Everyone by now has heard about social networking. Twitter, Facebook, My Space etc… But what are social networking sites pros and cons?

Social networking is designed to bring people with similar interests together. These sites allow people to communicate with each other and meet people with the same ideas and personalities as themselves. Social networking is also a great business tool if used correctly, and many businesses are now turning to social networking to increase their online brand awareness.

The question is, how do you utilise social networking to increase traffic to your business, and how do you leverage that traffic and turn it into leads or sales?

Traffic to these sites is immense. Over 10% of all internet users world wide visit Facebook. To put that number into comparison Reuters, which is seen as the trusted world wide site for news in the English language, pulls in on average only 0.35% of internet traffic. In simpliest terms, Facebook pulls in 20 times the traffic as Reuters. Facebook alone had more page views than Google last month, which is why you need to start looking at these social networking websites as a serious marketing tool for your business.

One of the main benefits of social networking is that it creates absolutely free traffic. The days of PPC traffic are numbered, who wants to pay for advertising when they can have it for free? I was having a conversation with a marketer from Paris yesterday, who claimed that within 5 years, knowbody would pay for internet advertising. Scary thought, but he has basis for this claim.

Social networking websites offer search engines what they crave most, fresh content. Search engines crawl these websites on an hourly basis, and although many of these websites use the “nofollow” attribute for outgoing links, I have noticed almost instantaneous indexing of my web pages by posting my fresh content on Twitter.

The one mistake many online marketers make is link spam, don’t use you social networking accounts to post hundreds of links. They key is to build trust to your followers by posting original content of value to them. Master this, and you will have an army of loyal followers you will act on your every move.

So, the million dollar question, how do you go about using these sites to drive FREE traffic back to your website? Well that depends on which social network you choose to target, and my suggestion would be Twitter. For more information, check out my author bio below:
