800. Besides my SB-600/800′s I have used this dish with SunPacks and Vivatar portable flashes, with and without the added height of TTL cables, optical and radio slave triggers, etc. e-Photo also offer’s the 16″ model (and a 22″ white Beauty Dish) with or without the Strobist bracket, priced accordingly of course.

The 16″ Beauty Dish has quickly become a valued piece of equipment in my favored arsenal. I have removed the Strobist bracket and attached the Beauty Dish to my Alien Bees 1600. It fits perfectly. The light from the silver dish is amplified greatly in comparison to that of my 22″ white Beauty Dish. Packing any Beauty Dish for transport into the field is difficult. It’s so sweet to only pack a few small Speedlites and not a couple of Bees and the Vagabond. It really makes a day trip into the field much easier.

I have noticed a slight color shift towards magenta (+ 0.7), which is easily corrected in Camera RAW. This may be common to all silver Beauty Dishes. This is the first silver dish I have used. It took me two or three shoots to accustom myself to the amplified lighting characteristics (jumping from the 22″ white dish). I really love using this with my lesser powered equipment, both in the field and studio.

For the purpose of this article I powered the Beauty Dish with a Nikon SB-800. I connected the SB-800 directly to my camera via a 33′ iTTL cable available from this e-Bay e-Store. (pictured above, bottom). The cable took forever to come from China, but it is a necessity in my growing location bag. Adorama has their own version available for Canon and Nikon, usually delivered to your doorstep within days…

Let’s Get to Our First Look:

Whenever shooting outdoors, I like to think of the sun as my Main, and the Beauty Dish (softbox, reflector, whatever) as my fill. Quite often I like to use the sun as my rim or hair light (key light). Since we are using the sun as our main source, positioning becomes critical. Obviously you can not move the sun, so you will need to position yourself and your model with respect to the sun, when composing the photograph. Just as you would set up your studio lighting for the first time. Position the main, evaluate, then position your fill and finally key lights.

Shooting mid day (high sun) used to be something I avoided like the plague. Now I simply head for a shaded setting and setup my fill lighting.

My first shot is a simple one light shot. I used my softbox in this case because the spread is greater then would have been with the beauty dish.  I placed the softbox about 2′ to my left.  Another goal and to further complicate this shot, I wanted the dress to flow. I achieved this with a slower shutter speed and a higher aperture. According to my cameras META Data I was shooting at 45th of a second at f-16, using a 18-70mm Nikkor zoom lens.

Photo B. In the second attempt I moved four feet to my right and had Lula May lean forward a few inches into her own shadow. Now we’re in flattering light, but I still require fill light to soften the harsh shadows. I wanted my Beauty Dish above her aimed downwards, but I only have a light weight 6′ light-stand and she wanted to pose on top of the fence. To obtain the height I needed I setup the Beauty Dish on top of my car, parked about 18′ away. I used a backdrop light-stand to setup my softbox close to the ground, aiming upward. I configured my softbox 1/2 stop under.

Photo C. As with any typical Northern California day the fog rolled in mid afternoon. Most photographers love shooting in moderate to heavy cloudy weather.  The ambient light is even and fill is not always required. I really love shooting in this condition, but I always use a fill to add that “pop” my style requires.  If you look closely at my models right arm (far side) you will notice the light from the beauty dish casts a harsher shadow.

NOTE: I used the same lighting diagram in both photos (B. & C.) Please note I was using the Beauty Dish only in Photo C. The distance of approximately ten feet between the model and Speedlite is the same.

Shooting at the beach:

Shooting at the beach is always fun, but can also have its own special difficulties and challenges. I use a little trick I learned through the years at the beach. I deliberately underexpose by one stop, and then compensate by overexposing one stop with my fill flash. By doing this, I am able to over-saturate the water and sky, which are usually washed out. The flash will bring my main subject into the light of center stage.

I had Rick, the Makeup Artist hold my Beauty Dish about eighteen feet from my model, 5′ to my right. I needed to make sure the wind did not blow over the light-stand or sink in the wet sand. We both move forward and back to avoid the waves. Connecting the camera to the SB-800 with an iTTL cable really paid off in this challenging situation. According to my META DATA I was about 12′ to 18′ from my model, shooting in Auto mode. ISO 100, f-8 at 250th of a second with a Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 50mm lens.

Conditions change fast in Northern California. The fog, the tide and the wind can change your situation within seconds, you really need to pay attention. Shooting close to the shoreline is always a major concern because I did not wish to lose any equipment to the Pacific Ocean.

The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful (and Why).

The three examples above all exhibit challenges of there own. Let’s take a closer look at the complexities of each image and how I manipulated them to my own advantage.

Photo A. In our cover shot I wanted to minimize the reflection on the sunglasses and the shadows on the far side. I needed to prove to myself that I could get that studio quality lighting out of this thing. And I did…. I had to relearn or tweak my lighting style when shooting outdoors with Speedlights. In the studio I’m after the feathered “edge” light from the Beauty Dish and I never use grids. I have started using grids outdoors and quite often the center of the lights beam.

I needed to prove to myself that I could get that studio quality lighting out of this thing. And I did….

I used steep angles in my lighting to emulate the illusion of the sun. Furthermore by using steep angles I am assured the shadow will cast below the model and off camera. You should also note the distance between my model and the Beauty Dish and the distance from the model to the cliff. I eliminated the harsh shadows immediately behind her by posing her 2’ away from the cliff. By placing my main 18′ away gave me a softer, flattering lighting effect on the model. It’s that flattering, radiant glow that comes so naturally in the studio. Experiment with placement on your own, you will notice flattering light (the Sweet Spot) from about ten to twenty feet from your subject. Never overexpose with a Beauty Dish, you’ll loose that special quality. You are better off underexposing by one third to a half stop then overexposure any amount.

Let’s talk a minute about why fill flash is so important. Regardless of the Beauty Dish, bare bulb, or even a simple reflector. Cameras are made for the masses. I. E. right handed people. To take a vertical picture it is only natural to rotate the camera counter clockwise, to the left. Fig A. It is more comfortable and provides better stability when taking the picture. Notice how my popup flash’s light travels across Lula May’s body, casting an accentuated shadow on the shower wall. Many of us call this a Polaroid, Snapshot, whatever, it looks very amateurish and IMHO looks horrible!!

In this case it was easy, quick, and it really had no effect on the final outcome,since it was going to be cut out and manipulated heavily in photoshop. We have all seen this effect and thought very little of the photographer showing it.

While we we’re walking back to the studio, we came across this door. I love the texture and intricate pattern on the door’s iron work. We decided to try a quick beauty shot. Fig B. It was not practical to setup a fill, it was the popup, on camera flash or nothing… Notice I rotated my camera to the right, clockwise. Yes it was very uncomfortable and difficult to hold and control the camera, but the light path was flattering.

I have always used at least one fill light when forced outside of the studio. Now with my trusty Speedlite and 16″ Beauty Dish I really enjoy using the world as my studio!!

Photo C. Shooting in tall grass is something I love shooting especially in the spring.

Lighting this shot was pretty simple and straightforward. I put the Beauty Dish on my short stand and down in the grass. I knelt above the Beauty Dish, with Lula May down in the grass. The tall grass did cause a slight color shift which was easily corrected in Camera RAW.

In Conclusion:

When I’m using a Beauty Dish outside, I am not as concerned with the feathered light as I am in the studio, but I generally underexpose by a third of a stop. In the twilight hours or very thick fog, I do feather the light beam, but not when shooting during the dreaded “no shoot” hours – 10:am till 3:30pm. I am sure you all heard the golden rule about shooting outdoors; Sunrise to 10:am and then again from 4:pm until sunset?

Although some women like to visit a color specialist to find out which shades work particularly well with their skin tone, there are some very simple guidelines that you can follow which do not involve having to pay for this service, and basically these revolve around the four seasons of the year. Simply examine your complexion in the mirror and decide which of the seasons most accurately describes yours.

Winter Complexions

Women who have winter complexions have hair which is at either end of the color spectrum. While some have very dark brown or black hair, others are platinum blonde. Their complexions are considered to be a cool tone with a tinge of pink or blue, and their skin might be pale to porcelain white, a yellowish-olive color or dark. Generally there is a stark contrast between the color of their hair, eyes and skin.

Winter people should look for silk scarves and shawls which feature strong, vibrant colors such as red, hot pink, black and navy blue, while beige, orange and gold should all be avoided.

Summer Complexions

Summer people have pale, pink skin and they are often natural blondes or brunettes with light-colored eyes. Again, they have the same pink or blue undertones to their skin but, unlike those with winter complexions, there is usually very little contrast between the color of their hair and eyes and the shade of their skin.

The colors which work best for people with summer complexions are the pastels. Baby blue, dusky pink, pale lemon, mauve and lavender are all excellent choices, but bold colors should be avoided as these have the tendency to make the wearer look washed out.

Fall Complexions

Of course, fall is always associated with rich, warm colors and those with a fall complexion have golden undertones to their skin, which might be pale peach, golden beige or golden brown in color. Usually they have red or brunette-colored hair and rich, earthy colors tend to suit them best.

Orange, gold, dark brown, beige, olive or even a rich, warm grey all work well for fall people, but pastels, blues, black and white are not at all flattering.

Spring Complexions

Along with fall complexions, spring complexions are also warm. The skin, which is pale ivory in color, has creamy white or peach undertones and people with this type of complexion normally have golden blonde, strawberry blonde or auburn hair and light blue or green eyes.

Spring people benefit from being able to wear a great range of different shades from ivory, peach, coral and golden yellow or golden brown, to aqua, bright green, clear blue and true red.

e-Photo’s Beauty Dish:

Recently I purchased a 16″ Beauty Dish, from my friends at e-Photo. I love the engineered shape and design. It’ has a highly reflective silver interior that returns the maximum light from the Speedlights. I LOVE the mounting bracket that attaches to a standard light stand. For $60.00 this offers so many advantages over the DIY Beauty Dish and is something I would highly recommend. It comes with a sock or defuser, a speedring adapter and grids are available as options.

I must admit I am having a lot of fun with this Beauty Dish outdoors. But after using the Alien Bees, Beauty Dish with the flat white interior for so many years, I will need some time to acclimate myself to its power range. The highly reflective silver interior surface throws a lot of light on your subject!!

The center reflector on this Dish is fully adjustable and slides back and forth on it’s metal hangers. There are two indents to serve as stop guides, which I have not yet had the time to experiment with. I love using this Beauty Dish connected an SB-800 via an i-TTL cable. So far I’m very pleased when I shoot .07 of a stop under. I’ve had great luck using Nikon CLS in remote mode.

The e-Photo Beauty Dish w/Alien Bees 1600:

My buddy had taken the studio’s Beauty Dish out for a day shoot, but I had my new e-Photo dish in the car and decided to see what I could manage. The e-Photo 16″ silver Beauty Dish connected up to my Alien Bees 1600′s like it was designed for it. First, I really must say; WOW, I had no idea how much light my white Alien Bees Beauty Dish was eating… From the beginning I had to reduce the power down to about 1/3 on my AB 1600 (shooting at ISO 100 with the dish about 10′ from my model).

I managed to get the feathered lighting effect I love so much and it was exactly where I expected it. So aiming was easy and experienced no learning curve issues jumping from the AB 22″ white dish to the 16″ silver dish.

You realize all studio lighting has its own color shift? The color shift is usually much more prominent at lower output settings than it is at higher settings. I have not yet had the opportunity to shoot a color card and write a profile, but I will and update this review sometime soon.

Overall I was very happily surprised with the performance and effect from the e-Photo Beauty Dish when used in conjunction with my Alien Bees. I have no doubt this Beauty Dish would be very effective with lesser powered systems. From ten feet away in the studio I can still light a full body shot, so I haven’t noticed any negative effects from the 16 inch size. This Beauty Dish is easily maneuverable in the field because of it’s smaller size. You will need to sandbag your lightstands, this dish will catch wind just like it’s big brother…

The e-Photo Beauty Dish w/Nikon SB-800 Speedlight:

The setup I purchased from e-Photo is marketed for the Canon 550 and Nikon SB-800 series speedlights, but it appears to me that it will attach to virtually any hot-shoe mounted portable flash. The adjustment in the bracket (pictured above) easily accommodates from the very small through very large speedlights and portable flash systems.

Kristina was shot Rembrandt style (a single light, centered, 8″ above eye level), with my SB-800 connected directly to the camera through an i-TTL cable. OMG! I LOVE THIS SETUP!!! I have no idea why I decided to connect the i-TTL cable, but thank God, I did. I immediately went onto e-Bay and bought a 33′ i-TTL cable to extend the distance of the speedlight from the camera.

With the Speedlights I’m still seeing the magenta cast in the white balance and need to make a -3 correction in Camera Raw to compensate. No big deal! I quickly became accustom using this dish as a fill source and it’s another tool in my arsenal that I can not live without!

They offer a studio version of this Beauty Dish without the speedlight bracket and costs a few bucks less too. e-Photo has a speedring option available, you should consult them regarding studio strobe attachment.

In conclusion I guess I should list the Cons. I don’t see any with this particular Beauty Dish. IMHO all Beauty Dishes share a few disadvantages. They are bulky and difficult to pack for transportation. You do not ever want to dent a Beauty Dish. Loss of it’s shape will undoubtedly effect the light on your subject. The #1 disadvantage to owning a Beauty Dish is: Models will quickly become addicted to the flattering light, insisting that you shoot at all hours of the day

This is a Must Have Light-Mod, for any serious Strobist!!

GlamModelz Magazine: Welcome to GlamModelz Magazine Amanda Michelle!

GlamModelz Magazine: When working with a photographer do you bring your own concepts and idea’s as well as working with theirs? Amanda Michelle: For the most part if a photographer wants to shoot me then I will ask them if they have any specific concept ideas and if not then I will try to work with them on some. I think if the photographer already has a vision for you, then the model should respect that and try to work with them on that, but I do feel it is important for both the model and the photographer to work together on concept ideas. This is important because it helps build a relationship between one another, increasing the comfort ability and the model and the photographer both are on the same plan of thinking when it comes to the vision for the photo.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts and issues with Implied and Nude posing? Amanda Michelle: I personally do not do them, but I feel it is okay if you are one, comfortable enough to do it ( and I mean you have to be completely comfortable) and two if it is professionally done in an either a artistic or classy way.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts on the whole escort issue? Amanda Michelle: I feel that it is important for the model to have someone with them that they trust when going to someone for the first time. But I feel that the model does need to do their research first and find references too. It is a cruel world, and sometimes very much needed for a backup plan. But I do not think it is a good idea to bring more than two people with you and unannounced. I feel to be fare to the photographer you need to let them know in advance.

GlamModelz Magazine: Your thoughts on TFP or TFCD sessions in general? Amanda Michelle: I love them, especially for models and photographers looking to build their port. The only thing is that sometimes both models and photographers tend to take these sessions less seriously because they look at it as a “free” session treat it as such. For one you should ALWAYS give it 110%, and these sessions are just important as paid ones.

GlamModelz Magazine: Any suggestions to models about wardrobe? What to have and where to find deals? Amanda Michelle: You have to think ahead of time too. No last minute “put-togethers” (although sometimes you might get lucky), these usually do not work. Getting your clothes together ahead of time will save you a lot of headache in the long run. You also want to follow the concept as best you can, if you need ideas, simply Google them. You also do not want to wear any old or worn-out clothing to a shoot unless that is the concept you are following. There are places where you can buy clothes for cheap that are either new or in good condition, you don’t need to spend a fortune on a simple pair of jeans.

GlamModelz Magazine: What excited you the most when you first started modeling? Amanda Michelle: I am in love with the art of not just modeling but photography. I love how you can turn a simple photo into something more than just a photo.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions are a big part of a photo session, how and where did you learn this? Amanda Michelle: Facial expressions can make a photo, body language is important too but a dead face can turn a photo into disaster!! The best way to learn is to practice in the mirror, the best way to get to know yourself and what works and doesn’t work for you.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you feel that flexibility and diversity are important to a model portfolio? Amanda Michelle: Flexibility and diversity are definitely important to a model’s portfolio because it shows you are able to take photos of all sorts showing a broader range of talent, which agencies look for.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle imperfections.. and how important do you feel professional make up is to a model? Amanda Michelle: To handle my imperfections I just try to enhance my more glamorous features. But sometimes my imperfections do show through but that’s okay, no one is perfect and this is what makes us human, and gives us our individual characteristics. It is your perfections, imperfections and everything in between that makes up every part of you….embrace them all!!!!

GlamModelz Magazine: Welcome to GlamModelz Magazine Kelsea Hume!

GlamModelz Magazine: How did you get your start in the business? Kelsea Hume: On accident. I wasn’t interested in modeling at first. I was more of an actress, but my agency sent out my headshot to a photographer looking to do a national campaign, and I ended up getting the job.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your goals personally and with your modeling career? Kelsea Hume: To make it to LA. I want to be able to say I made it. So I’m hoping that I will get there. It’s slowly happening, which I am soooo excited about.

GlamModelz Magazine: Posing 101 any suggestions to newer models coming into the business? Kelsea Hume: LEARN YOUR ANGLES! You need to know your features. You have to be able put your best foot forward when you go to a go see or audition. People don’t care if you are new. They are going to treat you the same as any other model. So you have to really kick yourself into gear.

GlamModelz Magazine: What have been your greatest successes to date? Kelsea Hume: I’m not sure I can pinpoint one. I think it’s when I started working with Steve Maisch. The pictures we make are astounding. He’s amazing at what he does. Other than that I really think it’s just all the people I’ve gotten to meet.

GlamModelz Magazine: When you are working with a photographer do you bring your own concepts and idea’s as well as working with theirs? Kelsea Hume: Totally! It’s great to collaborate, but you also need to be compromising especially if you’re getting paid. You have to remember that you’re the canvas. When it comes to national ads you have to do what they need. However, if its trade for print, then it’s very easy to bring your own ideas.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts and issues with Implied and Nude posing? Kelsea Hume: It’s all about what you want to do with your career. I’ve done implied work, and I love what I did. As far as nudes go, I haven’t found any interest in them. It’d have to be a very artful, but I honestly doubt I’d be interested. I think it depends on where I’m at in my career.
GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of Family, Friends and loved ones with your modeling? Kelsea Hume: YES! They have been there through it all. My family loves what I do. My Dad when I first started was very into my career and still very much is. He loves going with me to auditions.

GlamModelz Magazine: What are your thoughts on bringing an escort to a photoshoot? Kelsea Hume: It’s all about what is going on. I think it’s always great to bring someone with you especially with trade for print. You don’t really know who the photographer is, and you don’t want to be in a situation you can’t get out of. With paid jobs, if it’s through your agency, and you’re over 20, I don’t think you should bring someone. Your agency wouldn’t set you up with a job or photographer they didn’t know anything about.

GlamModelz Magazine: What would you like to see change in the industry from a model standpoint? Kelsea Hume: Shorter models with some weight. Mind you I don’t weigh much, but I’m only 5’1”. Before Twiggy came around models weren’t 5’9” with 1% body fat. I think models like that work great for the industry, but I would like to see variety. More girls like me deserve a chance to shine. We all have our place, but I wish that models like me could have more of one.

GlamModelz Magazine: What gets you motivated everyday to stay in shape and look your best at all times? Kelsea Hume: I want to get up in the morning and say “Yeah, that’s me!!” and when Steve Maisch tells me he can hear me getting fatter. Hahaha Just kidding, but honestly, I just want to be proud of my body. I’m not where I want to be, but I’m very close. I’m proud to say I love my body.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle the inappropriate offers and sometimes rude individuals when they contact you for a session together? Kelsea Hume: I simply say no thank you. Don’t ever give out your number on websites. Start with email. If someone consistently is rude then I handle it appropriately, but most the time if you say I’m sorry I’m not interested then they leave you alone.

GlamModelz Magazine: Your thoughts on TFP or TFCD sessions in general? Kelsea Hume: Love it!!! It’s great to expand your portfolio, especially for free. If you’re working with a photographer who is good then it can only make your portfolio more rockin!!!

GlamModelz Magazine: Any suggestions to models about wardrobe? What to have and where to find deals? Kelsea Hume: For auditions, always wear a simple look. Hair should always be down, and clothes should never be flashy. Two things a model always has….little black dress (form fitting) and black or tan pumps. Other than that I always hit up the clearance rack. That’s where pretty much all my clothes are from.

GlamModelz Magazine: What excited you the most when you first started modeling? Kelsea Hume: I wasn’t really excited at first. I did it because it was money, but after my first photoshoot I realized it was a ton of fun. So I just started perfecting my art. Then when I started getting people asking to shoot me that’s when I got excited.

GlamModelz Magazine: Facial expressions are a big part of a photo session, how and where did you learn this?? Kelsea Hume: I started out acting so taking acting classes really helped me learn to bring out my best in my emotions, and how to tap into them. Every model should have to take acting classes. They seriously help. Modeling to me is a form of acting. I also learned that a lot of it is in the eyes. I cover up my mouth and practice emotions with my eyes. It seems super silly, but it totally works!!!!!

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you feel that flexibility and diversity are important to a model portfolio? Kelsea Hume: YES! It’s the only way you’ll get noticed and make money. Being able to do different things is a really important part in a modeling career. If you become really known that’s when you can pick and choose what you’re really good at, but starting off its important to do as much as you can.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle rejection; from photographers, agencies and your piers? Kelsea Hume: I just roll it off. You’re going to get a million no’s before you get one yes.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle imperfections, and how important do you feel professional make up is to a model? Everyone has them. It is what makes us human, and everyone needs to wear makeup for photoshoots. Pro or not. I don’t care if your skin is perfect. You still need it.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you had one thing to tell a model just entering the industry what would that be? Kelsea Hume: Get tough skin. Don’t take anything personally. People are piranhas in this industry, but it’s also their job to find the best for what they need.

During the start of my career in this industry, I met another model/actress with the most effervescent personality you could imagine who is also blessed with timeless beauty, intelligence, confidence, poise and ambition.  GlamModelz Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing Linda Ngo, (pronounced “NO”) the founder and CEO of Ngo Limit Productions and Agency to allow our readers a chance to get a glimpse of the great vision and compassion of Ngo Limit Productions.

Jett Ray of GlamModelz Magazine: Thank you Linda for taking time out of your schedule to talk with us and share your passion!  Let’s start at the beginning…How did you get your start in your field of interest ? Linda Ngo of Ngo Limit Productions: Hmmm..Well, I was first approached by Steve Harvey’s project manager and he asked if I had ever had any training.  Of course, I said no, so he advised I take an acting class so that he could take me to LA for a showcase.  So, from the time I enrolled into my first commercial acting class, about 8 years ago, I’ve been working and learning this industry ever since because my class was taught by an agent named Ivett Stone. (R.I.P.)  That’s what you call “God’s work and Grace!”

GlamModelz Magazine: What or who inspires you?  Why? Linda Ngo: Anyone or situation that shows humility, integrity, morals and shows “the gift of giving,” inspires me and means more to me then any title, position or amount of a paycheck.  I believe life should be about building relationships that lasts long term verses short term gain.

GlamModelz Magazine: What Does Ngo Limit Productions Do?  What services do you offer the Modeling Industry? Linda Ngo: Ngo Limit Productions uses the entertainment industry to mentor to our youth as well as anyone interested in the world of entertainment.  We also develop, train and manage talents as we enhance their image, mindset and their experiences. Ngo Limit Productions also assists several event productions, designers, amongst other productions that are related to the industry.   

We also have our own Internet Radio show titled, “The Art of Exposure,” where we say what others are thinking, expose all talents, business and organizations that need to be exposed for good or bad AND with the cosigner of God! Lol!

GlamModelz Magazine: Any suggestions for those new to the modeling industry? Linda Ngo: When you begin to look at the world of entertainment, you have to know and decide what you want out of this and who you want to be from this.  You can’t go in this industry not knowing where you want to go, what you’re wanting to do and you definitely can’t allow yourself to be influenced by others or what other people say about you.

GlamModelz Magazine: What is your biggest accomplishment to date? Linda Ngo: Hmmmm…I think I would have to say the biggest accomplishment would have to be the fact that Ngo Limit is becoming a successful and POSITIVE brand!

GlamModelz Magazine: Anything about your background you’d like the public to know? Linda Ngo: My background is pretty complex and not the most “happy go lucky” childhood and upbringing…so for me, I allow my past to enhance who I am and be compassionate to others.  I could honestly say, although my past is not the simplest, I wouldn’t change any of it.

GlamModelz Magazine: What makes Ngo Limit Productions unique? Linda Ngo: Ngo Limit is unique because of our determination to be heard.  I’ve been able to be blessed enough to create my own rules and production when society feels that they have the right to reject us due to their own discrimination, as well as keep a smile and God’s grace first at all times! Lol!

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you like to travel for work?  Where have you traveled to for your career? Linda Ngo: I like to travel for work, however, I also put my children first, so if the schedule conflicts with my boys, then my boys come first without a doubt!  I’ve traveled to New Orleans for a movie, and throughout the US for media related work.

GlamModelz Magazine: Please discuss an unusual/interesting/funny event that has occurred during your career. Linda Ngo: Hmmmmm…interesting event…more like an observation… I was shooting a movie in Shreveport and while I was going through production with the Wardrobe department, I was able to talk to a young lady who was a little jealous and frustrated because she was comparing her wardrobe selection to mine. The problem is that the fellow actress was upset because she had mentioned that all her movie roles that have been offered to her were only roles that required topless or nudity scripts since she did her first topless movie.  So, for me, the interesting side of this is to see how people are marked and how image plays a major role in your future, personal and professional.

GlamModelz Magazine: What have been your greatest successes to date? Anastacia: My greatest success to date would have to be getting to be a calendar girl for Sandsations in 2011.

GlamModelz Magazine: Have you had the support of family, friends and loved ones with your modeling? Anastacia: My family and friends have supported me from the beginning. They think its great that I get to have this exciting life experience.

GlamModelz Magazine: What gets you motivated everyday to stay in shape and look your best at all times? Anastacia: Watching other models is a big incentive for me to stay in good shape. I always want to be in top condition when going to a photo shoot.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you have any suggestions to models about wardrobe? What are the essentials and where do you find deals? Anastacia: A models wardrobe is very important. It should be bright and colorful.  It should fit the style of the shoot. Jewelry is always essential; I’m always looking to find great deals.

GlamModelz Magazine: What excited you the most when you first started modeling? Anastacia: What excited me most about modeling when I first started was that I got to play all different kinds of roles and watch them come to life in the photos.

GlamModelz Magazine: Do you feel that flexibility and diversity are important to a model’s portfolio? Anastacia: I feel that to be a great model you have to be very flexible and diverse in the photos you create; always adding something new and inspiring to your portfolio.

GlamModelz Magazine: How do you handle rejection from photographers, agencies, and your piers?  Anastacia: Rejection is a big part of modeling. But I don’t take it to heart. I use it as a building block to better myself for the future.

GlamModelz Magazine: If you had one thing to tell a model just entering the industry what would that be? Anastacia: If I had one thing to tell a new model just coming into the business, it would be to always be themselves and don’t do anything they don’t feel comfortable with.

This weeks cover GlamModel comes to us from San Francisco, Ca. Alicia, 23 years old, 5’10″ tall, is one of the Bay Areas hardest working fashion and Beauty models today.    Alicia is frequently shooting in LA and has just returned from Milan, Italy, where she shot the  European version  of Vogue, Magazine. GlamModelz, is so grateful that  the gorgeous Alicia, took the time from her busy schedule to shoot for our holiday special.

Alicia has been modeling professionally for the past four years.  She attends San Francisco State, full time and has been known to tear-up the dance floors until the early morning hours. But nothing will stop this busy model from her passion to shoot three or more times a week.
